Is transparency allowed oh challenge creator?

I didn't write this one up, but I'd say it's a go for transparency. 3 colours is gonna be a bitch of a challenge. Thinkin' I might actually take part in this one.

What exactly does "limited to 3 colors...", "...it can be any shade of red, yellow and black" mean?
Does that mean the palette is limited to 3 entries of which each individual entry can be any shade of those or does it mean that the palette is not limited in its' entries and that participants can use as many shades of red, yellow and black as they please?
(not saying that I'm going to participate, just curious)

I think its just 3 colors, and you may choose those colors yourself (however they must be yellow, red and black, but you may do Dark red, very light yellow and white too.....
Im working on this temple, but there is something wrong.... How do I get it right?? I think I am totally going to redo it

Hi there!
Do these colors qualify as shades of red and yellow?
 (early wip)
Also if someone has tips how to select the colors to make the text more legible, please share them. On the LCD I'm currently sitting at some of them are a bit hard to read.

parts (the menu) ripped from final fantasy tactics advance? it's a nice head, maybe you should design your own menu though.

So far this is waht I have..
The line art still needs detail, which I am working on..but I cannot find the right shades of red/yellow/black to make the image perfect.. Also can anyone please give me any pointers on a good dither/shading/lighting style. 3 colors is a new thing for me..this is very hard.
Thanks for your time guys..
Basically those are flaming boulders flying over the sky above the soldier. as the fire balls get farther away, the flames slowly turn into big smoke clouds! (will detail face later)

I think that definately represents a shade of red. I also think the last color that you thought looked brown was still a shade of red. Hopefully the judging will be semi lenient on the shades of the colors due to the fact that you can only pick the 3. I think this picture matches the greek art style very well. Kudos!
(Kudos from the Greek κύδος kydos) <-- on topic, kinda funny

1. wouldnt transparency be more than 3 colors in the end though?
2. im not to smart on the computer side of graphics...can we hand make our transparency in MSpaint? or does it have to be done in a program that makes the transparency for us?

It was meant to be a FFTA mockup. Though maybe I'll come up with an original menu.

I know it doesnt.. I guess I worded it wrong.
I mean can I hand pixel my transparency using MSpaint? I realize that it does not feature a transparency function. But I feel that if someone else is allowed to use it just because they have access to PSP, am I allowed to do it by hand in MSpaint? (This would technically be using more than 3 colors though)
|

then no, you cannot. you can get someone to do it for you, but it is red, black, yellow, and transparency only

There are free programs out there that allow you to add a transparency to a gif. Pardon the plug, but I typically use 'Giffy.' It can convert .BMP to .GIF, .GIF to .BMP, as well as add a transparency to a .GIF file.
http://www.hultshome.dk/b_b_makers/vej_blink_not_psp_en.htm
there's also GifAnimator on that site too. It's a simple program that makes animations...but if you're just looking to add a transparent background to an image, just download giffy.

WIP!
Wow, this will be my second pixel art piece that I will have completed. Just thought I'd do this to see if I can make the deadline. I decided to do a magazine cover for "The Roman Woman". The front cover features the "flavian" hairstyle popular among the elite women around the time of Emporor Hadrian. I drew this from a photo of a bust from my art history book. The hair is going to be the most difficult but I'm having trouble deciding what kind of dither pattern I should use for a smooth surface. Any suggestions?
The finished product will have the title as well as captions or whatever you call them. :-)

What is it?
Caesar lies dead on the floor of the senate as the sun fades. Brutus remains with bloodied knive standing in the shadows.
the space is very hard to deal with for 3 colros which is why im
thinking of making ti larger (and thereby more clear), especially since
right now i havent go room to do much like dither etc so the
restrictions are particularly felt.

I always hated Roman stuff...so it took a bit of effort to even do anything. I decided to recreate the painting in the wiki article due to lack of inspiration.
I just wanted to see what I could do within the limitations. I got bored with it and doubt I'll have the time to finish it but I'm putting it up here anyways.

Its not really a shade of yellow anymore, In my opinion, as my brown wasnt a red shade ill feel i was treated unfairly for this contest, but still, it does look nice, just make it become more of a shade of yellow rather than Brownish Gray.

I think not , I mean, yes it's a shade of yellow, but it feels like it's not within the spirit of the rules of this weeks challenge.

Bah.. I stand no chance at all.. darn your skills, darn them!
Cool challenge, though!
EDIT: To be honest.. I'll just make another one.. I'm not happy with the one I made. It bugs me.

Yeah, that was the idea, but I've ran out of ideas for the minimallistic (sp?) style I was intending to portray.Think I'll try something brand new.

Here's how my cycle goes:
- I see the new Challenge thread every monday afternoon after school. I get all excited, thinking up concepts and all that. Finish my homework, get some linework done, go to bed.
- Next couple of days I'm just drowned with homework and can't get anything done.
- See all the fantastic pieces that have come in during the week, just give up seeing as I can't imagine making better. Spend the rest of the week-end lazying around and doing nothing. Feel regret on Sunday afternoon when I feel i should have done something.
- Next week... etc.

Okay, I've put some time in my second piece, it feels more dynamic than my first. I need to clean up stuff and change the palette, but Im confident that this version will be my entry.

Sampe, sorry i didnt say this last post, i hadn't realised until just now, i dont like the Crowd being Square-Headed.... But wait and see what others think first.

@Sampe, I too think the square heads could be better, you don't even need eyes really. Just hint at a crowd with some selected outlining perhaps. Black is somewhat underused.
@drZool, your looks great :D

I don't know if I'll finish this by the deadline but I'll submit it as regular pixel art. One thing I've learned: Smaller is certainly better especiall with the way I work = slow.

Khorin, thats starting to get towards loking nice, but i agree with the smaller is better thing, so much easier to make.

Arrrrrrghhh the dithering is tiresome to draw. The helmet needs more shine. Frankly I needs more work all over. This is just a WIP...
|
Posted By: drZool
Date Posted: 17 March 2007 at 2:46am
Khorin: It's getting beautiful! About the size, yes smaller is easier, I had to shrink mine from 400x300 to 320x240 to cope with all the dithering this challenge needs. (My thunderstruck entry contains almost no dithering)
