pmprog - looks cool. the perspective is great.
Malor - Try and blend the two worlds creatively instead of just using a straight line to separate them.
This challenge reminded me of some new Magic: The Gathering art. (I know, how nerdy of me.) Each of the cards has an ability called Split Second, and the art depicts alternate realities in a creative way. Here are some examples:
http://www.wizards.com/magic/images/mtgcom/fcpics/making/mr246_up0u5b04du009b1s.jpg - Sudden Death
http://magiccards.info/scans/en/ts/202.jpg - Krosan Grip
http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/general/Sudden_Spoiling.jpg - Sudden Spoiling
http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/general/Take_Possession.jpg - Take Possession

I wish I were brave and talented enough to perfect this idea.. but I think I'd be going in way over my head.
(Yes, it's inspired from the opening scene of the Wizard of Oz. If I decide to do it, I'll probably make the bottom half Black and White, just like in the movie.) If I remember correctly, the witch was on a bike.

@AdamPlays: Something just screams Wizard of Oz, except the Wicked Witch is on a push bike. Oz or not, excellent idea :-)

There are also a few older cards where a monster has 2 different forms, and you flip the card upside down to change. The art is split up in those too.

Yes you're absolutely right. For examples of those, http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/index.aspx?term=flip&Field_Name=on&Field_Rules=on&Field_Type=on&setfilter=Kamigawa%20Block - head here.

@Malor: Your other idea didn't suck, just needed tweaking. eg. like the rear-entrace to the mansion looked like a delapidated shed. Or even size reversals.
Anyway, good luck on your Valhala!

Hmmm, if (by fluke, or assassination of all the real pixel artists here) I win, I'm gonna do a Magic:TG border design challenge (not actual cards, but redesign the border/layout)... Anyhoo, back to real life... here's a small update WIP. I would really like some suggestions on the shoes and trousers, cos something seems off to me...

Yeah, the problem is.. I'm using Photoshop ;) So I was wondering if there was a tool that did the counting.

File -> Save for web... In the window that opens, make sure the image format is a palette-based one (GIF or PNG-8) and the maximum allowed amount of colours is 256. Below the colour table there should be a number that shows you how many colours there are in the image (unless there are more than 256, but I doubt that's the case).
That's how I do it, at least. Haven't found any other way to do it.

Image > Mode > Indexed Color (it will be greyed out unless your image is currently RGB)
Be sure your palette is set to Exact.
Then you'll have a strict color table that you can micromanage. Hooray!

another way is to temporarily (don't hit save here) go to image mode and make 'indexed' then under the same menu click 'color table'. Pie's way (mine too) is far better ;)

Sorry for stupid question, but can I use some program for automatic dithering, or must dither my picture manually pixel-by-pixel?

You must manually dither.

I'm not qualified to advise, but I will point out that http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/7006.htm - Helm uses automatic dithering tools .

Btw, the rule about the canvas is: Canvas Size: 320x240
Does that mean the canvas size HAS to be 320x240 or can the canvas be smaller?
Edit:
Should I use the outline? I personally think it adds a bit more depth to the whole

Delete it from your profile, and resubmit it, just without the challenge box ticked, because it's definately worth having in your gallery.
Unless one of the mods could just remove it from the contest without deleting it?

I don't think it should really matter if you use a tool to dither or not, but 90% of the time you're better off doing it by hand, you learn more and it looks better, the beautiful thing about pixel art is it shows how much better man can be compared to machine-made effects ;)
(well actually everyone knows the beautiful thing about pixelart is all the demoscene tits and dragons but whatever...)

The size IS and can ONLY be 320x240. If you really can't fill those extra 40 pixel blocks, paint them black like a movie strip or something...

Okay this kind of confused me, because the colors also doesn't say "max 32 colors". So I went by this and went crazy with colors... Then I looked at all the other submissions and realized that I everyone has under 32 colors.
So... sh*t.
Dammit man, I really wanted to enter this challenge... I really worked friggin HARD on this picture jal, rediculously hard.
I fell asleep at 3 in the morning and left the oven on last night.
Well anyways, this is what I did, I've already submitted it into the challenge, but here it is...:
Is there anyway I can submit this?

I think if you hustle, you can get this down to 32 colors before the deadline. I just picked at a bit in Photoshop and saw that there are lots of opportunities to unify colors, plus you've got more than a few that are only used on one or two pixels.
This is great, by the way. I'm really impressed.

|
Posted By: BlingShyne2
Date Posted: 22 July 2007 at 10:37pm
Whew! I was gonna give up and not reduce the colors but when I started picking at it myself I actually drove about 30 miles to a friends house to use the computer.
A few things happened to the sky and the ground that I didn't really like, but other than that, seeing how many colors I originally used I thought it was gonna turn out looking like a C64 game or something. Thankfully it still looks somewhat decent:
Hatch if you wouldn't have said anything I seriously would have said f**k it. Thanks for your opinion!
Anyways, There it is, hope it at least gets a participation ribbon.
I kid. Like it matters, I'm sure Illke and Fool are going to submit at 11:59 and invert our anuses with greatness.
