I've made a few items and wanted some C&C.

C&C welcome as always. ;)

The crown is a bit unshaded and needs some more contrast to get a real nice shiny look. The gems could use some shading too. Also, the darker colors look green; try hue shifting to a more orange color as the shades get darker.
The apple is okay but the highlight is pretty square; round it.
The parrot is awesome, no crits there. <3
The grapes are good as well but the shading is invisible at 100% zoom. Extend the darker colors farther.
The chicken leg is pretty good. No blaring mistakes but it just doesn't seem as well-done as the parrot.
The diamond could use some more contrast and a different color--they're really a lot more greyscale than that with only a hint of color.
The last thing reads really poorly and doesn't look like much. Is it a shield? Work on the design or perspective to make it clearer what it is.

Well, the problem was that in order to make the gems in the crown more 'gem-like' I needed to add a strong highlight, but with it only being two pixels high, any highlight would disappear into the gold behind it. I fiddled with adding recesses on the crown itself to give an 'inset' feeling to the gems, but again, with such a small canvas, small details get lost in the realm of 100%.

I saw a pixel tutorial once that was about chrome-like objects such as toasters that are really shiny and have strong conrasts in shade. I'll have to try and dig that up.

It's http://web.archive.org/web/20060114042942/www.tcp-ip.or.jp/~s-iga/tips/2-3metallic_objects.html - mozco and only the web archive has it anymore.

Ah, thats what it was, thanks MoD.

I think the problem is that I started drawing the finished product instead of starting from the basic elements.

So strip away all the fluff and start with just the gold band.

Are the colors alright or should I go more yellow?

I think it's pretty good, but what I was saying about the hue shifting is that the darker colors should have a slightly more reddish hue. Don't forget to give it some thickness as well.

wow, so nice to see new pixels JJ. These all look great. Maybe the bone on the chicken bone is a bit too white. Didn't mind the gold, but once mentioned...

could use some anti-aliasing on the border instead of black, to make it seem smoother and more realistic. LOVE the parrot

UPDATE:

I added more contrast to the crown.

And I made some cheese:

That's a great improvement to the crown! It looks really nice now.

The cheese is a fine addition, too. I think you should work on improving that shield/rag/brown whatever it is now :P. If it's a shield, add more color to it: add some metal borders, something to make it more interesting.

These little icons are really cool :)
