Is it restricted to "sprites", or is a scene also allowed?

I foresee a lot of creativity in this competition anyhow.

No, you are restricted to sprites.

For the challenge, please tell what to improve.

I know it is very simple, and I do think about adding more to it.

May or may not stick with this idea:

Kinda' wanna' do something more elaborate.

Nice shapes on the last 2 comments, kudos.

@angel just make that twice the size so that you have room to elaborate. The shape is wonderful.

Well, I've been working on another concept as well:

Tried (and failed) at adding tendrils to the bottom, but I'll get it!

Which do you think is better?

Good afternoon. I've a question to ask about transparency. I am using 4 shades of blue, purple and orange and 3 of green as well. I used my green pallet to create my lil pilot in the cockpit. But when I use my orange pallet as the transparency over the green I get shades of color that are not in my pallet. My question is do these other shades count as additional colors. If so I need to fix it. This is my first entry and I want it to qualify for entry. Thank you for your time. Love the site.

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 09 June 2009 at 11:04am
Yes, these are new colors.
It is best if you refrain from opacity layers (maybe just determine the colors you need to add to your palette) and then pixel as opaque colors.
ps: transparency is also counted as a color (since it is a color with a mask).

Elk, how can you possibly pixel on a pink background? I really get blind while looking at it, and it is easier to pick good colors with a neutral background!

And yes, 16 colors is the rule. And I am sure you can do that quite easily here.

Its a bit depressing to look at some of this stuff - I have so much to learn.  A request for input - any glaring issues with this piece? I want to animate the main propellor, the smoke stack and the flags once I have completed the main image. EDIT - Oh, and the ropes coming from the prop shaft and nose.

Posted By: Elk
Date Posted: 10 June 2009 at 12:59pm
Lol lollige, i always use 255 0 255 as bg that will be transparent in future XD

its just easier for me to adjust the saturation of stuff :D as it is very very unlikely to use that color in the piece itself and so the piece that is around it is centered

Posted By: Hapiel
Date Posted: 10 June 2009 at 1:02pm
Elk, you can just remove the colors and then draw over that version, changing the colors to get into perfection again?

Here's an entry idea that seems worth putting out.  (For some reason I can't get my Picassa picture to show - if I can't fix it, I'll try another photo service)  I feel it's pretty basic, but it may only need the right colours.  I'd be too unmotivated to finish if I thought this was going in the wrong direction, so feel free to comment and criticise ruthlessly - I'll even take palette suggestions.  Heck, if someone has the patience to colour it, they can have the credit - I'm way too inexperienced to do it justice anyway (even if it deserves any at all).

•Use www.tinypic.com

•So that you know the challenge is about SPACE ships not just ships.

•Use the lineden if you wish to donate linearts for coloring.

•"I'm way too inexperienced to do it justice anyway" We'll have none of that talk around here. You will try and try and try until you get the experience. If you dream it, it deserves it.

Fawful, your ship is looking great. I do think you should smooth the yellow stripe in the jaggiest areas on the bow since you have 3 yellows to easily do this.

hmmm...that didn't do much.
Maybe bring gold pipes to cover the worst areas ;)
Your ship has the general feel of a train so you could add a cow catcher just below the observation deck? It would break the boxy front a bit.

Notice the big blue exhaust pipes do not connect nicely.

I put this together over the last couple of days. C and C would be nice. It is probably rife with errors, as I've never really drawn either a spaceship or anything this size before and I don't have a great deal of experience at pixel art yet either.

Oops, sorry, Jalonso (I'll try to be less humble in the future ).  Even though I didn't get finished by the deadline, can I still work on it in this thread, and ask for advice?  (for example, should I have animated flames from the engines - seen at the stern - and does my palette need work, and does it need a starry background?)
Thanks!

I suspect the user elk has used color reduction on his submition plus some retouching to make it less noticeable. I came to this conclution after he posted a wip in the forum where his sprite had 25 colors, and because the rules said 16 colors maximum he reposted the same picture with 16, with colors somewhat similar but not the same. Then i took the wip with 25 colors into photoshop, and, to my surprise, I got the same colors from color reduction that his new sprite had.
Hence, it's ovbious he used color reduction.

Here's my proof.

version of 25 colors:

version of 25 colors reduced to 16:
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/9775/miidolo.png

version of 16 colors:
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4876/restrict3.png

I did use the report function, however it has been a week and no one has gotten back to me about the issue.

that is still allowed, he changed the colors of something that was already pixelart and the result was the same as if he'd done it by hand
It only changes the colors and not the pixel technique...
If you're reducting colors from something like a photo and then claim that its pixelart, that is not allowed but using color reduction to quickly reduce the colors of your PIXELART is allowed.

:O! that's true!! :O

reduction of color is prohibited, in all its forms...
because the color is chose for the computer and the computer did technically work repixel again, he only retouch lil imperfections of the PA

You know what - the challenge is OVER - stop nit picking - Have you SEEN Elk's work?  He/She/It is a god of pixelling - so tone it down and get over it - sheesh!

There's a reason they didn't get back to you...

As I just said it is not....
The thing that matters is the endresult and that you have  control over the piece, using color reduction to make 25 colors 16 is therefore allowed.
Plus he fixed the errors it brougth with it so i don't know what you guys are bitching about.

I am not convinced, looking at the versions in detail gives signs that it could both have been done manually or automatically.

He probably did do some automatical saturation shifting or so, and he probably did not use the same tools for reducing as you do if he did reduce.

Either way, I would not call it a problem

But:

Why don't we just ask him? That could clarify a lot more than trying to see things in an image there might not be!

If he did indeed use a color reduction tool of any form, why would you give him and specifically him a lenience? If a newbie like me posted a piece of art that someone even hinted at possibly using some kind of a filter/restricted tool/etc., it'd be taken down immediately, ay?

How is it fair if you play favorites?

Now you say you're not convinced, and yet the color reduction and his piece show only a few differing signs. Just a few pixels different in only 3 or 4 spots.

I believe that you are blowing this completely out of proportion. This point need not be argued as I'm sure that it is completely justifiable in regards to pixel art.

You have quoted this rule, however, I am sure that you are aware that almost every pixel artist (Ones on this forum included) do not place every.single.pixel by hand, and yourself probably included. The line tool, fill bucket, the ability to change brush sizes and the color replace tool are tools that almost all of us use. Using these tools make pixel art easier, however, each pixel is not placed by hand when using these tools. Would you still consider a piece that uses the fill bucket tool or line tool not pixel art?

The color redux in this instance has been used as another tool to make the creation of pixel art easier. It is not as if Elk has used the redux tool on a photo from the internet and claiming that it is pixel art that he has created. The piece that Elk has color reduced is his own, color reducing it has not given him an advantage over other pixel artists. The pixel techniques present in the end result are solely his own and not generated by the computer.

It is comprable to those pallette generators on the internet (The ones where you input on color, usually your midtone, and it will generate a pallette with highlights and shadow colors based on your input). This is a computer generated effect that you can apply to your pixel art, though would using a palette that a computer generated mean that your pixel art is no longer pixel art? Because thats exactly what Elk has done here, his pixel art is still his pixel art. The computer did not generate the art for him, it simply generated the pallette.

This is also not a case of favoritism. I'm sure that if you had used the color redux tool in the same way you would not be attacked on it the same way Elk is currently. I find Pixel Joint to be a fair and welcoming community, it is you who are stirring the trouble and pretending that it isnt fair.

But... that's not really your call:

Without trying to sound like a personal attack on you, because believe me its far from it, an attitude like this won't get you far on these forums and most likely in life either. Whilst it is true that it isn't ultimately Lollige's call, it isn't yours either. It is the moderators calls, and by the looks of it, if they havn't replied to your report or taken the image down, they have made their call. You may not think that it is fair etc. etc. However, the moderators are the authority here and even though you may not agree with their decisions you should at least respect them. The moderators are here to keep the forums and gallery running smoothly so ultimately what they say goes.

Before you flame this post, or any other posts in this topic, try to look at the situation in detail. Is it really worth arguing about? Is it effecting your life so dramatically that you feel you must do something about it. You're better off not wasting your own and others time creating arguments over a piece of pixel art.

I didn't mean for my post to come off as rude or arrogant. D:

I'm sorry if it came off that way. I apologize, Lollige.

And, addressing your dispute about the tools:

With the line tool, flood fill, etc., you may not be the one putting every single pixel in place, BUT you control it. You're telling it exactly what to do.

With things such as color reduction, the script is totally automated and all you have to say is "Okay, go down to this many colors". As you've stated yourself, pixel art is pixel by pixel placement. With tools such as the ones in MS Paint, you're the one placing them. Maybe not individually, but it's relying on the creator. With a color redux, it's relying on the scripting.

So the basis is: Elk could have made the ark to 25 colors, making it his pixel art. But if he did indeed use a color reduction, the piece is no longer his; it's the script's.

[Edit]

Also, to address the last piece of your post (which I missed until after I posted this), that's an unanswerable question.

No because I could be doing better things, but yes because I could make this challenge prove to be fair.

Then, if what elk's doing is fine, I could use digital drawing (which is way easier) and even use sai's line corrector, then paint the picture digitally, use color reduction and some retouching and that would be pixel art? Pixel art that I could submit to a challange? I think not. It's taken me too much time to train my eye for the right colors for then being told I could have done it that way

I have been biting my tongue so far but this is it .... I am going to say it....

1)  Jealousy makes you nasty and waste your time while you could be improving your own pixelling by practicing what you preach and showing everyone how mature you are!

2)  GET A LIFE!    The guy's a genius.

1. Err, jealous? Far from it~

Elk has some great work in his gallery, no doubt, but I'm not jealous of him. I'm very happy with my life and my techniques. Why would I be jealous of someone when I'm happy with what I've already got?

I'm fighting this because, quite simply, if he used color reduction it's not fair. It demeans the work of everyone in the competition. I didn't enter, start an entry, or even contemplate entering, so I'm an unbiased observer.

I... don't really see how you pulled jealousy out of all this? o.o;

2. Coming from the one screaming at people fighting for justice? Talk about hypocrite~

And: Genius, no. Good pixel artist, yes, but... no, not a genius. A genius of pixel art wouldn't have any contemplation over the validity of his works. :P
