Alrighty, I just had to ask this:
What is, for you, the most annoying excuse you see get posted about bad pixel art? Like, someone posts a work, someone says it's bad, then they fire back with some stupid excuse.
For me, it's this:
"I'm a sprite artist. I can't do big scenes."
Erm, people, f.y.i.: You can make a big scene out of little pieces. >.>
Alrighty, go! :D

"That's the way I pixel" + "What should I add" next to a scene with nothing in it but ground and sky.

I'm shure he'll fire all that we wrote at once when he uploads something.

I must admit that I'm not to keen when people send in manga art with weird poses and odd proportions and then say that they care about the "style" and not the anatomy.

is stupid and egotistical for artists to pretend that a shading style
that they probably used when they were just starting out is somehow
something they would never do.
Everyone starts somewhere, and
what new artists like me need is not something stating that our methods
are dumb and stupid. We need someone going "Here is what I do and how

my methods and the methods of most new pixel artists serve not as
tutorials, but as pictures I quickly scan and then forget about forever.
NOT HELPFUL KTHX.
I never see "normal" art tutorials putting
down a specific style (or any style for that manner). Why do some pixel
artists feel that they need to make fun of others in order to make a
tutorial on how to IMPROVE? This is dumb. Public service message.

At first I had some excuses when I was only in wayofthepixel haha... but now I try to do things the right way.
My valid excuse, and this helps me stay patient a lot, is "I only have been doing this since january 2009, I'm not an expert", sadly but true haha... I tell this to myself btw, when I do something wrong, it's basically cause of momentary lazyness, so I'm bound to just say "I don't feel like working further on it" or something along those lines...

Person 1: There head is titlted at 180. angle. I don't think that's possible.
Person 2: I did that deliberately.
I don't mind it in moderation but it gets a bit tiresome when its posted after every single comment someones made. Especially if that person asked people to critique O_O

That guy does make a valid point. Sure pillow shading looks weird but lots of things look weird. Does that mean they are bad? Some might be horrible but others are brilliant just the way they are. Pillow shading and all. I'm all for constructive criticism but you start name calling because someone hasn't mastered proper shading techniques that sort of crosses the line.
Anyway, I hate when people post a pixel work and then proceed to put down their own work saying they know it's horrible and bad etc. If you know you can do better than do better.
|

that man makes no valid point.
if something looks weird in art, then yeah, typically it's bad. if you don't draw eyes on your figures, they look weird, and the audience sees the work as incomplete. if you ignore your light source, then your image doesn't make sense, and it shows the hand of a novice. there's a reason only n00bs pillow shade- they haven't learned better.
so if i paint my grass orange instead of green, or draw fingers with only one joint, or draw lamp shining on a box that casts no shadow, then I suppose it's not inherently "bad", bad is just a value judgment. but it is obviously incorrect.
pillow shading isn't a style of shading. it isn't shading. it ignores a light source. "it looks weird but it's ok because sometime weird things are cool" isn't a very good reason to apply pillow shading.
