Are we allowed to use the classic Tarot suites, I personally find them cooler

They're

Page - Knight - Queen - King
of
Cups - Sticks - Pentacles - Swords

You should give it a suit identity somehow.  Is he a Spade or a Club?  How?

And now for something completely different...

This is how far I am on mine so far.. I may change the colors but for now I am taking a break.. I ended up adding the black outline to the lighter parts to help it stand out more.. Not sure how I feel about the shading.. It is quite a challenge to stick to just the 11 colors.. Hopefully it hasn't turned out too bad.. It should be obvious what he is but if not the King of Spades.. I may add some white hairs but maybe he is just a young king.. :P

EDIT - took away the extra color.. Thanks for the heads up Jalonso :)

Wonderful stuff jal, the idea of doing the hair like that is great!
However, there is hardly any differences between the 3 in a group. You could make it much and much more obvious who who is, I can now hardly see.
Also, the 'hair tentacles' donot work as well everywhere, probably due their colors. Especially on the spades I find the light blue too bright.
I think that the last one, the queen of diamonds is the best one so far.

To me, none of the entries so far scream "sprite." Part of my judging will be based on which one I can imagine being a fully developed animated game character. Usually this means you shouldn't use time consuming shading techniques (like dithering) or choose an impractically large canvas size.

I'd prefer to see a solidly designed game character that fully answers the theme of playing cards.

I might give this one a go if I get the time. Best of luck everyone!

susuwaris, the challenge is for a sprite, so be sure to have it work on a "neutral" (unknown) background.
My own wip:

I went for a King of Diamonds, though I'll try to make it more visible.

Here's my WIP.  There's still 1 too many colors...that's an easy fix tho.  Still needs proper shading on the dress.

Queen of Diamonds

yrizoud:  That looks awesome

Very good Jal!

Posted By: iSTVAN
Date Posted: 12 May 2009 at 11:46pm
That's more like it, yrizoud. It at least looks like a game sprite. I would perhaps rethink the heavy use of black. Maybe a darker shade in between would work to ease it into the black. I find your skin tones a little too yellow too. Also, he might benefit from some sort of darker outline to provide a buffer zone between the light coat and the background (as you've said, he's got to work against any neutral background). The little details like the hair and belt are nice, but maybe avoiding using dithering on the clothing. This would be a bitch to animate!

David, King of Spades :V
I'll *try* to do a simple walk animation, can anyone see any problems with it as is?

Posted By: jiipm
Date Posted: 13 May 2009 at 1:43am
@Jeremy:Id like darker shadows to the yellow/golden clothes. Especially the pants, they kinda 'stand out' yet they are kinda behind the cape. But it´s looking good. Has many good details.

Here is my work, King of Hearts:

I might animate it, but I dont know if I´ll upload the animated version to the challenge. btw, Jeremy. IMO My work and your WIP could be from the same game. (lets do a game??? ;D)Sorry if my work sucks.

Posted By: jeremy
Date Posted: 13 May 2009 at 2:11am
Hah, I'd not have the patience (or experience or work ethic) to make a game :D

Ugh. Those yellow pants were meant to go over the cloak thing, It's sort of half and half. I'll make the cloak go over pants now :D

For your animation.... maybe something subtle like beating of the heart and lip-licking

The challenge is not to make a card but a sprite, k. Transparent BG is required too, get giffy from FAQ page or use www.iaza.com

@Chase, your entry is not a sprite. Sprites are full body game assets, you have more of a portrait going on there.

You have a point, iStvan

I simplified the shading much and removed the dithering.

Old: New:

Any better? :D

@ Jalonso
I like your WIP much! I'd differentiate the queen from the other two by making the eyes a little more... uh... foxy? :P just a few more pixels in the upper eyelids would give her some "makeup" and make it look more female - so you'd have king with beard, queen with girly eyes, and the jacks wouldn't need much else? Just a thought :)

Bubu:  I like the new one better except for the vail.  I liked it longer, but that's just me.  She seems more readable and standing up straighter plus a bit more cute.  :-)

Took me a while to come up with a decent template

I might have to animate it now

What I have so far (will be jack of heart) (No transparency yet, I work in MS Paint so I'll only add transparency at the very end)

susuwataris The image itself is really cool, but I think its head is a little too big for it to be a practical *sprite*. The style is really nice though, and if you work on the head you should still keep that one somewhere on your computer, don't let it go waste.

darchangel You might want to consider a more dynamic pose than just plain ol' "facing forward with arms on the side"

EDIT: Oh crap, got owned by dimentions, should've read more carefully. Oh well, I guess I'll finish it anyways, even if I can't submit it

A lot of the entries in this topic don't seem to have enough clearly definable shades/colours, so to compensate you're trying to add detail in with dithering. The simplest sprites are the best sprites, guys!

Uhm I might be mistaken... but it seems to me that it's a little over the max canvas size?
Canvas Size - Maximum 70 (width) x 100 (height).

Yours seems to be 192x128? Wouldn't want it to be rejected due to the size :(

Edit: ok you noticed it yourself, d'oh. :P

Queen of Spades

I don't really do sprites so I could do with opinions from the sprite experts ;D I tried to keep the shading simple and un-dithered this time :)

Yeah, I've seen that it's oversized. I'll finish it but dunno if I'll shrink it, might just keep it like that and not submit it

Any tip on making my rendering look better?, somehow, I'm not entirely satisfied...

Bubu: Really good sprite, but I think her eyes looked better in earlier versions

Or at least I thought "Ace" was allowed...

Oh and what do you know it has to be a sprite.

That's looking really nice, Bubu. I always love it when blue is used to shade the shadows of a white tone. If you can afford the extra colours it might be nice to see some more vibrancy to the hair tones to make them pop out from her skin.

Two reasons I think:
You did not follow the rules since sprites do not have copy and you have writing on yours. AND...
Your character is tiny, tiny and almost impossible to see. You have till Sunday night, do not get discouraged...get challenged.

*Your personal challenge is to get something 'IN'.

It came directly from this you said which made too much sense and is really the challenge this week:
"To me, none of the entries so far scream "sprite." Part of my judging will be based on which one I can imagine being a fully developed animated game character. Usually this means you shouldn't use time consuming shading techniques (like dithering) or choose an impractically large canvas size."

I hate anatomy and sprites but can make them if I try, which I hardly ever do cuz I hate making them.

I gave up on a walk pretty quick, decided on a random idle thing. Learnt how to avoid the onion-skin-trail things when doing a transparent animation but accidently exported clicking "merge layers" instead of "save as animation"

@ Cesque, Sprites are the (usually) moving elements in a a video game.
For example, in SMW, Mario, Luigi, Coins, Mushrooms are the sprites. This normally does not have text, especially the name of the sprite itself.
I don't think you should be mad at all. Place your sprite as a WIP thread or even here for other's feedback. There is always a way to make things better.

ps: I did not say those two things is what's wrong with it and why a Mod sent it back. I was just guessing at why it could be.

Yeah, I know about sprites. I just don't know what you mean by 'do not have copy'.

Also, out of curiosity, what pixelart techniques [dithering, antialiasing, outlines etc] would make a piece of pixelart look like a sprite?

I started a WIP progress today, didn't get very far before i realized i wouldn't finish in time and even if i did it wouldn't be allowed.

I was going for a kid king of spades as I don't like the beardy card faces. I kinda like him. The colors on it were just place holder colors, i need to fix the lines first. I may finish it one day but not in time for the challenge and i'll then get to use as many colors as i want, so just posting it here now for crits.

'copy' means any writing at all.

As iSTVAN said in an earlier comment. Sprites are normally minimally colored because they are usually animated and they tend to be more of simple color blocking with some selout here and there. The main idea is that you can easily 'read' it clearly...'read' meaning that your mind sees it clearly and defined. This does not always mean overly detailed since the brain is capable of filling in the details if you place them pixels carefully.
