a Banette character of mine for a contest on another forum, made using only the Azure Dreams GBC monster sprite colors. There wasn't a restriction on the contest itself, but I had just ripped the AD GBC sprites and wanted to do something with them.

Looks funny, but difficult to read!
I first saw a snakelike thing on top of a smaller pumpkin-headed one...
Maybe give it some feet?

Also, a more lateral, obvious source of light would probably help. Are you going to make a bg?

The colors are too saturated, but from what you say you have to do with them. If so, I would suggest to mainly stick to a couple of them (greys and oranges maybe) and make the others less important. In the bg, as a secondary source of light, in the eyes...

And, too much dithering at the moment!

Switched green and orange. Looks better now methinks. Also got rid of some of the excess dithering and tried to make the feet easier to see.
I probably won't add a background since I'm not too good at those, but the lightsource is supposed to be coming from the pumpkin (and I probably messed up on that, so please correct me where I did)

I don't think this needs dithering at all. A smooth, cel-shaded style would suit the line art perfectly. The thing in the back looks a hundred times better than the thing in the front for it.

ditched the color restrictions in favor of a better-looking pixel.
(the thing in the back of the head should be darker, I know)
