IMO this is my kind of challenge - few restrictions but still restrictive enough to be called a 'challenge'. I just started something really good and JPG'd it... kinda too frustrated to attempt again right now, but might try again later.

Can it be a snowglobe? :P
|
Posted By: Argyle
Date Posted: 04 May 2009 at 8:10pm
The possibilities are endless so long as you stay within the simple guidelines
- it has to be within the shape template (nothing outside of the circle) - it must be a scene of some sort. A snowglobe can be a scene, sphere perspective is a scene. That all works. It's really subjective.

For the sake of nostalgia I'm voting for that.

I just realized this isn't a scene, so I'm not sure if i can submit the finished piece in the challenge..

Make it look like it's entering the atmosphere, with heat and friction and such, and it could be a scene.
------------- I can do a lot of things, I just never bother to do most of them.

It's a good idea but it would be very difficult to do and not go out of the template, but i'll try it anyway. Edit: Here's an update anyways

I am back from my vacation :D
And immediately I was asked to look at this. And Stratto, I really like your entry, but I am afraid that when approving it there might be more people doing the same kind of stuff but not with that amount of quality.
So, there is two choises for you: Finishing it as you had in mind, without submitting it to the challenge
Changing it in that way that I can cal it a scene. Maybe add some clouds on top of it, or shrink the moon (you could cut off a part. Or drag the moon upwards to the right, so that the full moon is not in the canvas, and there is room for other stuff to be visible)

Are we allowed only one entry or can I do more? I have a few ideas but I'm not sure which one to choose.

You can enter as many times as you want.

Here's a WIP. When thinking of a scene this seemed like a good idea. Let's see if I can make it better yet. Obviously there's still a bit of scenery missing.

Three scene concepts I'm considering. All in very rough sketch stages, obviously, while I consider which ones to attempt and to see if it leads me to thinking of any other new ideas. I'm strongly considering making an animation of these for the fun of animating frames distorted in a fisheye style. Will probably make the skateboarder a more stylized monster when I have time to do more beyond sketching while on break at the office.

A Discworld! I wish you luck with it. I'd place the turtle lower so you can fit there elephants and a disc. Good luck again.

I sketched a skateboard scene too, but as I can see it's a quite different pose... dunno if I should change subject

I'd go for it. That's what a challenge is all about. Even if it's the same subject, no two pixel art peices will be the same. I say: "More skateboards"

Damn, I think I might have to quit, again. Can only be on the computer about one hour a day and its not enough to finish my entry, since I do other stuff on the comp too, not just pixelling. I guess I ll finish it and submit it after the challenge then.
Not that anyone cares :P

I thought my ears were burning. ^_^
Trees can be a nightmare and may easily push you past the deadline. You're better off throwing a highway and an urban landscape in the background and leaving the viewer with a horrible feeling in the pit of their belly that bambi is going to be road kill, or some such. ;)
You may find helpful work on PJ by other artists - search for bushes etc, but also look at trees in Big Brother's ORC piece, and several by Fool.
Question: If I upload and submit a weekly challenge and then get critique to improve it post-challenge, do I upload it again separately or replace the existing upload?

Ah, about the circle - how far from perfect is it? Using a slightly smaller circle inside it, I'm wondering whether the internal shape would need to be corrected differently, or some such.

2 days left and I just started, my idea is a Chinese hand painted plate kinda thing, not sure what the scene will be. thinking mountains, temples, clouds, river, peacocks and all the traditional imagery with a very pastille palette, lots of ideas I just hope I can find time.
I know it's not anything yet just posting to ask will it be allowed? as it will be an object with a scene on it.

|
Posted By: darchangel
Date Posted: 09 May 2009 at 8:45am
I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed, you are using the template and will include a scene

So this has been about 2 hours work (yes I'm slow) I think I'll need at least that time again to finish it to standard which I'm not sure i'll find before the deadline. Anyway it's just basically layed out - any crit as yet?

@Jal:
wow awesome Gas would be proud.
Although some problems at the moment:
the fading off into the distance seems a bit jerky. The colours don't seem to fade off smoothly, especially around the 7th (?) frame (sorry, I haven't actually checked) and near the end where he still remains relatively dark against the lighter background.
The fading off movement could do with some work as well, towards the end the squid appears to go a bit fast. As he's a lot further away, he should take longer to move off the screen. Right now he sort of zooms off.
Perhaps you should ease off the dithering on the metal a bit, especially near the bottom, as I think it is looking a bit flat...
Some of the AA within the inner circle could be improved, particularly on the top left and right, where things look a bit linear rather than circular.

Heya, I only just joined the forum, but I found this place very interesting. ^^
I rarely do pixel art, normally I just sprite, so I'd like to know what you guys think of my first piece. http://www.pixeljoint.com/files/icons/full/entry__r1866220251.gif - http://www.pixeljoint.com/files/icons/full/entry__r1866220251.gif

\m/ HOKUSAI! Thanks for liking it those who did.
Another WIP; So I started the cliffs and cliff paths (still scribbles) and they kinda fall outta the whole oriental style with the rest of it, should I continue to make the cliffs like this or has someone got a good ref pic of oriental style cliffs and paths I could try, google images isn't helping me much.
The clouds I'll go back to and do last, Have I made anything worse? The waves and temple aren't finished but they are finished to a point that I could submit if I run outta time. Any crits and suggestions? like the temple should have stairs etc?

Whoops! I guess I missed the competition! Or did I? Is there a chance of submitting this anyway? If not, tough luck. This is my very first image to appear on the Pixel Joint boards - as you can see I'm not too good at this whole drawing / pixel art thing. I gave it a shot anyway. So here it goes:
I drew this up using Colors for Nintendo DS and finished it in Graphics Gale on the PC. Doesn't come close to what I've seen around here, but that's my entry. Well, not an entry since I'm late.
|
Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 11 May 2009 at 10:21pm
The problem with your entry is a common mistake made by those new to pixelart. The thing is that its not pixelart, this is drawing with the mouse/oekaki. Careful pixel placement is key. See tutorial section or resource section.

Yea, I thought it falls more into a drawing category, but I thought it came out kind of cool so I posted it anyway. I did alot of pixel by pixel editing as well, plus the clouds weren't there when I drew it. I promise to do better next time around. Hehe.
