With Orig. Photo in BG. | Only Pixel Art.

Ok, this is my first portrait. It's of a good friend of mine. I am worried about one thing.

1: I'm not sure if I cheated on it or not. I don't even know what I mean by that, but you should get an idea when you soom in.

The hair will probably be my most challenge, since the mouth and nose I quicked through pretty nicely, and the eyes don't have much detail because of the shadow.

Tear it appart. Not litteraly.

Ryan, do you just not like to read topics?

"Ok, this is my first portrait. It's of a good friend of mine." That is quoting Zoomrix.

As for the portrait, it looks great so far. Can't wait to see it finished.

I need to know if I cheated or not? All I did was basically take pieces (blocks, you can even say pixels) from the original image and just plopped them onto my version. I want to know if that's the right way to do it.

Thanks for the comments

I don't think there is a, right way. No one is going to sue you for doing it that way. It is more fun to try and do it all by yourself, not saying you didn't do this, but it all just depends on how you work.

Not much to tear apart. In my mind, this is basically just like using tracing paper in traditional art. Using your reference as a reference rather than an outline and palette.

I mean, I probably couldn't do that well, because all I've got is style. I'd suggest going back to the beginning and re-lining your lines without the ref being the background. This'll give you more opportunity to learn what to do and not to do when it comes to lines, like smoothness and such. Also, pick your own palette from either your brain or an unrelated photo.

I mean, if you just want a nice looking pixel picture at the end, then fine, you're doing well. If you want something that reflects you or your bud here, then you gotta deviate from the picture itself a lot more.

And she's pretty :P

@Garage Inc: I know but what I meant is, is it one of the right ways :P

@Sabatour: I have been pixeling for a while now but haven't had much useful practice. I will take your suggestion but with a different piece a later. I hate leaving things undone and seeing them lying around. Once I finish this and relax (do some collaborations) I'll start a new portrait the way you said. I'll try to pick a pallete from my brain

And yeah, she is pretty, that's one of the best picks of her, she hot as well. It's almost as if she cannot look bad in a picture, always a good shot.

I'd say as long as you use MSPaint there is no possible way you can cheat, because none of the tools you can use would be cheating. If you used tools outside the reach of MSPaint, it is possible you cheated. That's my opinion.

Here's an important question. Do you want it to be a piece of art, or a copy of the photograph? Because you obviously already have the photograph, wouldn't it be nicer with something a bit different? Something of your style?

To prevent making a copy, do the lineart without tracing the picture. And don't pick the colors out of the photo, try to make your own palette (perhaps as similar as possible). It sounds hard and awfully boring, but it will result in something we all can see you made on your own, and your friend would probably appretiate something different than a copy more

I've always been told that using the colors or bits of the original image is cheating so.. if you've done that, you've cheated.

I've cheated a lot :D

But at least I admit it, and that's a lot more than most rippers and step-by-step-tutorial-followers do  I hate it when I find 10 houses looking the exact same except for the color choices (and many times not even that) when only one of them mentions the tutorial. Luckily no tutorials teach you how to create masterpieces, so they won't get far unless learning something along the process anyway.. :P

Erm, I talk too much

How's it going, Zoomrix? Three days has passed, and no update ^^

This is true, but personally, I always feel better about a peice if it came 100% from me, no tracing, etc.
