Just finished playing Metal Slug 3 and got inspired to make a sprite for the PJ Game (yes, it's still on despite the lack of activity).

May I present RoboWhale!
He's still choppy and in greyscale for now but the basis of what I wanted to do is there:

14 colours

Lemme know what you think I should change or add. If all goes well, I will try an attempt at animating him.

Nice shape. Maybe you could add some sort of blowhole to better show its a whale? It just may be the shading, the tail looks like a fish tail here not a mammal one. It would look even better if you added flaps to the side fin like airplanes have.

Hm... I think size has alot to do with this one. Just looking at it, it looks like a dolphin. But I bet if you put a boat up to it or something, that showed that it was the size of a whale, it'd automaticly fool you into making it look like it's more whaleish than dolphinish.

Jal: blowhole added, flap added, whale tail fixed

Blice: changed the top fin. I think that was a main factor throwing it off and making it look dolphin-ish

Also made him look a bit more menacing with the eye

Nice! How about a scar on the nose area to indicate a mature warrior type whale rather than a cute baby one. You propably know (being Canadian, all whales are Canadian) they are recognized by unique tails, add a tear somewhere on it. It will add to the battle tested look.
edit: For the skin a subltle Orca style pattern that almost looks like army camouflage may be an idea worth exploring.

Thanks Jal, but this is a robot whale... no need for scars. Updated a tiny bit with some quick drastic changes to the tail fin which is now looking more like a proper whale's tail.

Feel free to edit if you've a better way to portray the tail

Maybe have the tail curve up?

i know this is suppose to be a whale but i agree with jal and think it resembles an orca quite a bit more than a whale.

Maybe it could be half bot half organic, Like a Borg. Still cool but, the new tail looks really off. The first was OK. Shading would have made it look like a mammal tail rather than fishtail (I can see it as being curled under). I didn't mention it since you were thinking of animating it.

a couple of choppy animations

I'm not making it a cyborg, Jal. The tail needs to be fixed. I'm not happy with it but it does need to be on a better side view rather than what I had it as. Take a look at some vids on youtube and you'll see what I'm up against.

Scottfro: an orca IS a whale. Honestly, disregard the name of the sprite and concentrate on the image itself. It's hardly a life drawing exhibit here.

Cool idea! But I think the shading needs more attention, the lightsource is a little ambiguous.

looking at it this morning and it seems that maybe increase the overall contrast of the sprite a bit might make it pop out at ya a bit more?

scottfro: killer whale

PB, what's causing some problems is, i think, the fact that the front and the tail seem to be closer to the viewer then the midde part, like

 ,¤^¤,    <-orca
    ö       <- viewer

on the note of the fin animation.

what if you converted the tail into a 2 peice tail that appeared more robotic and less organic?

sorry for the super sloppy edit i have to leave for class in 5 mins....

I left you edit on pixelation,  tried to do it here but for some reason loging in on forum is a matter of luck - giving me an errors constantly and then login in after dozen attemts. If I'm  lucky enough.=))

Technically I would add come kind of joint on the body end, it just looks rigid on overall construstion. Sort of these ( have no clue how to name it=)

Or maybe even U-joint. Might be very comfortable to animate one of those.=)

Damn you Fool! You keep coming up with alot of great ideas while I'm busy working on it.
Anyways, redesigned it a bit. Was thinking of having the tail come upright like so:

Edit: and a quick animation to show what I'm doing with the nose bit...
