I'm making a little checkers game for multiple handheld platforms, and I need some CC to improve the look of the game! Seeing as there are already so many classic games out there, our release needs to be as unique as possible! Ideas of interesting features to make the game special are appreciated :)
Here's what I've done so far.
Thanks for your time!
Ideas for graphics:
- Game logo "watermark", covering the four center squares.
- Shadows from top right corner.
- Fancy reflections under chess pieces.
- Multiple interesting moving animations.

Maybe some very simple wooden texute on the sides of the board.
To make it more interresting, maybe let the player choose out of 4-6 characters. Place the players next to the board.
Example image:
(of course you should make something like this in your own style)
you can make some frames:
-normal
-lose piece
-kill opponents piece
-lose
-win

Idea: Everytime you move make the last place the checker just was explode! Then it could "Extreme Checkers of Impossibility".

Thanks for the replies guys.
@dragonrc: Made the wooden texture (took a while, but I think it was worth it!
Well, the max canvas we can use is 240x240, and we're already at 223x223 with what I've posted. I think we're only going to have space for a small score bar on the top with player names and points won, etc. Good idea though.
I don't really understand what you mean by frames :)
@soda: Do you mean, after a checker moves from one place to another, the tile on which he was standing on previously disappears? That could be fun, but I think it would be really easy to get your checkers stuck, and the game would always being a tie!
Here's the update!

It looks much better with that wooden texture

Yeah it's a bit vague.
For the character above, the losing frame would be:

I like it so far. The frame of the checkerboard is really well done.
I think profile pictures of the players looks fun and maybe some reactions to the game. Like if they get kinged they make an excited or kind of "aha!" face. And if they loose a piece them make a sad or ":O" face. And finally if they win they could have their arms out in victory or if they loose they could have their hands cover their face. Those sort of differences are always neat to see.
And instead of having just the two checkers on top of each other (like you would for kinged pieces in real checkers) how about you design an entirely new piece... like one that looks like a crown? and if it gets unkinged it could melt back into two or something.
I'm not sure if all of these are possible but I thought I'd throw in my two cents. :) good luck.

That's a good idea - again, not sure about the profile faces, but it could be a possibility. Maybe we could add some tiny tiny faces next to the players' names on the score bar.
Off-topic: shocked at the number of posts you made in the WIP forum!!! Aleiav takes over pixeljoint!

bwahahahaa..
well if all else fails you could have the top right corner for the blue and bottom left corner for the red.. there should be enough room for lives display score and all that jaaazzz.

Sorry about the late update, I have actually been working on this a lot, but didn't take the effort to post the newest stuff. Anyway, we have a basic checkers game! Now, it's all to adding cool features that make it unique. First off, funky selection animations!

And here's a little "kinged" animation - we didn't like the black and white flashing too much (must have been tired when I made it) so the programmer will just code one frame of white screen instead.

Very nice overall, and the wood grain is excellent. A suggestion I have is that you add a black line on one side of the diagonal highlights in the corners to give the look of multiple pieces of wood joined together and add some realism. Another thing is that the pieces look like they could have some antialiasing from the actual checker into the outline, just a pixel here and there to reduce the jaggies around the highlights.

Is this what you meant? I think it looks pretty nice :P
Here are also my numerous attempts at death animations. The results hurt my eyes so much I decided to go for the simple, blinking animation.

Sorry Metaru, I wouldn't feel good using your animation for a game that will be sold! We decided to go with my first attempt.
On to the spells: "Summon Wall", "Summon Fire" and "Summon Abyss". Names are very 'working names', so suggestions on those are of course appreciated.

I'll be honest, I didn't read the whole thread, but has anyone yet asked why you can see the sides of the checkers looking straight down on a flat board?
Just wondering..

Oblique pictorial perspective perhaps...

I was hoping the board would read as slightly tilted towards the viewer. Besides showing the sides of the checkers and other sprites, is there a way I could make it read better? Thanks for pointing that out.

Im not too sure about the oblique perspective, i quite like it how it is tbh

It's perfectly square and doesn't look tilted in any way you try to see it
well you could take the easy way out and just foreshorten the top of the frame, but that probably will look .. i dunno.. like taking the easy way out.. and take off the highlight in the blue on the top.
change the pieces then. if you want to
