Based off of this picture:

:) In juuust black and white! :P

I'd like to improve the face in general and keep it to two colors.

Hey, that's not too bad.

A few things I noticed, though:
The eyes are too far apart
The eyes are off-set a bit in the original
The lips seem a bit too small

It's not bad, though.

Here's an mspaint edit:

1. resized the original picture to your B&W image size using IrfanView
2. traced with bright red so I have no problem separating the outline from darker colors
3. cleaned up
4. colored with dark grey, then added midtones with a brighter shade
5. added the highlights
6. dithered starting from the darkest color, the highlights colored white, then finally added the darkest shades using black

The next thing I would do is probably add more definition around the nose and maybe around the lips.

I hope this helps.

EDIT: Added 7 with a different dithering style (vertical lines)

i don't like the dithering, on either of them, you can make a way better picture with a lot less amount of dithering

Using 2 colors? Care to explain? Give a suggestion how?

That's quite a challenge with two colors in such a small space.  Dithering is going to look weird without a third color.

in my opinion, you shouldn't be using 50 or 75 % dithering with something
this small..

I thing you should forget about dithering on this one and go for a dif, style. maybe a KOF fighter portrate? just a thought

Well, I took Drunkduck's step five, and I came up with this:

The key to monochromatic pictures is contrast...
I brought out most of the shadows with plain
old black, I made sure to leave enough white
to show some nice high lights here and there...

I dunno, it's not the best edit in the world, but I hope this helps you.

Just kept the two colors for the heck of it, not really for anything else.

In other forums I got suggestions to use different types of dithering and I plan to do that.

:) Thank you all for your help. !

This I did just by looking at the picture BTW, not tracing over it.
