Super mario world was the first game I ever played, and I remember as a kid this is what I thought mario looked like. I imagined him as a bit of a chubbier, bushy italian dude instead of the modern version that he ended up looking as. This is my take!

I relate to this, honestly. I think I was about two years old when I first started playing this game and even to this day I would still play that on any version any day. This is taking into considderation that I have played the OG SNES game in both English and Japanese, the GBA and even on VC.

And that's not even the half of how much love I have for this game owning two physical copies of the former and knowing the hacking scene behind it just because I can't seem to get enough of the game itself. Anyhow this pixel art has earned my favorite even without my bias towards that game.

However, this piece isn't without my critiques.

-The colors are wisely chosen and used, in fact it's great that you're utilizing the colors in a way that can allow you to use certain colors for highlights or shadows in the shading and still use them as general dark colors. In other words that was wisely chosen. However, one of the things that I would have wish to seen was a little bit of anti-aliasing in certain spots where the lines seem jagged. I think that would have helped smooth the outline a little bit even when you are using your colors in the way that you are.

- The details are very nice, the hue shift on the nose work wonders and I feel a strong sense of how this is able to pop. In fact one of my favorite details in this happen to be the eyes, which are exactly how I would have thought mario looked like in my childhood. The only thing that I would have perhaps took into considderation is if the "M" on mario's hat could have been tweaked a little so that the right side (on our left) didn't hit the rest of the hat, However, this is only a minor gripe given you're aiming for a 3/4 view and there is only so much you can do with the perspective.

-The smoke is a nice touch, however as I had mentioned in my prior criticism I feel like giving it some anti aliasing between the color of the smoke and the transparency would have helped smooth the jaggies.

In spite of all my critques, I think this is a pretty strong piece. I look forward to seeing some more stuff from you in the future.
