How strictly do we have to stick to the lineart?

can we add to the monsters, and erase parts of it?

Posted By: skamocore
Date Posted: 09 November 2009 at 12:50am
I'd rather you keep modification to the lineart at a minimum.

It should be extremely clear that you have used the lineart provided. You can still be creative with how you use the lineart as most of these are fairly open to interpretation, especially since you are also making their surroundings. No major surgery on the lines.

Chances are that it should be fine if it remains clearly identifyable that you  have used the lineart. There shouldn't be creatures submitted which look nothing like the lineart.

Post your idea in here if you're unsure.

Might just spend some time on it.

I don't think you're allowed to use work started before the week

@skull, Yup, new entries only. I bet you could do better than that anyway now.

Q: the BG can be just a color? or it have to be something like a forest etc.?

Trying to make better shading but don't know how.

Can it be any one of his line arts? or does it have to be one of these?
And can it be multiple linearts in one piece?

Posted By: skamocore
Date Posted: 09 November 2009 at 7:21am
No, yes, no.

Also, Arachne is a she.

i'm doing the fifth one but can you delete or redo the innerlines ?

Posted By: vampireslug

Here's my first WIP... I'm not the best at coloring/shading (just ask Lollige about my palettes!) but I keep trying and, hopefully, get better with each try.

Hi all, first post on PJ.
Here's my WIP:

I plan to add more details, expecially in the area around the mouth.

Posted By: Noet
Date Posted: 09 November 2009 at 12:12pm
is this okay?

Posted By: skamocore
Date Posted: 09 November 2009 at 12:43pm
Yes, stuff like that should be fine. It's obvious you've kept the overall structure/lines of the creature.

It only shouldn't be fine if people start completely reinventing chunks of the lineart. Basically, common sense should work well in determining if it's ok.

Is it okay if you get rid of the outlines? I mean, like coloring it and all, but removing the outlines so it blends with the background.

Posted By: skamocore
Date Posted: 09 November 2009 at 1:10pm
Yep yep. Fine as long as it keeps the general silhouette.

This will be my first challenge :D

I had a hard time picking one cos I really adore several of them, but mouthseam was getting no love at all, so I chose mouthseam.

Here is an extreeeeeemely rough WIP:

I've used backlighting a lot while painting but I've never tried to pixel it and I'm going to confess that the teeth are 100% stumping me. I am having trouble finding a happy balance between the harsh backlighting and maintaining the volume/shape of the teeth =/ Any advice, anyone? You can see how they're already looking sorta flat.

Spirou: The texture so far on yours is REALLY well done. Is the ramp permanent? I'd love to see what it'd be like with some hue and/or saturation shifts to really make your work pop.

Looking good! I think that those teeth you've already done retain their shape well.

Decided to use the XP Paint palette for some reason.

Looking pretty good there Petrichor...I chose that same creature and the teeth are giving me the same type of trouble.

If it helps, look at how Fool made the thorns on his Poison Tree:

@jeremy -I think you really benefit from this challenge because you are excellent at colour/shade but the anatomy is usually lacking, here with the anatomy done we can really see what you can do!

I'm going to try to do this challenge, I'm not very good but since I don't have to do the lineart it will be much easier.

This is what I have so far

Posted By: jeremy
Date Posted: 10 November 2009 at 3:34pm
@Photocopier: haha, probably true.

@Seiyouh: I'm pretty sure you need to keep the whole canvas size

@mambazo: Yup, ska said you can change the colour or even completely remove them, they're just as a guide really.

Date Posted: 10 November 2009 at 4:23pm
I'm liking that lighting, Mambazo.

It's gonna be interesting to see all the different versions of the same creatures

Almost done, just need to add scenery. I was wondering if you could draw over the body a bit to make something. =/

Posted By: AdamF
Date Posted: 10 November 2009 at 8:45pm
Jeremy, might i say that before you do all your texturing and such; try and add some volume to it before you do your initial polishing. put some darker shades in there, try to remove the flat-ness your work normally has

coming along good, tho!

@greenraven - then maybe you should have a go...you have more than enough skill in the participation requirement you mentioned in your post.

@AnonymousLawl - I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but I think it should be alright. Maybe post an example of what you mean.

Some of these are looking great so far, can't wait to see them finished.

Well, here's my latest... more shading and shadows.  I'm still not feeling very confident about my highlights and the balloon could use some work but I'm not sure how.  The balloon makes sense in the context of the BG which I'm still keeping separate for the time being.

I'd say it's finished. The background turned out better than I expected, and I changed the monster palette a bit (using less saturated colors) to contribute to the mood. Tips and suggestions are more than welcome (I'm a beginner after all)

Posted By: mambazo

@Gygrazo: The background looks really really good, and the birds are a great touch! Only one thing bugs me, I don't feel like the monster connects with the ground, perhaps is it a style clash, or the observed angle of the rocks?

Question, may I make a bigger canvas please?

Is the bottom part be compliant with the rules, or should no division into various new parts (within the lineart) occur?

I would like to suggest that all these great pieces be displayed on a page all it's own, as a homage to Arachne.

If not here, I can put them on my website if I get your permissions...
