Wow, I notice you guys are REALLY awesome so I'm kind of self conscious at posting this because I'm not the best Pixel Artist buuut, I can improve, right?

So here's the latest thing I'm working on: a picture to pixel thingy.

Urrrg. :( To me, the hoodie looks like total crap. Crap crap CRAP! I'd really like some opinions on this.

Is me pixeling OVER the picture bad? Should I get the colors FROM the picture? Am I completely WRONG in my shading attempts? Should I dither.

Urg.. so confused.

(That's Bruny by the way <3)

whoa..so this is how you make portrait pixels...nicely done Aleiav

PS:I tried looking up the tutorials, and I down-loaded the GIFFY file ( for transparencies) but it won't let me unzip it! aye...for the first time I feel like I'm the forum idiot...I'm a very smart person and I enjoy making pixels, that's why I keep trying to make my pictures transparent, so don't get annoyed with me okay?

The sweatshirt is looking good. Dithering is a matter of taste... you can try and dither if that's what looks good to you.

Try moving onto the face to bump up the challenge.

Thanks :) :P I guess I just looked at it too long.

*moves on to the face* I'll post it when I'm done!

Yes, the face will be difficult.  As for your technique, you may want to keep an original handy in another window for reference (incase you aren't already) so that you can check the details.

Looking great so far!

Everytime I try to do the mouth, it looks like sh*t.

Help anyone?

EDIT:

So my friend gave me some help and here's what I came up with:

Looks very cool but one thing. Under (our) right nostril, on the reference pic it looks like it has more shading, maybe if you fix that it will take away the bug that stays in my head making me think that the nose looks a bit off.

The shading on (our) left eye might have too much contrast from the skin tone. It makes it look as if you are REALLY tired. In my opinion if you tone it down just a BIT it would look spect-o-fantastic

Thanks for the crits! How's this:

I feel like his mouth's a bit off. Do you think so?

I feel like his eyes are too blue.  They're practically black in the picture...

*nods*

I made it less contrasty, darked the skin a bit, and DITHERED! :D

Thoughts?

something needs to be done about those eyes and the hair, they're standing out far too much. Once you get those looking nice it pretty much should be perfected.

Blue gave me advice about saturation and I tweaked the pallate and lowered the amount of colors and here's the results!

Last one most the right being where I am as of now.

And here's an animation of the whole process from start to right now:

Ok I posted this on pixel academy but the forum went down so here it is again:

I think you're making good progress with the eyes and mouth but the colors... too saturated, esp. the brighter shade, and too little contrast.
Anti-aliasing would do this picture tons of good.

Urg, after about a month or so of work I'm FINALLY finished with this. I'm quite pleased with it. I decided to leave the dithering out on the face, just because it hasn't worked well in the past.

Thank you http://stardom-velocity.com - Bisque for the skin pallate!

Aaand here's the process with it.

Thankyou all muchly for your help!
