Well we first need to decide on how we're going to do the graphics and
the interface for the game. I'm working on the game right now as we
speak. I've done a simple titlescreen, a nd started a menu, and am
finishing up 1 player vs 2 player. After that I'll just tidy it up a
bit and then post it.
So maybe we can decide on a theme for the graphics. I was thinking of a
classroom/chalkboard, or maybe the game can be played in the sand on a
beach and the letters can sorta' just be carved in. Let's come up with
multiple themes and decide on the best one. Who knows, we may be able
to use more than one theme. :D

In my area the playgrounds have life size tic tac toe things for the kids to play with. Its connected to the playset, I dunno if you have ever seen anything like that.. You could also do something like a grafitte (sp) with a brick background. Or even a hopscotch type thing. I dunno its late for me here and I am getting tired XD

Yeah I've seen em'. So far I think the school/chalkboard theme is the
best. If any one could offer more suggestions for themes cause we may
be able to use more than one.

Could there be animations? Say like the X could just be drawn on
with chalk, but the O could be like an animation of a
Auto-Spitball-shooter and it makes an O out of spitballs.

Ok, even better.

Exactly what I was thinking, except the spitball part lol, and then
when a new game is starting an eraser can pop up and erase the last
game or something yeah. Animations would be great though. All I would
need animation wise is for when you click on a spot to become an x or
o, and have a piece of chalk draw the x/o.
Music and sounds are really optional, but if we can get em' it'd be alot better.

read the newest update up top to see what's new. I'll try to update the
game every now and then. You guys better get cracking cause I'm already
starting to feel like this colab is dead and no one just wants to work
on games. :(

Ok I've collected 5 music files and also 3 or 4 (can't remember ) of sounds.
The sounds are mostly fitted to when you either win or lose.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4274H7HF - ZIP
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=423OXWX3 - RAR
(I apologize if I mixed up the ZIP or RAR files)
And a suggestion: I think you were already thinking of this, but just in case - you should have a "Play Again" button because every time the game ends you have to go back to the menu and start again that way.

Yeah already going to add one. It's still in it's beta stages. It's
nearing completion though. I just need a score board, and such. Thanks
for the music btw, I'll check it out right now. Sorry for being away
for a while. I was on vacation for the last few days.
EDIT: The success music is
great. Although the rest don't really match the tone of the game and
are more fit for some sort of adventure/rpg title. I could save them
though incase of future use on a future game colab. I do plan on doing
more in the future. I want to get more contributors in on these cause
I've only seen a few certain members continue to post in this
topic.
Music 2 sounds like something from DonkeyKong Country... I couldn't use
music from another game. The music needs to be just simple and cheerful
to match this small game.

Hrmmm, 2 weeks have gone by, and I'm starting to lose interest in this
colab. Not much people willing to participate or help out. I may just
scrap it for a while.
I might try to think of a better colab or form some kinda' team...
I don't really think game colabs are actually that fit for the colab forum.
I tried to organize this as well as I could. It didn't go as great as I hoped, but it wasn't too bad either.
Maybe I should just really get started kicking off the graphics. I've
started on the logo. I didn't like my chalkboard I Made so I'm trying
to redo it.

Good eye, and no I'm not the programmer but I did get his permission. I
mainly used it for help with the computer, and to get the main idea.
I'm currently changing up the coding with help from my friend, Luke.
We're going to work together to make it a better engine. Tile-based
also. There's a few things I didn't like about the source. Example it leading to the main menu like mine currently does. I'm
fixing that right now. It'll hopefully be a better version in the end,
with prettier graphics also.
The computer level right now is very good. Not too easy or hard. Alot
of the sources that I tried out, some of the computers were impossible
to win against. I'm thinking about maybe making a extra tutorial screen
or something also where you could learn moves, or adding a "pig pen
game". Have you ever played pigpen on paper? It's that game where you
try to connect the the dots to form a box. You take turns connecting
dots, the person who completes the box writes their name inside and so
fourth. The person with the most complete boxes in the end wins. This
game would be a bit harder to program though. Maybe I could see if I
could get my friend Luke to register. He's not so in to pixelart any
more though.

Okay, so I was thinking instead of your generic X's and O's you could have little characters like this guy in there.

You could make other games with these images in them and expand the menu for other simple games like pig pen or whatever (hangman?)
What do you think?

An interesting idea. Maybe the players could choose/make their own
character, then use it as an alternate to the standard x's and o's.
They could be a selection of normal people, or monsters like you just
posted. For pigpen all I was thinking was just making it actually look
like a farm, and each time you closed a pen a pig appeared with your
first and last initials branded on it in red. The other player could be
blue.
PigPen could also be 1 - 4 player.
I'm thinking about maybe even using multiple themes. This wouldn't be
too hard to manage for. I might even make it so you can use the key
board to play as an alternative instead of the mouse. Still got tons of
ideas running through.
PigPen would be hard to construct but would definitely be a fun addition.
I think I'm going to get cracking on the logo and the menu. Then the pre-loader I guess.
So far I like the playground idea, the classroom, and your's with the characters.

an example of the playground theme. Only if we pulled it off, it
wouldn't be so ugly colored. lol. The blocks could spin to reveal the x
or o. A very cool idea.

Nice theme ides but let me say one thing. Tic tac toe can never be won by the player unless you impliment a messup function into the programming. Hey but make the game. I personally dispise tic tac toe for it's obveous lack of stratigy...You either mess up or you tie. A properly programmed computer DOESN"T mess up thats my 2 cents..

The computer has to mess up otherwise it'd be impossible to win. This
computer is one of the smartest I have found, if you use the same
strategy every time it won't always make the same move so you can win
with the same strategy 10 times in a row, making the computer much less
predictable. That is why I chose to use this engine for the computer.
I have gotten the keyboard menu to work thanks to my friend, Luke. We
may fix up the Computer a bit. I'll implement it in to the game very
soon.
Here are things I plan to add to TicTacToe:
1. Make it so you don't have to go back to the menu everytime you win.
2. Make it so X and O take turns going first. (this applies to the computer and 2 player as both did not include this)
3. Score, (amount of times won) as soon as a player reaches 10, music will play and it'll announce the winner
As for PigPen, I'm thinking about adding this as well. I kinda want to
get the game looking pretty in pixels before though and finishing up
TicTacToe.

GOOD NEWS!!!
my friend has just released a beta for PigPen. All is
going well. WE'LL NEED GRAPHICS SOON GUYS SO STAY TUNED! The pigpen
beta can be found here:
http://www.vgreality.com/alphaex/g_pigpen_beta.htm
It's only 2 player at the moment, but he's
working on a Computer. I'm currently thinking about dropping TicTacToe,
not too fun anyways, like one of the members mentioned earlier. This
engine uses tiles like all of his games on his site currently.
If I do decide to bring back TicTacToe, it won't really be TicTacToe,
but more along the lines of connect 4, because I find it to be much
more fun.

My friend is already half-finished with it. He's an actionscript genius... seriously...
I've started on the logo and small things like backgrounds. I'll be
sure to post them here when I'm done. One thing we need right now is a
pig.... and I'm not too good with animals. Could anybody draw us a
small pig? We won't be taking just about anything either. The graphics
do have to be quality here. I mean c'mon, ITS A GAME!

It's a sideview of the pig. Normal 2d, not isometric. As for the size,
just keep it kinda' small. Not so small that it's hard to see or
determine what it is and put detail in to it.
