CHALLENGE: It's Evolving

Make an original Pokemon with 2 evolutions.

Rules:
Use this canvas for your Pokemon and its 2 evolutions


No color restrictions, well 256 max :p
No animations

FAQ:
The template may be recolored as one needs. You may change the balls to elemental stones for example. You may AA, You may recolor the BG say for original gameboy, or gameboy color.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp - submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8 - WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

It would be nice for you guys to tell me what you think of them, because I want to do well in this challenge. And yes, the lineart on the last one is how I did the others. I firstly clean it up, then make my canvas bigger and copy it over, off the frame. Then I redo it, bit by bit. Works so far.

Electric-type Pokemon

Pixely is created when attempting to save art as JPG.  The red pixely distorts, and as it evolves, Green and Blue pixely's begin to mutant out of Red.  Found only in the gardens of n00bs in the evening when doing their homework and decide to give MSPaint and pixel art a try.

I actually think making an evolving Pokemon out of ones avvy is a great starting point. Especially like this one which is a version of the avvy rather than the avvy itself.

3. It will NEVER abandon you or run away... Or run at all...
4. Water can't effect it... its a rock...

8. Easiest pokemon to catch... ever...
9. Other uses:
 
Paper Weight.
Door Stopper
Weapon (If Thrown)
Tool (Hammer)
 
It's the most perfectest pokemon EVER. HARD AS A ROCK!

i have no problem, just put tome more effort into the actual pixeling of it, though and then it will be good.  looks at other pokemon sprites and get an idea of the style

I've been looking through all the pokemon sprites, and man, some of these things are really creepy. Giant robots with seven eyes, never blinking, staring into your soul.

4. Water can't effect it... its a rock...
 
I beleive most rock pokemon in any pokemon game i have ever played are weak to water and grass!
 
grass i haven't a clue why but water definately if you use basic geography... water moves into cracks within the rock, freezes overnight, the water expands, pushing the rock out and making cracks, eventually over time the rock shatters completely.
 
not the best pokemon ever ^_^

i think you are getting farther away from the style than the first one.  there is little to no dithering, no selout, lack of contrast, etc on yours, and those things are some of the basic essentials of the pokemon sprites.

They're called Woolly Mammoths.  It's really cute, but the style is all wrong for a pokemon.

Looking good, I especially like the 2nd one.

The shading on the head of the 3rd one looks a bit off..
Maybe make the 3rd one look more agressive. Most pokemon go from cute to agressive so it would be more fitting

Well spotted - it is a colour reduce. I'm assuming that's OK for rough sketches, as long as the final piece is hand-pixelled?
 
I mean, I've also done a bunch of rough pen-and-paper sketches to come up with ideas, but that doesn't have an impact on the validity of the finished work based on said sketches, does it?

dont post the color reductions here...  now all you are doing is getting suspicion towards your art.  just pixel it by hand and use the original as a reference, color reductions just hurt you because then you dont learn style, you just learn basically paint by numbers.

if you make a sketch yourself, then trace it, dont just color redux that either.  your new enough to the scene that you actually need to put the work into it and learn how to do it before you start taking such huge shortcuts.

edit: correction, you arent new here, so you should know better.  no, color reductions 99% of the time are never allowed or tolerated.

That's the style, selout is part of the pokemon style. BG in these games have always been a shade of white

Just a warning to you, original means you designed and colored it yourself, all by yourself. Original Pokemon there seems like quite the leap in skill, technique and execution.
Challenges are about challenging yourself more than challenging others. For that we have the Gym

To he who asked up there. Pokemon of original nature. Should look like a Pokemon yet not be one. Creativity is key.

Not being a pokeholic myself, I was wondering the same thing. My first idea was for a robot lawnmower: MOWBOT -> MOWBOTNIK -> FLYMOWBOTNIK.
 
But then I figures that people would think I wasn't taking this challenge seriously.

The template may be recolored as one needs. You may change the balls to elemental stones for example. You may recolor the BG say for original gameboy, or gameboy color...Its a template

a long time I didn't post anything. The challenge is very interesting, so I tried to start something. The siez must be corrected, the third evolution must be foudn, and color is not there. But it's a WIP :)

@terley, Seems very unPokemon to me. I think ite too human and has too many colors. Pokemon are rather simple things. You're good so maybe you'll work it out...hmmm

And AdrianJensen is quite right, this is a major WIP, I'm aware that my "Pokemon" are quite bland right now, I just wanted to check that it's the right style before continuing (No one has answered BTW)

I never planned on submitting this from the start, as it is far from original and looks nothing like the Pokemon style.

BTW, this piece is far from finished, but I'll likely not finish it.



I might actually make one to enter into the contest if I have enough time.


Sony-type Console

Strong against: Nintendo, and Microsoft-Type Consoles.
Weak against: 9 year olds with too much energy.

I would actually remove the lightest highlight for the flesh, because pokemon shading is usually very simple. One or two shades, because their pixel artists were lazy :)

Just thought I'd throw in my progress so far...
 
My line of pokey-mans are based on http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&q=chimenea - chimeneas  and other furnace type things...so I guess that makes them fire types.
 
I've got some drawings done for he 1st and 3rd forms, but I'm farthest along on the 2nd form.
 
 
2nd forms get no respect - who ever cares about Ivysaur or Wartortle?
 
Anyway, let me know what you think of it before I get too far...

Love the Pokemon Rynen10k, IMO the outlines are a bit too black and defined.

When I was making the sprite, it had a lighter outline to it, but after looking at some of the reference, I noticed that most of the pokemon have a bit darker of an outline than I had thought....
 
Here's the comparisons of the 2 versions, the left, the lighter outline, the middle, the most recent version, and the right is Bronzong, which I have been using as reference so far for this sprite.
 
 
Does the left one look better? I kinda like it the way it is right now, but I'm not sure...
