CHALLENGE: Retro Remake

Pick a scene from from one of your favourite retro games (preferably from the 80s, think NES/C64) and remake it. If you want, you may also change the graphics style, like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/BombActZerobox.jpg - Bomberman Act: Zero or http://emroca.com/ - Emroca 's http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/9486/emrocamariioland2bf5.jpg - brilliant rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom . Just make sure it's still the same kind of game!

Rules:
  • Canvas size needs to be the same as the resolution the original game ran on (Wikipedia is your friend!). If that's too small for you (the Game Boy's small screen comes to mind), make it twice as big.
  • Colour restriction: 32 colours max

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

CHALLENGE VOTING

/pixels/poll.asp?id=1054' name='vote' target='_blank'>Vote now for your favorite pixelart in this week's challenge!

Basically we are suposed to remake an scene from an 80's - 90's(90's are retro, at this point) game, mario grabbing the flag at the end of the level or the contra commandos running thru the jungle level for example, either in it's original art or by complete redesing of the original, in the resolution of the console were the game was played (in this case, NES's resolution 256x240px)
Animations are allowed as they are not prohibited in the above mentioned rules.

did I miss anything?

Can I do a Creatures mock up?

The reason I ask, is that I've already done some remake sprites and background before. I know the challenges are for new pieces, but I'm concerned that if I do a new Creatures mock somebody might reject it because I have done others previously.

Thanks

I never played on other systems than a computer! How could I do something like this??

The best thing I can think of is commander Keen, I played that... but thats a very high resolution I think to pixel!!

Metaru: no, that's pretty much it!
(My apologies if the challenge description is a bit wonky - I never was all that good with words)

pmprog: a Creatures mockup is fine as long as everything was made during this week. Good luck :)

@Lollige:

Best thing to do is search for a C64, Spectrum, Gameboy emulator, then find some game roms to download for them and load up and play.

Most emulators support taking screenshots, so then you can use them as references (as a whole or in parts) to create your new screen

We can do classic arcade games too right? also, the only part of the original game we have to match is the resolution, not the colors and tiles etc?

Ok I have a very stupid problem
when I open my cool c64 emulator
and I open a game like froggy or donkey kong (I figured out that that ducktales game has been on the c64 too, I played that.. but its from 1991..)
I dont know how to play it..
it says press f1 or press space to start, so I press those keys, the game starts, just like I had seen them when I played them with mame (yay thanks to mame I know some old games!!) and then? the arrow keys do not work.. what to do? no key seems to respond on every game!!

But i like the way it is turning out, so i'll finish it regardless of whether or not it applies to the weekly challenge.

Yeah, I'd totally allow this. The rules did state 80s "preferably" so we're not limited to any particular year. Actually I'd probably say it's safe to say anything over 10 years old is considered retro now. We'll work on a case-by-case format for now though... just in case anything comes up.
Just don't be a douche and try to bend the rules because you can't be bothered to come up with any true original idea.

BTW, I tried making Pit look like a mix between his original sprite and his model for SSB:B.

looks nice so far, but i think you can do a lot better in terms of quality with the colours with the max that's set for the challenge... Youre at 15 colours at the moment (and i think thats because you left some old colours out there too?) So use those extra 17 colours to givve it a bit more depth and make the image smoother (except if you want the dithering to be clearly visible)...

I think it will have to be Golden Axe as the first Streets Of Rage was made in 1991 and TMNT was made in 1992. Luckily I can get away with 1989 for Golden Axe. xD

I knew I should've called Joust sooner. I guess there might end up being duplicates then. I have a small amount of a remake done so far but it might end up fizzling out like all the challenge pieces I've done so far have. D:

Oh, and resolution is 292x240 if you're doing the arcade version (I assume there are others). Wikipedia and MAME agree.

Just to be certain, I think that the whole point of this competition is to "REMAKE" a scene, NOT just redo the graphics of a said screenshot. Nothing's been completely set in stone in the rules, but by just redoing graphics for a screenshot, you're actually breaking one of the rules of Pixeljoint....just to clarify...

How so? I can understand it's ripping if you merely edit the art of a game some, but if you're not using any of the original pixels (a total overhaul like it should be in a graphical redo) how can it be cited for ripping?

Bob, I totally agree. I don't even understand why people would redo perfectly good graphics in the same res and style of the old graphics. Also, based on the examples in the first post, I think the intended challenge was creating a scene based on the graphics of the game.

Those aren't remakes.  Those are just pictures inspired by the original games.  I see the title 'Retro Remake' and I think exactly what the actual site with that name does and that's take an old game and improve on it with modern tech.  And as far as I'm concerned almost any screenshot of a game is a 'scene'.  That's actually the only reason I even bothered to make some time this week and do one of these challenge things.  Just pixelling a general picture based on elements of the original don't interest me, but pixelling looking like an actual playable game, now thats what I like doing.  Now ya got me thinking I wasted my time...

Just because the canvas size is the same, doesn't mean the res is... C64 in multicolour had doublewide pixels, but with the same canvas and now 32 colours, obvious difference. And as mentioned, style doesn't have to stay the same.

Sorry guys, especially Wolverine, the rules this week seem to be unclear as we have two camps of thoughts. I think we should allow both takes on the rules for this and let the voting decide.

Actually, that is what I'm driving at. The whole point is to remake a scene from a retro game. However, it seems like some people here are just editing existing screenshots from other games. DO NOT DO THIS. I guess since the rules are unclear, I would think that both mock-ups, and scenes are fine. Just wanted to make it clear that edits of originals are forbidden, and if broken, thou shall be forbidden from the garden of Eden!!!

Megaman remade as a GTA game on the Game Boy.

This isn't an edit of an existing screenshot, but with the rules a little hazy, I thought I'd put it here first before submitting.

It's supposed to look like a remake: a game ported to a newer system with improved graphics. The rules say "Just make sure it's still the same kind of game!", so you can't turn it into a 'GTA game'.

Well here's the thing...

Pick a scene from from one of your favourite retro games (preferably from the 80s, think NES/C64) and remake it. If you want, you may also change the graphics style, like http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/BombActZerobox.jpg - Bomberman Act: Zero or http://emroca.com/ - Emroca 's brilliant rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom. Just make sure it's still the same kind of game!

"Pick a scene" "and remake it", "If you want, you may also change the graphic style"

See, the way I read that was you can make it look all shiny and pretty with newer graphics or you can make it look as it did in back then. Which is what I did.

I thought I was following the rules of the challenge, now I'm not so sure. If people think it should be deleted, then have it deleted. I don't want to start trouble over a trivial misunderstanding.

Right, I also said I don't want to start any trouble over a misunderstanding.

Taken from the link you just posted...

Also, occasionally games that were originally released only in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan - Japan are remade and re-released in the West, most notably http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros.:_The_Lost_Levels - Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels ,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros.:_The_Lost_Levels - Super Mario Remake, (wiki page)

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was also released on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Color - Game Boy Color as part of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._Deluxe - Super Mario Bros. Deluxe , under the title of Super Mario Bros. For Super Players. Like the All-Stars version, the player could save the game and continue from the last level played (or any level completed up to that point), not just from the beginning of a world, like in the original. It was compatible with the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Printer - Game Boy Printer . However, the game did not feature any upgraded visuals (aside from some graphics such as water and lava now being animated rather than static), and since the screen resolution of the Game Boy Color was smaller than the NES, the view distance of the player is reduced. In this version, the worlds are called the Extra Courses, and Worlds 9-D are not included (though they can be accessed with a GameShark).

"However, the game did not feature any upgraded visuals"

As I've said, if people see fit to delete it, then I won't protest. Other than here and now. Ok, I'm done.
