too awesome, i definately have to study your technique on lighting, you pull it off so smoothly and effortless seeming...

It came out great!

The effects are done greatly.

thanks tacw and dogmeat.  I think you're right about making them come from above dogmeat.  While i do have a lot of room below... they aren't showing up very well with the lack of contrast.  If i do put some more time into this piece I think ill do that.

user
TACW (Level 1 Rookie) @ 11/1/2006 04:16
Wow, this came out really good. :)

Here's a link with info on composition: http://painting.about.com/library/blpaint/blcompositionclass2.htm

If you put the focus of your image dead center, it makes a piece rather bland and boring, and it doesn't cause the eye to move about the piece and take in the whole scene.
I'd almost be inclined to move Oogie to the left part of the scene, and when you get the time to add birds to the foreground, have them sort of swirling around and attacking him from  the right. His current posture has a lot of motion, but it looks more like he's leaning backwards a bit to avoid an attack, rather than moving forward.

thanks guys.  Darkfalzx, i've said several times now that i had planned to do birds up front tugging at oogie's seems and that i couldn't because i didn't have anymore free time, but that i would add that when i did have more free time.  Sorry to sound rude but its starting to sound like a broken record up in here.

good work overall jww, you're improving more and more every piece man.

user
DarkfalzX (Level 6 Hitman) @ 10/29/2006 16:03
Love the quality of the pixeling, but the composition is weak indeed: ( As far as I understand Oogie is running away from the birds, but as all of them are SO far away, you can barely tell. Now, if you had some birds right behind him - that would've been nice.

user
Scruffs (Level 7 Assassin) @ 10/29/2006 13:06
really?  i mean they're pretty visible, they're the only thing in the background highlighted in yellow.

user
Jason_c_o (Level 1 Depressed) @ 10/29/2006 13:01
It took me a while to notice the tiny little birds in the back. I'd say bring some into the foreground, maybe getting ready to attack O.B. or something. Make it look like there's actually conflict instead of showing him standing there with !tiny! birds behind him.

Scruffs (Level 7 Assassin) @ 10/29/2006 11:04
hmm im not sure what you mean.  Im not sure why to depict a 'versus' the two parties have to be in contact in the scene to show motion.  What i depicted was oogie running away from bloodsucking birds.  I thought that the expression and pose of oogie was enough to show that.  I highlighted the two parties in yellow to make them stand out from the rest of the picture.  Oogie is the focus of the piece, which is why i put him in the center.  The birds are insiginificant but if you saw the movie in great numbers they prove very deadly.  I see where you're coming from but i just wanted to illustrate for you what was going through my head when putting this piece together.

The elements of this piece are all really wonderful, and I look forward to seeing you expand this piece to include some birds in the foreground.

I do find the composition of this piece rather weak though. I think it would be much improved if you moved Oogie away from dead-centre of your canvas, and onto the third lines. The character has motion, but the overall piece is extremely static.

Scruffs (Level 7 Assassin) @ 10/29/2006 09:39

whoa, thanks for all the comments guys =)  I looked at oogie boogie in the movie and saw he is much greener than mine.  I guess i should have based it more on the movie than a videogame where he plays a smaller role =P  About the birds,  I know they're rather insiginificant at the moment.  When starting this idea, i had the exact same idea as you milkyjon, having a few birds tugging at the seems of oogie's body.  Unfortunately i finished this piece really late last night and wouldn't have any time to add those birds today.  I may still add them in the future but not in time for the competition.  As for the moon, i wanted to do something simple, since the moon in halloweentown is just a yellow circle basically.  Yet, i didn't really want it that simplistic because i didn't think it fit, so i put in some random shading.  I guess i could have done more with the moon though.    Thanks for all the comments, praise, and favs ^_^

@mykola - laziness pays off, hot damn :D  glad you like it =)

Mykola (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 10/29/2006 08:45

Call me crazy and all that but I actually love how subtle the birds are here.

Instead of going for the obvious and 'logical' depiction of the birds in contact with Oogie, you captured the moment before the fight starts, actually it's really cool since you captured a good dose of suspense in the air.

You've outdone yourself once again.

user
milkyjon (Level 4 Murderer) @ 10/29/2006 08:30
This is really nice Especially Oogie. In the film Ooogie has a layer that resembles a cassino with lots of florecent lights that make him appear lumonuse green/orange, but for the remainder of the film hes jus kinda like a potatoe sack colour much like youve done abouve. I would have liked to see a bigger influence on the birds aswell, kinda jus looks like a swarm of bees at the moment. A few birds pulling on threads revealing parts of Oogies bug filledn guts would look real nice. And the wave like hill would really give an instant feel for NMBC film. Really nice work tho, one of my favs so far.

Beautiful piece. However I feel the moon looks to plain and takes away from the rest of the scene.

100% Awesome. I love you, Jake. :D

The ambient lighting should stick out slightly more

Then it would be awsomer.

I l o v e the Nightmare before christmas and i l o v e the Birds (i watched them last night!) and i love your piece but the problem is that the birds play a waaaay too small role in the picture.. i wouldnt really guess the birds here if not for the title... anyways i love this piece and i think it is another favorite - Im faving it zAk

Sohashu (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/29/2006 01:56
Oogie looks great.  Though I suggest you actually look at Oogie in the movie.   However, I don't  think change is necessary.  This is still great.  Fav'd.

Filax_666 (Level 6 Hitman) @ 10/29/2006 01:39
Probably one of the most original ideas till now and so well executed too...I´m in love with Boogie´s rendering too. Great job.

A thought regarding Oogie´s colour. I believe that in fight scene between Jack and him there are a lot of lights (orange and green and stuff) so yeah, I thinks he looks green most of the time.

'but for now im pretty content (dead tired) with the current image at the moment.'

:F redundant, sorry for the double comment but forgot to adress some things.  bob, im not sure about the colour of oogie in the movie (never saw it actually : O) but the colour of oogie is based off his kingdom hearts appearance.  But once again thanks for all the great comments and favs.  I really appreciate it =)

user
Scruffs (Level 7 Assassin) @ 10/29/2006 00:19

thanks for all the great comments guys ^_^

i had planned to do a bird in the foreground pecking at the seems of oogie but just never got around to doing it, and frankly got lazy.  I may add that on later, but for now im pretty content (dead tired) with the current image at the moment.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 10/29/2006 00:11
Great job. The "versus" aspect is a little hard to see. The BG is even better than Oogy.

user
The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 10/28/2006 23:28

Wow, this is awesome..Mr. Oogy Boogy is rendered great, though I could have sworn he was green in the movie(guess it's been awhile since I've seen it)? Doesn't take any thing away from this piece though. The moon looks a little bland and unfinished, as do the birds. But again, this is extremely awesome. Surely, you've locked yourself a top spot...(bastard, you probably stole my glory at the top)...At any rate, Awesome friggin' piece!!

user
DJD (Level 4 Button Man) @ 10/28/2006 22:51
What can I say man. I completely doubted you when you pitched the idea to me at school. I'm so glad you didn't listen to me make fun of you, because you completely outdid yourself. Great job; I cannt stop staring at those perfect folds in his burlapbody. :D

(Ryu's right about the swirly hill though :F )

user
ryumaru (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 10/28/2006 22:43
I totally admire all the work you put into it. During our chats I was amazed at the level of your self critique that ive never seen you put upon yourself before. The composition is great, the birds are done with keeping them as a main subject by using such an amount of contrast, but depth has also been thought of. My only complaint is the lack of swirly hill. You can tell I admire this by the use of caps in my sentances, something I never do :P.
