Hey there Pixel Artists!
I recently started a website, which hopefully will become a real "internet landmark" in nearer future. Personally I think the concept is really cool and I believe it has lots of potencial - but see for yourself.
However, for a success it is also primarily neccessary to gain popularity and hence to get new participants and "clients", which is a little difficult right at the beginning.
The website consists of a big tower with 999 floors, quite similar to any pixel tower out there. Each floor has an apartment (outside and inside view) as well as an advertising space. Every apartment can be designed with (isometric) pixel art, while the advertising spaces ("billboards") are desingned just like a normal ad-banner.
As long as you don't want to make money with an appearance on TOWER 999 you may take part for free and design the apartment of your dreams, for example, and do some advertising for our own website. Or you can use it commercially and create a cool promotion for your business or website.
You can reach the site on http://www.tower999.com/ - www.tower999.com
Since you're a great community of pixel artists I thought this kind of advertsing might suit you! You're very welcome to create an apartment on TOWER 999 and hence do some advertising for your own page.
Of course, I would highly appreciate if you write something about my site or maybe add a link to your own site.
I would love to see some cool creations of you! :)
And don't forget to take part at the LOBBY CONTEST!
If you have any questions, let me know!
Thanks,
Jonnyyy

So... this is basically a giant ad? Thought this was another joint for a second.
Perhaps "Resources and Support" is a better place for this. And good luck with everything.

No, it is not only a simple giant ad.
It's a joint and free for everybody who has fun creating his or her own apartment but persons/companies who want to use it commercially (e.g. to advertise) have to pay for it - that's all.
If all apartments of TOWER 999 get occupied by people using Free Packages it's completely fine. First and foremost TOWER 999 should become a great internet landmark and even if somebody wants to use it commercially I will only accept great apartments - not every s**t. But the persons/companies who want to make money with an appearance of TOWER 999 should pay for it!
For all others it should be just fun to create an eye-catching and beautiful apartment and free (!) advertising of their own website and pixel art skills!

Oh, thats what thatThe PREMIUM PACKAGE is, i thought it was just a load of crap, well i'll join.

The Premium Package is basically the same as the Free Package - just for commercial use so you have to pay for it.
So for almost everyone here the Free Package is just fine!

I thought this was the appropriate section. Since everybody is allowed to contribute something to the project I thought it is collaboration.
As I said before: in the first place TOWER 999 should be an internet landmark! In the second place I try to make some money because people who want to make money with an apartment for themselves can also pay something for it...
For any noncommercial use it's completely free to take part and you're very welcome to join and present your skills and also your websites!

So if a freelance pixel pusher submits an apartment linking to their promotional portfolio then they have to pay?
|
Posted By: jonnyyy
Date Posted: 27 November 2007 at 2:58pm
Of course not!
It's only commercial if you're a company or if the main purpose of the linked website(s) is to make money (sell products) or promote a business/company which makes money. I think for most individuals and pixel artists pixel art is primarily a hobby and then sometimes a bit of a job!
I am sure for the vast majority of you the participation is completely free! Read for yourself in the FAQ of TOWER 999 and if you're still unsure just write me an email and ask. And when you have an answer from me you can still start to create your apartment!
I mean it's always an individual case but mostly I would say it's free! If you're unsure ask me and I'll tell you!
Btw.: The lower floors are really cheap and I think they're even not the worst place, and some of them are still free... just as a hint. But you may still use the Free Package if you like, of course!

How do I stake my claim to a room?

If you want to use it noncommercially, you just download the Free Template Pack, edit the templates (outside and inside apartment) and send them back to me when you have finsihed. You cannot choose the floor number when using the Free Package but you can tell me which one you would like to have (if you would like a special number) and I will see what I can do for you. Generally the better/more eye-catching an apartment is, the higher is the chance to get a high floor number (which is likely to be seen more often later than the lower ones).
If you want to use it commercially (which includes the billboard space), you should purchase a Premium Package (which is basically the same as the Free Package except some little things like the possibility to use image maps inside an apartment and choose/reserve the floor number), send the respective money (2 times the floor number you choose for a billboard + X "donation" for the respective apartment - just like described on the site) via paypal to my account and tell me the floor number(s) you would like to have reserved for you. Then download the Premium Template Pack and you can take your time and create your apartment/banner. When you have finished you send the files to me and I will add them to TOWER 999.
You can also design your apartment first and purchase a Premium Package (floor number) later but then your chosen floor number might already be reserved by somebody else. The early bird catches the worm in this case.
Quality-apartments are highly appreciated! :)

I remember that!

Yeah, I remember that, too. The internet is full of pixel towers and even Mr. Wong wasn't the one who invented them as far as I know! Although he has the most impressing one at the moment, I think.
And I don't get why it is condemnable if I want money from those people who want to use my platform to make money themselves...? I mean I don't want money from everyone and if some people spend money the page probably will become even more famous and this is good for anyone who takes part (be it commercially or not!) - not only for the people who pay or myself - isn't it?
The aim is to create an internet landmark and you can be part of it... or not! It's completely your choice. I don't deny that I also try to make some money with it but I don't do it at any cost and hey, everybody needs money, everybody wants money, why not try it this way?
I have lots of other ideas I would love to realise some day, but they all need seed money... so I had to think of a way and now I just try...

I find it to be bad design, loading 999+ images on one page...
|
Posted By: jonnyyy
Date Posted: 29 November 2007 at 2:00pm
Yes you're right... but there are hardly other ways to realise the concept. And in these days most people have broadband-internet so the loading should be not that problem anymore. The higher images load first, the lower images later... so even if TOWER 999 should get full: if you just start at the top and scroll down it should be no big deal! And if not you have to wait some seconds what probably also won't kill you... :)

Any site that projects to earn money through it's graphical design should pay its artists despite what you think. Without any decent graphical representation, your site will not work at all (and I hardly think it would even with it).
I'm not trying to shoot you down, I think you've done that quite nicely yourself. A true entrepreneur would have thought this through a bit more - morally, financially, and realistically.
All in all, I suggest that nobody contribute to this site without some monetary gain.

I can understand your point and I even thought of something like this before.
But it's not as easy to realise as it may sound. Since I live in Germany I have to follow german law. If I pay you, I would be an employer and would have to pay tax, we would have to do contracts and stuff and much more. That would be quite a big effort with lots of time and (paper) work involved. And since I do all this in my freetime and also have to do other things beside TOWER 999, I just can't realise it this way - not least because it's very unsure if there's any money at all to make with this project.
But I have another idea for a kind of cooperation:
What if you would present your skills as freelance pixel artists with an apartment on TOWER 999 and act as a designer for people with businesses or companies who would like to take part but aren't able to create a cool apartment themselves?
You would get listed on an extra page (as freelance pixel artists) after "proofing your professional" skills and potential buyers could contact you and you could "sell" your skills as a service and create an adequate apartment for them.
An apartment of you on TOWER 999 would then be an exhibtion of your skills and a hallmark (of course for free!) - and you could negotiate a price with interested people by yourself without me getting involved.
I could imagine that it's not easy for many persons/companies to find a designer who can do proper pixel art with respective results that suit them.
In addition if TOWER 999 succeeds it would also a promotion for you as an pixel/graphic artist in general - not only for tower apartments!
And if it does not work then it just doesn't. Then neither me nor you will make any money at all... ;)

I really don't think you understand. By you (possibly) gaining money from your site and not paying the artists that do the work for your site without signing a contract (even for free) is illegal. It is called theft unless you can guarantee a portion of any income made from the site or if you can convince an artist to license out their work for free. You would still need a contract in either case.

@ Pixelblink: If he hosts a site where people can send in images, but asks for money for an ad how is that stealing? The people post everything out of their own free will and by sending him the images wouldn't they already be consenting? Not like anyone's charging people to actually view the site. So by simply posting an apartment on the tower you automatically deserve the revenue generated from ads you didn't create for a product you don't actually have anything to do with?
Well I guess you could argue that without the free apartments the paid advertising ones wouldn't have a leg to stand on but then again if he doesn't actually get one ad then he'd still host it right?
Aah my head hurts.
Sorry for the long post but just needed to say how I feel.

At the moment I'm only paying for the site and don't gain 1 cent.
I think it's more you who don't understand...
There's nothing illegal AT ALL! Since I don't "hire" any artists I don't have to pay them. Any participation on this project is the people's own choice. I just provide kind of a big advertising space. And people can put their images and ads on it. It's free for noncommercial use - and it is not for commercial use. I don't see any even only nearly illegal point here.
If you want so, it's antoher form of the milliondollarhomepage or any other site selling advertising space out there.
And if the site really should get famous, then an eye-catching apartment - be it free or paid - would be good for its creater since it may attract the interest of people and hence get new visitors on your own linked website.
But I don't want to convince everybody. It should be - and of course is and always will be - everyone's own choice to take place or not.
My offer with people cooperating as freelance pixel artists still stands.

Well the idea is allraedy out there but it looks okay, ill try it.
So is the left side for free pixelers and the right for the people who want to advertise?
|
Posted By: jonnyyy

Right, but people who want to advertise (commercially) are also allowed to move into an apartment if they want to and have the skills to create/can provide a proper one.

since the artirts are alowed to do a animation, inside of the apartamente, you should make a rule, of the amount of frames that the animation need to have, because, imagine many apartaments with different number of frames that would me a mess, because the would not be synchronized. Make that they need to make a loop too.

Since every apartment's "inside" is a single page it's not that important, I think.

In mr wong soup, there are many apartaments that sucks, some that dont fit at all with the others apartaments and some that are not pixel art, hw you will make to that this don't happen in your tower??
|
Posted By: jonnyyy
Date Posted: 12 December 2007 at 1:31am
An apartment - be it commercial or not - that really 'sucks' and doesn't comply with the rules/terms (which say that all has to fit and look good together and everyone has to stay in his/her own space) will be rejected and therefore won't go online. I mean it's obvious that some pixel artists are quite professional and are able to create more good-looking than others (maybe people who are new to this) and this is also not the point. Not every apartment can be the greatest. But any apartment has to achieve a certain level to be accepted for TOWER 999.
But at the moment I'm still waiting for the first resident! Although there are quite some downloads nobody has sent me a finished apartment yet... gogogo! ;)

You could make a rule, like this.
if a person choose a apartament 205, another person can't choose the apartament 204 or 206 until the guy finish the apartament 205. If someone choose 301, we will have to wait until this guy finish this art to get 300 or 302. If 404 is completed, and someone want to make 405, the users will have to wait to the apartament 405 to be completed to make 406.
With this, will be easier to make, a tower with apartaments that fit with the others, since or nobody has made a apartament near, or someone has made and he need to make your apartament fit with the others.
And even with this rule will be many apartaments to choose since there are 999.
This will make your like easier other, than looking for each apartament that too see what apatament don't fit. You still will have too look for apartaments that dont fit, but this will become a easier work.
And, yes i know that apartament 1, 2 and 3 are reserved, but those apartaments can be a exception.

You're right, this would be an option. I will think about it but at the moment I just think, that it's nor really neccessary...
I mean it's already a rule to stay in your own space and not to edit the transparent areas of a template... so if everybody just sticks to this rule there will be no problem. I think even if you stick to it you still have enough freedom to realise your ideas! And either way there will be a point of time where apartments that don't stick to this rule will become a problem because they reach into somebody else's apartment...
