Has anyone played the game Snax 'n Jackson on MAME?

Its a really weird/funny game where you are a clown called jackson le bouef or something, you have to bounce your nose off your face and grab food.

Worth checking out

Reo,

I knew there would be some evil looking clowns in this challenge...lol

That looks great!  Nice job on the expression.  I'd have to see how it would look, but maybe some dithering on the shirt.  I could be wrong on that though.

Hah, reo, I love the nose being a real one but red

EDIT:
Finished?

I did a quick MSpaint sketch yesterday.

Thoughts?  The clown will be frowning while riding the unicycle, and the crowd will be in the brown lines in the corner.  I love this palette, I've never worked with it before.  It's far from done but I have ideas.  I had to  spend most of my time AAing thet yellow, which proves to be hard.  The area inside the yellow lines will be light green and yellow dithered, I think, maybe some brown too.  Suggestions?

WIP

Still pretty weak, but i am starting to get better.  pre-planning is so important, next time i will think a load more about the scene before i start.

I usually sketch it first which speeds things up. also I did ten minuites this morning at 3am (so mabye last night :D) and then did the other ten - twenty minuites when i got in from school, the break helps to stop my getting lazy.
I'm not continuing without some helpful advice now though.

i'd rather use stronger shades of colors photo, as it really looks weak considering its meant to be a tough, scary situation.

what do you mean by stronger shades?

Posted By: Jaeden
Date Posted: 03 February 2009 at 12:51pm

probably referring to higher contrasts, making the shadows darker to make the face more menacing... (parden my spelling)

Posted By: Metaru
Date Posted: 03 February 2009 at 1:35pm
exactly. darker tones, and gigher contrast. check what reo did for his clown.

Going to totally redo the head, cos it looks stupid

is this better or have i got the wrong idea?

Posted By: Jaeden
Date Posted: 03 February 2009 at 9:18pm
Its better but now you need more antialiasing around the creaslines in his forhead and perhaphs darker linework around the edges of the mouth.

Also I assume your not done, but some pink (sort of pink what ever color that is) AA around the teeths edges would be a plus as well.

WIP

can anyone offer any advice on how to improve this?
i would like to improve the transitions between the gradients to make the change in tone smoother.
I am quite happy with it being my first attempt though.

Posted By: dpixel

JoPix,

Not bad at all for your first attempt.  I find this palette hard to work with, but I'm new at this too.  I like the juggling idea you have there.

I could suggest maybe a shadow on the ground since the light seems to be coming from the right.  Maybe more contrast shading on his head.  Ears?  Hair?  Think silly...funny.  Just some ideas.  Looks good though.

or do you reckon I should just spend time and effort making a background and stuff cause it looks a bit tacky with wierd dithering other the top?

~never mind, I've gone for the effort...~

Right now you have frowning eyebrows. Before you had eyebrows like this

^
which makes him more evil than angry. I guess thats a problem.
Also, give him a smile. Even the paint does not make him smile. Smile and some evil eyes together are very evil :)

I'd say more shadows around the eyes, under the brow and from the hat. also make the mouth more of a lear.

Maybe closing his eyes a little... more in the middle

And marking the lines below his nose. The ones that connect mouth and nose.

Here's mine so far. Haven't joined in on the fun for far too long. I'm trying to stay away from yellow and green:

EDIT: Damn, just thought that I need to use the entire pallete.
I'm not gonna use them a whole lot though

EDIT 2:
Here's an update with all colours.

Okay so uh... I went to a blank canvas with the colors and went to work.
Completely forgetting I was supposed to do a clown...
So many changes were made among a perspective fix and a few other things.
The clown was like the last thing I did, so I don't know if I should submit it.

@Souly: that scene is fantastic. Tough the clown takes away a bit, it's awesome overall. That tree is one of your best works.

@skeddles: Considering techniques it's great as expected from you, but the proportions are a bit dissonant.

My piece is not improving the way I planned so I just quit this challenge, and post my last WIP here:
