UPDATE #1: Thank you for the initial e-mails on this project, quite a few impressive styles out there! I will continue to accept interested party info throughout this week (until 10/24/09) , and will then pick one, two, or possibly even three artists to assist with the project depending on your individual strengths.

UPDATE #2: Everyone, the deadline has been reached! It is now 10/24/09. We will be reviewing all applicants and making contact with the individuals we select. I'll return here to give the results as well and make an additional call for help if any areas are left unfilled.

UPDATE #3: Sunday Night, almost done reviewing! We'll be in touch throughout the day on Monday and be back with a new post here when we've finalized the positions. Thanks for your patience :)

Everyone, I've been a longtime lurker here for several years, and have always admired the incredible work that you all do!

My name's Kevin Hill, and my one-man company is ChronoSoft, based in the northeastern United States. Presently I'm working on what will hopefully become a series of games with RPG and tactical elements to them. This game is considered a "rogue-like", and if you need to understand what that means, please google it and then read on! ChronoSoft has previously released "Rogue Touch" for the iPhone, a remake of the original 1980 computer game of rogue (and taking cues from the 1986 Atari ST version) with a mixture of public domain graphics and some items, monsters, and dungeon elements drawn by me. It was a modest success in the App Store, and now we're looking to take things to the next level!

The current Project: Unknown Title (or "PUT" for now) that is an original design by me. requires a level of animation and graphical detail that I simply cannot supply, especially while being the primary programmer on this. I have been working with an artist already, but sheer quantity of work needed and level of attention forces me to put out this open call for help.

The art style and gameplay will have a lot in common with Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, as seen and played on the Nintendo DS or originally back on the SNES (with a bit higher detail level). Please, if you have not played this game, check it out so that we understand each other better

Specific graphic needs:

Human characters- 8 directional movement, of which we're only requiring 5 directions drawn (up, up/right, right, down/right, and down). The other three will be mirrored in software to save on memory. These characters will have idle animation, walking, attacking with a preferred weapon for the character, and an alternate ranged weapon attack such as a bow/arrow. There will be a few special poses for use of items like potions, scrolls, and so forth, as well as a dead/sleeping sprite.

One, two, or three human characters may be required. I have some good samples of these already, but depending on your specific art style these may need some rework or replacement.

Monsters- 8 directional movement, of which we're only requiring 5 directions drawn (up, up/right, right, down/right, and down). The other three will be mirrored in software to save on memory. Monsters will have idle animation, walking, attacking with whatever natural attribute or weapon they have, and perhaps a special skill/ability (such as a dragon breathing fire) Dead/sleeping sprites will be needed as well.

The monster types, names and concepts are coming from me, but it would be up to you to take my descriptive ideas (and sample image ideas if I locate any) and come up with the final look and feel.

Number of monsters required- final total is not yet determined, but it is anticipated to be between 15 and 30 types of monster!

Inventory items:
Variety of objects like weapons, armor, scrolls, potions, gems, herbs, glasses, amulets. Details would be provided of course.

Dungeon tiles:
Several types of dungeon tile design (again, Shiren is a good example), including castle-like floors and walls, dirt floors and walls, water, lava, ice. Misc tiles to make rooms look more lived in and interesting- things like pillars, thrones, a wall tile with a torch or gargoyle face, etc.

Ideally, the candidate(s) for this project would be paid on a contract basis per sprite frame (or tile) drawn. I would be willing to put down a small retainer up-front for trust, and then continue to pay you daily or weekly as completed items are submitted and approved by me. Paypal is the preferred payment method, if you have alternate suggestions please mention them. As you can imagine based on the number of sprites and poses needed this game will take quite a period of time to complete. In addition to payment for all work provided, you will be listed in the game credits.

What I'd like to know from you:

1) Some work samples I can see? Your portfolio here or a link to your website perhaps?
2) What price would you like to receive per sprite-frame or tile, assuming a size between 32x32 to no greater than 64x64 pixels? My budget is decent, but finite in size.
3) Availability? Can you start right away, will you be sharing time with other projects?
4) Any questions you might have?

Everyone, I wanted to let you know that I'm very impressed, the response was incredible and a bit overwhelming here! I've spent the weekend reviewing portfolios and samples, and have made initial offers to no less than five individuals out of the dozens of e-mails.

I apologize for not being able to write back to everyone individually, please know that I'll be keeping addresses for everyone in case some of my first round picks fall through or another project that may be suitable to your specific art style arises.

Thanks again!
