For Halloween and general gothiness :P I wanted to make ones like my alien emotes where they actually do express emotion, but I'm having some difficulty. Maybe it's a problem with my original template?

what do you guys think?

:D Oh, who would have thought I'd poke my head in here..

I like them, they are like a darker version of Jack Skeleton. Good work.

the problem with skull emotions is erm.. the lack of muscles.... and unchangeing ness that skulls have... they just grin all the time, i would sugest makeing pumpkin emoticons for halloween...

but if you must have skulls it will be hard, and you might need to make more room for the mouth area somehow

I like shiny things, i do indeed.

Well, I manged to come up with a couple expressions but I'm not sure if they're that discernible. My friend says they don't even look like skulls (she says they look like golf balls). o_O

Oh weird! I was thinking of doing this the other day...

The expressions are hard to make out. I <3 skulls.

Perhaps you could do something like you did with vader.

Happy skull - a flower growing through it.
Hurt skull - with a crack.
Sad skull - water pouring through the sockets.
Angry skull - perhaps with a candle inside, reddish and sort of creepy.
Ill skull - with a centipede crawling through it.

etc...

The positioning of the eye sockets seems really high on the skull, and I find that they just lack the generall sharp definition that I expect from bare bones - the shape you have is more consistent with a face that has muscles and skin. Your skull is very egg shaped, but you really only get full cheeks with skin & muscle. I think to get the skull look you need to really define those cheek bones, and the area where the lower jaw attaches.

I think of the four emotes you posted, the third one down looks most skull-like, because of the extension of the line between the jaws... the fourth one has an almost alien-head look too it. I don't really find that any of them are very expressive though - I'd have to see them all together to even begin to guess at which emotions they were supposed to portray, and even then it'd only be a guess.

I rather like Larwick's idea, because facial expressions really are functions of muscle and skin, and distorting the bone structure to create expressions just takes away from the skull look.
