CHALLENGE: Start your Engines!

This week's challenge, PJ Concept Motors,  comes from panorama challenge winner, http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/3987.htm - raynoa . PJ Concept Motors = Pixelling a concept car or vehicle. Vehicle must have connection with some pixelart technique. For example, some zoomed dither technique on the hood, or square pixelled lights, pixelled-dither pattern on wheels, etc. Start your engines!

Rules:
  • Colors - 26 including transparency if used
  • Canvas Size - 190 x 140 max.
  • Transparency - Allowed (www.iaza.com)
  • Animation - Allowed
  • Other - The pixel must contain a 'PJ Motor' label using original pixel fonts. It can be placed anywhere on the canvas but should be artistically placed.

Tips/Refs -
Usually concept cars are drawn in different angles and perspectives, so feel free to experiment with it. Isometric is cool.

Here are some tutorials on concept cars.

I am sending a PM to raynoa to clear clearly define the "Vehicle must have connection with some pixelart technique."

It does seem/read a little wierd. Until he responds I'll offer what my take was on that line. Say you draw your concept car and, however you choose to do so. The paintjob on the vehicle could have flames. Except the flames could be pixelled using an 'exaggerated' form of dithering, like 2X pixels.

Last week we encountered a similar glitch and I'll try to prevent that this week.

So, whats is with the "PJ Motor' label using original pixel fonts" What is pixel fonts? :s

Edit: Shouldn't the challenge be Start your engines like it says on the hp?
Not Star Your Engines?

"Vehicle must have connection with some pixelart technique"
Let me fully describe this sentence:

I just wanted to look how pixelartists can show themselves in concept car design. Not only inventing car, but also add some pixel style to it.

So that is why I said about pixelarts connection.
I drawed some scheme what I mean:

K, free to ask there what isn't clear. Sorry about these difficult rules, but it's a challenge!

Hmm, I don't thought about it, because I'm not working with 3d, but it sounds right. But also try to play with geometry, not only with textures!)

i know i know, i was thinking on a 3D model spacecraft someone posted some time ago using a low res texture. but when i mean texture, in this case it would aplly to the paintjob, and we are called to make a concept car, that really looks like a concept car(=not an sprite of a car), as pixel-ish as posible.
I'll try to make an example.

Just draw label for your car. Graphical or just pixel letters (pixel font).

I made a line (and very crappy colour sample) of the concept i have in thougt...

You might think what the pixel-ish things are gonna be... i think ill make the rear lights square, the rims are gonna have pixelish-ness and maybe some more small details... (also still to come are front and rear view, so that might be an answer to the question how im gonna make that all visible)...

Hey, what does the pj label look like? Just write pixel joint or something?

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 24 September 2007 at 6:50pm
raynoa(crazy Russians) means like the name of the car in chrome. Like 'Ford' kinda like a logo. Because they are so small. He's saying to place it by the car like you would see in a car ad. ya know...

@ someone up there, Pixelfonts is fonts made from pixels as opposed to 'Arial' with no AA.

The gallery in the links section has several pixelfonts links. FFF (fonts for flash) is an all pixelfont foundry (font makers). www.04.jp has several original free ones. This challenge calls for original pixel letters tho.

do you know how much this looks like a (new) ford focus, especially the front? (I love the ford focus... especially the old one, but the new one may be one of the few new cars on the market that i like even a bit)...

Edit:
From flat to iso:
>>>

I hope it's a bit recognizeable... you might still ask: wheres the squarishness? Well... the taillights should look square-ish... same for the door handles and the exhaust (at the corners of the rear). Wheels might become pixel-ish, and paint job maybe (but i dont think so)...

So raynoa, if the pixel-ish things are not clearly enough there for you, please tell me (i dont want disapproval on content for a challenge)...

Hehehe, no I didn`t, and a hatchback wasn`t quite what I had in mind either
Cleaned up the lines a bit (and changed them alot) and added some basic shading.
The gigantic air intake.. thingy.. whatever in the front looks a bit silly so I think I`ll change it.

Edit:
@Varock: Oooh, that last one looks pretty good

Posted By: jalonso

Oh, I really like how the 'label' looks like a chandelier over the car in a showroom, sweet.
You could add oversized pixel fangs to that 'thingy'. Rules call for pixel form and you don't have any yet, just throwing

ps: I hope MashPotato makes an entry. I'd love to see her take on a car.

Hmm..perhaps not pixelly enough. Any thoughts?

Here is my WIP.  Diesel-Electric Hybrid (Biodiesel and Filtered vegetable oil compatible) engine sits underneath passenger compartment.  Entry is through the hatchback (the rear bumper serves as a step also.  The hood opens to a trunk area.  Computer assisted steering allows for the use of a standard steering wheel.  Rubber tank-like tread allows for quick stopping and maneuvering without tearing up the road or land, rubber pads easily replaceable and/or rotatable.  At around 2 and a half tons the 500 hp diesel plus the 67 hp electric allow freeway speeds with ease.  Retractable bumpers down for traffic, mostly for their safety. (up for off-road, more clearance)  Forget potholes, manholes without covers, small walls, shallow rivers/flooding.

2Varock Shade:
Hey, looks like we have family minivan there! I can advice that rear lights should be bigger. Square forms for example on doors are recognizeable, so it's green lights to finish this car;)

2Koch: Will be waiting for final picture, now this sketch isn't so good as description.

2Jiwestone: Great work there, reminds me Aston Martin too. And good work on label. About pixelly things - front grill is fully suitable for requirements.

I know... this won't be the definitive colour for the car... just making contrast with colours like the lights etc, so they stay visible for me when im working... I'm gonna expand the shadows now, and might do the same with highlights (not sure yet)... anyone with suggestions?

How about making the interior all 2X pixelly and cube-like...maybe not : /
How will you place the pixel techniques?
If you make the same iso but facing the viewer you'll have all four sides.

Been playing around with the front a little. Probably gonna stick to the original. The first one doesn`t really fit. I like the second one alot, but it is admittedly a total Aston Martin rip off (just had to try it though:P)

@ Varock : I think you have bumped into the same problem that I have regarding dithering. To make something look smooth and shiny while it is dithered is damn hard. I think you should remove (or at least reduce) the dithering on the glass and maybe try to add some sharper highlights?

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 28 September 2007 at 4:54pm
I think the third is the best here...but the first I actually think the first best fits the rules of incorporating 'pixel techniques' into the design. nvm me.

Yeah, by squaring off the front (even had square lights at one point) I was meaning to make it fit the rules better, maybe I can salvage it..but right now it feels very "off" in a way....maybe I`ll toss a coin or something to decide which one to go for:P

Pie's dead smiley, duh.
The hood is a solar panel that I think will pass as the 'pixel grid' : /

* used http://tinypic.com/index.php - http://tinypic.com/index.php didn't know about it.

EDIT:
Does the black part of the car seem to dark? Didn't when pixelling, but it does online.

Varock, the green part is looking great. The windows don't seem to be right in texture nor feel. They are slightly OTT.

Yes, I did edit the glass. After some hours of sleep my still-sleepy eyes saw it did need a change, although i haven't got a lot of time... *(Thanks for the sample of good looking glass on your car Jal . It was a lot easier to make glass-ish looking windows now. Or at least, I think it looks more like glass now)... Also added PJ Motors Logo-kind of thing (gonna make more detail in it I think, but this is the basic idea)...

Edit:

Front-side linework. I know, windscreen might look a bit sphere-ish and the car looks a bit higher cause of that... still... I think i did it quite fast. Now comes the bit of colouring this+putting both sides together in one piece...

I don't know but ive checked the proportions, and they are the same... I think it has something to do with the large amount of glass visible on the front/side view compared to rear/side view...

I made a correction on the first view btw, trying to make the windows look taller (by making the slope of the window on the front steeper)... I also submitted it... http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/25119.htm - (Click Here)

Varock, its an iso oddity. Sometimes you have to fudge a bit so its visually correct rather than iso correct. In your case I would make the green lower part thinner since its hidden by the from car for the most part. So that it looks correct. I battle this all the time, so weird.

well, i am not gonna edit it anymore, although you are right... i just dont have more time, its getting late here, i worked on it all day now so... it will stay this way (maybe an edit after the challenge, but also unlikely)...

Edit: I thought about it for a moment, but after all the work this just has to be done, cause it does waste the rest a bit...

I wasn't going to finish and enter mine but what the hell. Its added now.

Admittedly I only did so to give Adam's Larry a revenge on his former coworker.

Awesome entries guys! I really appreciate it.

2Jiwestone: I can say that if James Bond will see your concept, he will try to get it as soon, as possible! Nice work.
2Zlothien483: great entry, and absolutely fits the challenge rules, my fav I think=)
2Varock Shade: your entry is most interesting because of WIP steps, and this minivan looks original too.
2Adam: nice humorous entry!
2Jalonso: interesting sport car. l already saw your entry submitted in gallery, and agree with people in comments - flames on background looks better than grid)
