CHALLENGE: Selective Outlining

Using only 15 colors of your choice on a 150x150 canvas make an item on a transparent background which focuses on the SelOut (Selective Outlining) technique.

The pixel itself may be a figure, object or anything at all. While overall idea and general pixel prowess is of some importance in getting votes. The SelOut is what matters this week.

Rules:
  • Canvas Size: 150x150 pixels max.
  • Colour Restriction: 15 color palette max  (16th color is transparency).
  • Transparency: Must use to best judge the SelOut technique used.
  • Animations are allowed but probably not suited for judging purposes.
(download GIFFY from the FAQ page in the gallery or use http://www.iaza.com - www.iaza.com if needed. http://www.spriteart.com - www.spriteart.com has a great SelOut tutorial [see the links page])

Im afraid I'm still not sure what Sel Outline means.

Is it basicaly just like a show of wips?

Posted By: PJB21
Date Posted: 15 October 2007 at 2:40pm
correct me if im wrong, but is it basicly shading your linework as well?

(eg, light parts of the image have the corisponding linework lighter, while dark areas of shadow have a darker line)

thats what i got after a flick through the links anyway, feel free to correct me if im wrong.

You are correct PJB21. Its not quite that simple and good selout is a true skill worth learning. The most exaggerated examples are seem in Pokemon Gameboy game. They rely heavily on 'bad' selout.

Selout means "Selective Outling" meaning that it is not a simple black outline nor is it use of aa.

The best example of this is http://www.derekyu.com/extras/pixel01.html - a great tutorial by Derek Yu
If you go through his complete tutorial before just jumping to the Selout bit, you'll understand it alot better.

Hope that helps everyone

Quit nit-picky question...Do we have to have our piece touch all four sides of the 150x150? Or just be large enough to require that kind of canvas?

Posted By: PJB21
Date Posted: 16 October 2007 at 4:20am
i belive its the latter, since most pixel art has a 'bleed' area around it, and making a piece with a square outline (or rather square dimentions) would only add to the complcations and would typicly mean sqewing the image.

however i didnt make the comp, so i suggest waiting for a more experianced opinion.

Animations are best kept out of it, me thinks : /

Yes that's a max size of 150x150

Rules edited, thx guys.

I have a question.
Would a submission be allowed to take up one full side and half of two others?
Like, say, a mountain?

Posted By: PJB21
Date Posted: 17 October 2007 at 2:57pm
the max size is 150 pixels * 150 pixels, it can be smaller, but not bigger.

so a sprite of medium size, or an object maybe, something like that. of corse you could do a mountain, but remember it must have a transparent background, and as such should be a free standing entity.

Of course the image is still 150*150 I wasn't changing it.
I wanted to know if something that takes up 3/4 sides (leaving only the top of the landscape outlined) would be allowed.

Yeah, I'm hoping the lack of entries is because all of you suckas are working on your Pixelween entries.

Posted By: MashPotato
Date Posted: 21 October 2007 at 1:13pm
I think part of the reason for the lack of entries (so far, that is--there's still some time ), is that selout is kind of vague... I made an entry, and if you asked me I still wouldn't be able to explain to you what selout is exactly... the Zoggles and Derek Yu examples look quite different to me.

On a different note, there are currently some entries that aren't following the transparency rules.  Hurry, there's still time to fix it!

THERE's almost no selout in this , blackdragon.

Selective outlining means not having a black outline everywhere, but having a colored outline that changes depending on the color and light, its quite hard to selout something that has a black suit.  And those red gloves selout is quite shy tbh.

Oh, OK. Just checking, and good point. I just couldn't understand the concept O_o I always thought it meant making the outline smooter by breaking the outline a bit in places.

May I kindly ask why my entry failed? It followed all the rules. You even let some entries through that ignored the rules...

Post a pic of your entry. It's no longer visible now that it's been taken down.

I would if I could. But I'm not on my comp. Plus it's almost 10:00.

I was actually working on an entry for this and ended up getting a dissertation on the principles and evils of selout...So, while I won't have a piece ready in time for this I do think I learned a few things, and I think the piece will end up better...

Oh noes, it got rejected. Now I'm going to have to go and throw a hissy fit. Nah, just kidding.

Yeah, I was afraid I didn't quite get what a SelOut was. It's too late to get it back into the challenge, but at least I can figure out where I went wrong.

Contest ended already. You can still submit it, just not for the challenge.

And I'm still waiting for a response myself.
