This is Valiant Vincent, but he's not quite satisfied with his shading and he'd love to get creative suggestions and criticism from other pixelartists since the guy that created Vincent is currently braindead or something.

I'd throw in another highlight color to break up the larger highlight areas, but then again I ruin a lot of my pieces that way.

Try making the highlight in top conform to the shape of the mask a little more, add very slight flanges on the sides. If you overdo it then it'll make the sides look too round. As is you could get a good bulgy cartoon look in there if you pull it off right.

when I saw this topic's title I though It will be about that pigeon. post pigeon, like in movie Valiant...but this is also nice and is simple. And how Evilagram said, try to add some another lightsource. :)

Yes it is him, but I'll change both colours, the shape of his head, the cape, the "mask" and add other cool details to him. I just couldn't resist, he's too damn cute.

Me and Val struggled to get his costume glossy without adding any colours to it, and this is what we came up with.
And yeah, we're changing the colour palette since he's looking like a http://www.Nitrome.com - Nitrome creation, so if ya got any suggestions about what colours it should be in please tell me abot your thoughts!

Thanks!

looks much better, much better defintion. Try smoothing out the sharp parts of the highlights.

Since someone else backed me up, I'm going to suggest throwing in a brighter highlight color for specular highlights in the larger regions.

Thanks

The sharp highlight edges makes his costume get the glossy kinda glossy look I'm after, so I'll leave that?
And another colour.. what colour should that be, bright purple or white?

As a personal rule of thumb I shy away from pure white or pure black.

I have some reflex when I'm stuck at things like these, I start dithering. And almost always overdo it.

Stick with the previous glossy style?

I kinda likes it without the dithering. but it looks good like that to. i think you should finish both and post them, together. very good work. and i agree that pure black dosent look the best.

Argh, I'm torn. I love the cel-shaded look, but I love the dithered look too. Really nice dithering by the way.

I'm leaning on the dithered look though.

If you're animating this then I'd suggest the cel-shaded style. It works a bit better with animation than dithering because it's a lot easier to make it look smooth. Although personally I think both look good! :D

Yeh, that's the guy off 'headcase' from Nitrome, now with bombermanish eyes =), without the dither his head looks glossy because of the straight line as a shadow, try as with the stomach and shade to try and suggest a shape.
I like the dithered more, but the cell shaded has a nice simplistic feel, Also I very much reccommend changing the feet, I think you could even cut off the green parts so he just has short stubby legs, then colour a portion of those legs green to match the gloves.
and thats just about my 2cents worth. =)

I think the dithered guy looks odd because of not having enough visible shading on his head. I tried to fix it by doing just that, and I'll post it as fast it is fairly decent.

Thanks again guys for staying committed!
