Since I used a lot of contrast in my last piece, I wanted to try something altogether different this time. I'm not sure how long it took me, but I think it was time well spent. Any feedback is welcome.

Big thanks to everyone who helped me with this in the Pixelation thread.

Progress animation.

Wow, I really hadn't expected this kind of response. Really glad to hear you liked it!

Larwick - I figured that fishing nets left out might get caught on the creature, and I don't think it would have much difficulty in destroying a wooden ship if one got in its way. So, yes, it is supposed to be an anchor.

Skurwy87 - Yeah, there are a few of those. After I AA a part, I usually compare it to the previous step to see if it actually looks better. Then I keep the parts that look best and give what's left another try, but sometimes I might need as many as 3 or 4 attempts to get it right, and that got tedious fast this time. I'll see if I can find all the over-AA'ed parts and do some cleaning up.

neota - That's a good point. I'll see what I can do.

stickjohn - I see what you mean. I had a bit of trouble getting the darkest parts to look smooth enough with the sudden jump to the darkest color from the second darkest, so I'll give the AA on the men and the boat another go.

iLKke - There was a bit of discussion about the reflected light in the Pixelation thread. I looked at a bunch of photos of sunlight reflected in the sea and decided to keep it that way. I don't imagine open sea is ever still, so I think reflections will be distorted even without wind (or giant monsters wading around). I think the light is too far away for it to reflect off of the men. The boat might with a bit of water on it, but I don't see any surfaces angled in a way that would let us see it.

un-freaking-real. Most of the piece doesn't even look remotely like a pixel art. The only complaint i would have it that the people and boat look out of place. Not because they are done poorly though, just because the rest of the piece is done so fantastically well.

Oh my african boogers! Thats madness right here man. The contrast, the subtlety, the texture, the presence, all perfectly calibrated to the tee. I love it. It looks like it was a pain to make and for that i thank you. Fav times a thousand. I can't get enough of those highlights in the hairy texture of the monster. It's just so tasty to my eyes. :D

really amazing composition, colors and done. I really like these "big monsters", remind me a little bit to the game "shadows of colossus".  respect!...

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 9/15/2008 04:46
Wonderful in every possible respect. Very Lovecraft-ish :D
My favorite bit is how the 'hair' gets abstracted in the lower parts.

Personally I think that the reflections in the water don't make much sense. Perhaps it would have been better to instead let the green light show a bit on the boat and fishermen.

I think I can see people and ships entangled in those things. Do they get slowly digested over time?

Really fucking awesome.

user
neota (Level 8 Shodan) @ 9/14/2008 07:39
Huge ominous furry things on rocks? I approve of this.
Also, putting that amount of work into a picture without insisting it be ultra neat, I respect that ( I hope to acquire that skill myself.).
Water is really excellent,  The most near bits of grass have some odd non-smoothness (IMO with the focus on the furry things, the hills should be mostly even more defocused than the people)

user
CobaltHex (Level 3 Stalker) @ 9/14/2008 07:36

user
BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) @ 9/13/2008 15:51

O.O

Very cool. The bottom of the creature kinda bugs me as well. Looks kinda blurry, but I dunno if this is the fog or not.

user
Solitaire (Level 1 Depressed) @ 9/13/2008 15:31
holy shit

user
Larwick (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 9/13/2008 15:31
I love this so much. Really amazing mood, and very inspiring.
One thing i wonder about though, is that anchor-shape above the farthest persons head. There are other strange lines there, almost as if the creature has destroyed a ship or something, but it's very hard to tell - and the anchor-shape bugs me i must admit.
