There was an anime happening near my home last saturday. So I thought I'd make a cosplayer with pink hair and all... But then I couldn't make any that looked good. One of the sketches looked really old so I thought I'd make a sketch of an old lady with pink/magenta hair/wig and pink/magenta lips. What do you think? Should keep working on this or make traditional cosplayer?  |

I grow these every year. The fragrance is amazing. I've got 28 of these colors so far. This is still a work in progress. Probably adding 1 set of leaves.

I'm going to try and enter this. Here is my WIP so far.

I did have some time to work on this afterall. I worked on the body first, and I've just now gotten to work on the head. I'm not sure if I like the face yet, but his vapid, happy expression is growing on me so far. I think he needs bucked teeth. Background is still bland until I can think of something interesting.
 Edit: And a bit more work on the face, now featuring bucked teeth!
 And a bit more work to the face and belly.

39 colors... way too many for such a simple image. try using more contrast between colors and better shadows. save the dithering for rough surfaces and when there is a specific limitation on the color count of your palette. the some looks ackward too(looks as it was pulled to the side due the shading), same as the cigarette. the way he grabs it its completely ridiculous. and the proportion of the face features should be slighty increased to match the skull's size. and don't forget to use a reference for better results. ------------- I ate leel's babies |

Metaru I have a couple questions. If 39 colors is to much, what should I shoot for? When you say "the some" I have no idea what your talking about? the nose. as for the amount of colors, you should use less colors with more contrast between them. a better color ramp will mean a huge improvement in your understanding of shading, depth, and colors in general.  ------------- I ate leel's babies |

In future, if you ever wonder about proportions, use this trick: go look at yourself in the mirror and hold a ruler or stick out at arm's length, mark one part's measurement with your thumb, then (still at arm's length - that's important, since you're actually measuring angular size, not linear, so you have to keep the ruler a constant distance from your eye!) move it to another part and compare. If you do that with your head and shoulders, you'll find that you're about three heads wide across the shoulders - that is, your left and right shoulder are each about as wide as your head, and then your head is in the middle. This guy looks like he's more like 5 head-widths across the shoulders, which makes him rather pin-headed indeed. if you don't want to change it, I'd exaggerate it even more somehow... make him a bit more cone-headed or something. Make it a caricature and pretend you did it on purpose all along. That's a classic artist's trick. ;) |

I agree with alex 100% and so the odds are against you. Another thing anybody saying that its good have forgotten to tell why they think its good, but none have told you other than alex why its worse than there initial response.
Firstly the difference in hue(colour), brightness and saturation is very minimal, resulting in a lack in contrast and something that looks like a straight colour ramp. http://rjanes.co.uk/tutorials/introduction_to_pixel_art.php Take a good look at this its very good.(I will admit I found this earlier today, but had this knowledge and more from other colour theory discussions that I have read). I won't go on about your understanding of light. But look into it ;) as its something your not particularly good at. Remember: Line-art/shape then volume and then detail. ------------- |

Ok, I tried my best to change it to reflect your comments.

Edit: I also wanted to say that I never disagreed with Alex that the the proportions where wrong, just that I needed to change it because it look the way I wanted.
