I can't see the image, and nor can anyone else at the moment, but I expect that it's the one in your avatar?

Well firstly... it's a rock. Who wants to make rocks during their free time? Secondly, it's very basically done... it doesn't really have contrast, your shadows and highlights are just increasements and decreasements in the base color's brightness, which doesn't make it very interesting. If you want some good guides for beginning pixel art, bounce to the pj mainpage, look under the 'Links' tab and go to the 'Tutorials' page. One I suggest to start off with is http://www.spriteart.com - www.spriteart.com .
Good luck :)

If you yourself admit that it's ugly, then you probably shouldn't post it in the gallery.  It's a place for completely finished and perfected pieces you can do.   And since you know that you need to improve it, well then, it looks like you're on the right track.

Now just because it's your first one, it doesn't mean that you can make just anything.  You're new, and it's great that you're interested in Pixel Art, but that's no excuse for poorly executed pieces that have no thought put into them.

The link Ceddo posted is very helpful, and also you should read through the other tutorials offered in the special section at the gallery site.  Then show us your progress.

Good luck.

edit: also, there's really no need for the giant font.  It may come off as agressive.
