CHALLENGE: Steal from Mirre

Animated avatar autoportrait week.

Take "inspiration" from https://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/95421.htm - Mirre's avatar , and create your own in the similar manner. You don't have to try to copy the style, it can be completely your own thing, but it have to be your own self-portrait, that interchanges betwen "realistic" you, and you as a member of a different humanoid species.

That different you can have a different skin colour and facture, covered in feathers, scales, cybernetic implants or even flames, pointy ears or protruding fangs, and of course different garments and accessories, but your face still have to be recognisable.

You have to use some kind of animation to swich between them.

The minimum is one human you and one nonhuman you, but you are allowed to change into as many difefrent species as you like.


Canvas Size - exactly 64x64.
Colors - Max 24.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Required.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.

I thought I'd give this a go, but now I have some questions about file sizes. After optimising my avatar animation as much as possible it's still bigger than 25k, and I've yet to add the transitions between the portraits.

According to the FAQ this means the anim won't be shown on the front page, if it is too big for the front page, does that mean it can't be used as an avatar either?



I also noticed that Gawrone's entry seems to work fine on the front page, so I downloaded it to see what dark sorcery he used to fit all that lovely, lovely animation into 25k, and to my surprise that file is roughly 40k. Now I'm really confused. Is the FAQ wrong?

Yes, I believe that the maximum file size was actually increased not too long ago, if i don't completely misremember. Looks like the FAQ is out of date in that case.

My file was too big to fit, but since many frames are similar. Compression took down the file size by 70% without any quality changes I found.

I use this optimizer https://ezgif.com/optimize

Use the setting "lossy gif" but turn the slide to minimum which is 5, and quality loss will be next to 0. If your file will still be too big, than move it a bit to the right and try again.

If the quality doesn't satisfy you, you can always put the full quality as main artwork, while keeping this one only for the preview/avatar.

That's great, thank you! So up to at least 40k should be ok then, maybe even a few kb more, that should be enough for what I'm hoping to add :)

(The page for uploading entries still says 25k as well, btw)

ooooh, sorry. "On the front page" doesn't mean it will not work as avatar. It means only it will not show in New Artwork section but this seems also be outdated? The swiss army knife I had before as avatar was 100k and worked fine. You are good IMO.

Thank you for the tips! I'll try those if I run into size issues again :) I won't have time to do more than one creature in addition to my regular old face so hopefully 40kb should be enough.

100k! Oh, I won't get anywhere close to that, I think. Looks like I don't have to worry about any size issues then, awesome :)
