Does my sprite has to be similar to original - I mean can it be in comic style for example?

I went with one of the most singularly annoying paintings I've ever seen, Munch's Screamer.  I just think the idea of an enemy that looks like the freaky sectoid/alien thing he painted would be great.  Anyway, here's the current version I have, at 63x100x10 colors (including transparency):

The Muncher screams at you!

Not sure if I'll have time to work on it more or not so I'm posting it now.

Hey Prog that's sweet. :)
I didn't think your reference looked right, i don't think it's the original, i believe http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/%7Ecema/courses/CSE3325/images/lect1/munchScream.jpg - this is though.
I've looked at your sprite so much now it's starting to really freak me out. Perfect. :P

Munch did a few versions of the painting.  You can find the two most seen here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scream

If you go to the gallery you'll see the one I used, although the image is brighter (the one that was stolen in 2004).  I chose the reference image because it seemed like a better photo :).  I'm glad it scared you, I wasn't sure if it looked freaky enough or not...but considering the source, I guess I was wrong! :D

I would love to see Mr. Clock going through a surrealistic world. Just think of the environment and gameplay possibilities. :F

Prog that's an excellent rendition of the scream. If my art knowledge serves correctly though, it'd be interesting to note that it isn't necessarily the character that is screaming but that this was an experience he had. The two people in the picture were his friends and for some reason he had dropped behind. Suddenly the sky turned a blood-curdling red, as if the sky, nature itself, had screamed out. He covered his ears to block out the scream of nature. :)

nuts. i started a campbell's soup can before 6dof posted his. oh well. I have a new idea in the works, but here's what i had so far:

it was going to be a sentry gun enemy ):

and i think it uses the same number of colors as 6dof's

Guys, i shouldn't worry about doing the same idea as someone else, since you're going to give it your own concept and stylings. If anything it'd be really interesting.

oh, I'm not :D

I actually found something even more interesting, in my opinion.
but it's not even presentable yet, so you'll see it later.

yeah, i have an idea that i like better now, no need to worry about me, larwick :o

although having like 5 campbell's soup can entries would be in line with the whole mass-reproduction pop art thing that warhol was all about

This is my entry: the most diabolical monster...the ANDY WARHOL CAMBELLE SOUP CAN. frightened no?

Hilarious!

DJD - From what I read, I thought Scream was supposed to be Munch's way of expressing the buildup of anxiety in today's world, but I'm by no means an expert on the subject -- I just know I always hated the painting and it was the very first thing that came to mind for this challenge so I went with it :D.

Well...Here is my final work. Photobucket does not upload this ammount of frames in an animated GIF and I did not want to open an account an another page that I will never use;so sorry for the big sprite sheet!
Any final comments of critiques before I submit it?

wow, that looks really good man.
I have a few questions for you since i am interested making animated gifs

I use photoshop to create the graphics but what free easy program can i use to put in teh frames and make the animated gif.  Keep in mind i want to make very long gifs that can take up to 1000 frames.  Mostly with stick figures though and very little colour.

Date Posted: 28 February 2008 at 6:48pm
Larwick, I look forward to seeing that background finished =)

6dof, that is an awesome animation, instead of uploading to photobucket, why don't you upload straight from your computer?
P.S. Photobucket let me load a 40+ frame animation, I don't see how it's not letting yours load up.
