It was around 2003 in August. While I was playing on my GBA SP I wanted to make one of those characters, (I didn't know what sprites were called back then), so I went on my computer and eye traced a SMB2 Luigi from the screen, http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m102/Josiahiouigi/1luigifan-1.png This was way before I knew how to change any setting in Paint.
After that sprite, I decided to make more and more by eyetracing from the GBA screens, which led me to the creation of these terrible sprite comics. I wish I still had them for the nostalgia though...
And so after awhile, one of my friends got Super Mario World for the GBA. I really wanted to have it, so I traded a game with him... I think it was Star Wars Battlefront (a very stupid trade but I didn't know any better), so then I started to eye trace the Super Mario World Mario which turned out to be better than what I've done from before because I made a decsicion to shade. Which was a good move, overtime I started to make my own little graphics. I still did a little eye-tracing here, but eventually stopped doing it. I kept all of the files on an old E-Machine 500 hard drive. I think I've made eight pages of little graphics. (I really need to find out how to get the files out of the hard drive)
I eventually decided to join a website called MFGG (Mario Fan Games Galaxy) where I shared my work to others. It was where I first got critique and didn't take it too well. (and I was 13 or even nearly 14 so it wasn't too long ago
) But soon as I discovered this place I saw how incredible pixel art is, which inspired me to become a better pixelartist. And even in early sophomore year the art classes really helped as well) Once my family and I moved to Arizona I was able to practice my traditional art skill even more.
Josiah @ 7/6/2009 6:38:51 PM commented on Onward, Gustav! While some of the proportions of the characters are still somewhat uneven, the coloring was still done well. And I think the castle should probably look more silhouette like. Good work overall Dex :)
Josiah @ 12/18/2008 5:46:48 PM commented on Adventure Mash Mockup Oh, I thought that was part of the flower, heheh...
Josiah @ 12/18/2008 11:51:06 AM commented on Adventure Mash Mockup I love this so much, great atmosphere once again! But i've just noticed the portrait has a different hair color than the sprite standing.
Josiah @ 11/22/2008 6:05:22 PM commented on Fable 2 Troll You can still give this so much more, the arms and top look flat and uninteresting, but what you do have is well done.
Josiah @ 11/17/2008 2:40:31 PM commented on Dungeons of the Fox The wolf doesn't quite fit into the compisition it just seems to be pasted, I would say use both lightsources together for the wolf so that he fits better. I love this though.
Josiah @ 11/17/2008 12:15:42 AM commented on An iLKke-atar, how original The only flaw in your attempt to imitate is how soft the face is, in the avatar the highlights stick out more giving us a more 3 dimensional geometric face with luster and crisp. Still, it's good work.
Josiah @ 11/7/2008 8:32:14 PM commented on Still Life I would like to see what this image looks like when the cherry is a little more separated from the background, I love the impressionism though, good use of the colors.
Josiah @ 10/26/2008 10:36:29 PM commented on A smiley thing This first appeared to me as lips, you know.. I think it would be cool if you were to make a face using this kind of style.
Josiah @ 10/11/2008 8:57:03 AM commented on Mushi Room demo(level02) Seems as if you've directly taken one of iLKke's rocks from his mockup and pasted it only double sized http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/18364.htm http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m102/Josiahiouigi/rip3368875628-iaza.gif As for the mockup, there are many NPA elements here, you should never use any photoshop tools. You must choose all of your colors and keep them under control. And as for structure, your tiles are very generic there's hardly any variation nor organic elements that would help increase the sense of a believeable/adventurable world. I suggest to you, that maybe you should learn more of the basics of art. You know, how to shade, draw shapes, perspective, ect. It could really help you become a more effective artist.

Josiah @ 9/29/2008 10:18:24 PM commented on RETRO IS WINNER [mini] hrm, well.... that Mario is from SMB....and most of this wasn't excecuted so well, it's very scrappy. Sorry to say... But I know you could do something better than this, you've seemed to prove that in the rest of your gallery.
Josiah @ 9/18/2008 10:38:09 PM commented on meh jesses icon :P There is a non-pixeled light effect and it's saved in jpeg format. Make sure to save in png or gif, and never use any effects from photoshop. Pixelart should be done entirely by hand.

Josiah @ 7/2/2008 2:02:10 AM commented on Abstract Commentary on our world today This is what I see when I look at this imageAround in the red area I see a battle between ancient soldiers. In the blue area I can see a weird underwater monster with it's mouth wide open as if it's going to engulf something. As for the black area, the only thing I can notice is that it looks as if massive groups of people are stranded walking endlessly. It's my representation of how the skies are in anger from the pollution causing turmoil, the monster is the water that will flood our shorelines if the icecaps keep melting, and the people are within the chaos.
Josiah @ 6/30/2008 2:12:38 PM commented on One More Time Haha, you can see a nose on the mushroom! Great work, lovely atmosphere. |
