Hey guys! Want to help a girl out (yes, I AM a girl!) and give me useful critiques on this work? It's not pixel art (I'm using 100% msWord if you believe it!) and I really want to make it GREAT! So be critical!!!

Thanks!

What do you mean you are using MSWord?

One of the things that helps when using this vector style is to use different line weights to show depth.

You use MSWord as a vector drawing program ???

You should better use something specialized like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (an open source product very impressive... working under Linux or Windows).

For the picture, it's a very nice picture.

For my point of view, some shades are missing, and different line weights will be good too...

Nice work ! But still needs enhancement...

sedgemonkey: below is a screenshot of me working on the piece (recolouring the tail actually, see how it's selected and I've opened the format autoshape menu?), hope it helps clarify how I'm doing it.

jujucece: please don't tell me to get "better" programs or make disgruntled faces at me, some of us can't afford to buy AND aren't allowed to download new programs, we have to work with what we have.

alright, I'll hop to work on some different thicknesses of lines. :) thanks for the input.

Wow, never knew you could do such things with MS Word
Did you even do the sky background in Word?

the sky, lol the sky, what hatred I have now for that damn sky. It's about 3 different textures made semi-transparent and then grouped, with a transparent texture overtop and some random wiggly shapes that are gradients within themselves scattered around so it looked "uneven" It took me longer to do that I will admit. Stupid sky.

and yeah, you can do almost anything with msWord, it's fun that way :-)

saiklor: I'm very sorry if I shocked you... But I didn't know that you had such restrictions... Sorry again...

But if you can download and try a litte bit inkscape, I'm sure you'll be impressed...

*high five to Saiklor* I used to use Word97 to do this stuff all the time when I took Comp Ed in high school, but my stuff was never quite this good.... you totally win a million cool points for doing this (I hipe you put it on DevART or something when you finish).

As for C/C, I think you should add some textures to the water, like a squigly wave formation? I like how you did the sky, so dont leave the water with just that gradient! I will cry if you do ^^

emiko: I wouldn't want to make you cry so I'll be working on that  next :)

and YAY! someone else uses unconventional programs! YAY! *high five!*

And I'm trying to bring it up to snuff enough to post on epilogue.net, so when it gets good enough you'll see it there!

Ooh, I like all the different colours in her hair. I think perhaps it could do with a bit of shading/highlights in the water. It's really good.

not sure on your downloading restrictions, but i could easily email you more advanced vector art programs, like xara-x.

I don't want to sound ungrateful but this isn't my computer (it's my parents) and so I can't download onto it w/o their permission and they're out of town just this moment.

I WILL take you up on the offer next week sometime when I get my laptop back on the go, it's currently running stupidly slow and needs a digital kick in the pants, so to speak.

I tried too to do something with word like you, many years ago, but I stopped with smiles and strange shapes

yeah word is pretty OK for vectoring things. very usefull for spicing up school reports 'n stuff

now for the piece. i think that the submersed lower line of the tail should fade out faster , to comply with the water density that the other lines show.

allso her hands are weird. her fingers are more like tentacles, and the left hand has 5 fingers and no thumb. draw the line between the ''thumbfinger'' and indexfinger a bit further(since the thumb is set back on the hand IRL too

she's allso looking crosseyes, and the lower part of her face seems to come forward a bit too much.

allso i think that you should choose between shading and no shading(crab is shaded but she aint) and to make sure that the style of the water is the same as that of the sky(right now the water is very plain.. )it might be wise to save that for the last though.. so you can work normally on the parts of the pic. that are under water. its annoying to have to flip througs dozens of layers to get to where you wanna be =)
