I hope this doesn't make people angry! Basically, I've been working on a 'Christmas project'. A mini-game I wanted to create over Christmas to have a little fun with. In a nutshell, here's the game concept:

You play as a miner with a beard, sent by his village to investigate the source of strange demonic activity. You soon find out (after much beard-stroking) that the only way to ward away all of the evil is to travel deep underground to retrieve an ancient magical item (the Crystal Heart). There are two problems: the first of which is that to get the Crystal Heart you must impress a sacred and elite magical group. The second is that the cave layers leading down to their world are infested with all manner of nasty monsters!

Here are a few screenshots of the current build:

Now, I hope people don't get mad at me for not placing this in the jobs forum. Because yes, it is a request for art. But no, it's not really a job post. Basically, I have two friends helping with pixel art in the game (one of them is a forum member here). You see, the game is all about getting deeper into the dungeons and collecting better, cooler items. So I thought: why not let people add their own weapons and magical spells?!

If that's something you'd be interested in:

You'll notice on the above screenshot (the second one), the character is wearing a helmet and is holding the Golden Pickaxe. Basically, items are rendered on the players body if they are present in his or her inventory. To create an item, you need to first make a 16x16 icon for it. After that, you have to render it on the players body.

To do that, you need the overlay template:
http://www.perforated-art.com/game/overlay_template.bmp - http://www.perforated-art.com/game/overlay_template.bmp .

That shows the player in his various forms of movement. The next step is to draw the items over those frames and then, finally, remove the player from them. So it's just the item hovering in space. As a rule of thumb, the first 14 frames are walk animations. They need to be done. After that, it depends on what it is you're making! If it's a potion, or magic... The next 4 frames are the ones you want. They show the player holding the items up. If it's a sword/other weapons, the 4 frames after that are the ones that you want.

Here's an example: http://www.perforated-art.com/game/overlay_std_sword.bmp - http://www.perforated-art.com/game/overlay_std_sword.bmp

Now, say you wanted to create a spellbook that performed an action: you can have that action be instant, or have it continue for a certain number of seconds. We already have running boots in-game that go for 30 seconds and increase movement by x2.

If you wanted to make a wand that shot fire, that's perfectly acceptable! Just make sure you provide separate graphics for the fireball projectile, and any effect you want shown when the fireball hits an enemy. Both projectiles and particle effects can be any size you want.

People are welcome to create monsters, but that involves a different process. So if there's any interest (at all), I'll repost! Alternatively, if you'd be happier making terrain, the tiles are 16x16. We are aiming to have 10 different terrain sets, so all of that is welcome too!

I hope people don't take this as a 'make my game for me' post. As I said, we can and will be producing our own item set. This is purely for people who would like to have a few of their own items in-game! Remember, this is a Christmas project (that I've chosen to continue), so it's all in fun.
