I asked friends for opinions and none of them had an easy time seeing the cape without the dark blue marks I made to define the shape. I ended up keeping it.
Variation or permutation on the classical hollow animated armor is what I meant.

Hmm, yeah, I can see that happening. Without them the back surface of the cape wouldn't be defined and therefore there wouldn't be any hollow volume, it'd be just flat.
