CHALLENGE: Final Boss

Create a mock up of an original game showing the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_(video_games) - final boss battle . Just a reminder: As per usual, your entire challenge entry must be made during this week.

Canvas Size - Max 320 x 240.
Colours - Max 32.
Transparency - No.
Animation - No.


CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.

ill give it a shot. Not very good at mock-ups (i suck at backgrounds) but lets see what comes out of this. i already made some advances on this. Its in a really early stage, but i think i can manage to make it until sunday - the biggest challenge will be to actually do it with just 32 colors X.x as always,they are my original characters Tora, Clark and Tille, fighting the "Space Stalker" (ya, got a whole story with these guys. maybe I can write it around here later xD) cool name for a final huh?. The stalker isnt visible for the moment though :P.
 
I want to see whatthe rest is going to make, im pretty anxious. Hope im not the only one with an RPG in mind.

Ho hum, a very rough draft.

I'm experimenting with different mouths on the boss and different positions of the player, any mouth examples that you guys think would look good would be very much appreciated.



also, i've never made a background before, so the cave will be a trick to make

I think I miss understand something.
Must I make a original final boss battle scene for the competition with original Characters & Boss only with my own style and in a other position ?

Also, I like the Aku mouth idea, but I think this one works better for one with something hanging out.

I made a change of tone from the original

And I know the menu isn't lined up correctly

This BG is a placeholder, while I didn't have catacombs in mind, I might go with that, should be manageable.

Inphy: That's lookin' pretty solid, but a little bit generic, though i know you're not done.

I'm gettin' there, still working out a better way to same "game over"
Really, any boss is the final boss if you can't get past em.

still working here, i think im going pretty well. The background challenges me though X.x pkus i dont know what weapon i can give to the girl :S I kinda feel the characters are too big to fit a cool ending battle, but ill manage to make it somehow... i guess. any ideas for a weapon? i would appreciate it!

Also, I'm nearing completion, here. Still have to do some shading and redo the background, though. The text shouldn't take too long.

i would go with a kunai with chain. Its very graceful and i think it would work well with a girl.

Why would 'original' mean remaking a game that already exists? That is the complete opposite of what is required.

Original: Your own game, invented by you - not fanart, not a remake, not a demake, not a clone, not a reboot, not a reinvention, not an adaptation.

Your own ideas; a game that has never been seen before.

CookieMan Adventures: Candyland
the game is based on a cookie man that has escaped from the "fridge prison" and trying to escape from the candyland.... so he got to the northest spot of the area (almost out) and he met santa...hungry santa!,and he tryed to eat him,but the cookieman have magical powers so he beated him after a couple of hours of trying and he escaped.. but now he's in a bigger trouble,he's in the real world...how will he escape from there? that is saved for "Cookieman Adventures 2: The Real World" Hope you like it  ^ ^

p.s. I wish i could do that game....xD

@ Oren: It's cute, but the gingerbread man could use some AA around his icing, and the font is pretty hard to read.

@Puck: She looks a bit like she's leaning back, it may be easier to do a stationary firing position, so you don't have to worry about how limbs fall on their own, in a relaxed position.

And their next one, Machinarium, looks like it will be even better, from the video previews.

that's a really cool playing field inphy, I think it would add a great extra dimension to either fighting games, where you have to stay on the platform as it scrolls from background to foreground while fighting, or at least in an rpg like yours, where you can move to forward and back positions, like some FF games. good stuff

Prustel, your Boss seems like a combination of Haunter and Ghastly, and your player's left thigh doesn't look right with that shading, maybe lighten up the inside of the leg.

ok ive advanced a lil bit on the boss. I think it looks fitting for a final huh? thx for the advise on the weapon everyone, ill stick with AtrSix idea (thx btw) The background does everything so hard though X.x hope i can finish this befroe the deadline. Its a really fun challenge!

You could try bringing out the rocks that are closest to the floor - the wall looks a bit like a straight wall perpendicular to the floor, with a rocky wallpaper. Quick edit:

Some things I like, some things I don't like. I really wish I could add some kind of texture to the rocks, but I'm not that good :P

Texture to the background seems to be the next thing, although it will only be simple. I also need to actually add the boss and the player which I'm not looking forward to.

The rough idea behind it is that the main character is in a computer game, except he becomes sentient and tries to get out. In the final boss battle, the game designer tries to sabotage the game in order to stop the main character from escaping. I was thinking of adding some 'glitched' tiles to show this, it would be quite an interesting thing to try out.

Are You saying that the rocks themselves look flat? or that the wall looks flat when it should be curved? what exactly do you mean? I'm not exactly sure what you did in the edit either. I appreciate your criticism, Ind I really want to fix it! Thanks.

getting close to finishing, just need to finish up the dragon, add a HUD, and re-touch areas of the background.

Looking nice, especially the bricks :)

I think *his* left wing should  be a bit lower and it seems to be at a little bit of an odd angle. I was playing Super Castlevania 4 recently; this could possibly be a helpful reference:



Also, I would ease up a bit on the ordered dither. Maybe reduce the contrast in the background too.

I think this would be better if it were an action shot; what is the main character doing - calmly loitering around while the boss is about to slice his head off?

skamocore: updated again, i made some crappy wings before your post, but I can't really do much about the contrast in the background (well, apart from the red rocks) without bringing the foreground down as well, and I think it is pretty necessary in the foreground. The ordered dither everywhere was more of a time saver than anything else, its easy to do and I needed to cover a lot of area and have been spending a lot more time than I wanted on this.

Anyways thanks for the reference, probably going to wipe these wings and have another go, soon

Oh, too bad I didn't have a chance to submit my Dragon Warrior themed dragon. I finished it recently a few days ago (aug. 11). Oh well, I probably didn't complete it according to the rules somewhere anyway. :)
