A background for a sidescroller shmup I'm planning to do.

7-8 layers of parallax, of which 4 (the water) has been animated for demonstration purposes. It's too fast and the layer speeds are disproportionate, but that's in order to get a full cycle of even the slowest layer without pushing the animation into multiple megabytes. It'll be fixed in code. :)

The background will end up being larger than this, the water/sky/background trees/grass layer are tiled and repeat throughout. The grass layer is decorated with assorted flora (edit: duh, not fauna) to make it less monotonous.

This wouldn't be half of what it is now if it weren't for encouragement and/or advice from (in no particular order :)) rustEdge, jalonso, snader, CaKsTeR, Ryath, Elk, Manupix, MyBuzz, ThereIsNoCure, Lollige, Kudohazama, TheRobinHood, shibumi and Kat1e. Many thanks!

The water effect looks genuine ^^

SunnyMorgan (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 6/22/2020 16:22

This is an instant favorite.. you can tell you put alot of work into this one!

Could I have your permission to use this as an intro sequence background? Plz and thanx!

gawrone (Level 11 Dimetrodon) @ 7/9/2019 02:04

This is hipnotyizing.

inphy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/15/2019 05:16

I haven't had anyone ask me for permission. Would you be able to link the video for me?

Gizmonicgamer (Level 4 Deputy) @ 1/3/2019 12:27

Adult Swim used this background in a recent video/post of theirs... was that authorized?

B_E_P_I_S_M_A_N (Level 1 Rookie) @ 6/13/2018 22:51

Nice!  Thought the parallax was Mode 7 for a second.

upper0 (Level 3 Sergeant) @ 7/15/2017 08:04

BeanyTheBeanster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/13/2017 13:48

Is it ok if I use this as a sort of background for my video?

PotatoGnome (Level 4 Sea Turtle) @ 8/21/2015 05:09

Awesome animation.

I like the grass color palette.

|||| (Level 9 Orchid) @ 4/20/2014 14:00

Wow this is too good!

I am in shock.

Vanilla tiramisu. (Level 1 Gangster) @ 6/27/2011 02:28

OMG, that's awesome, the colors, the water animation... I love it !
nostalgia, this makes me remind for old games.

peanutcookie (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 6/13/2011 12:05

 Instant Fave

SatTheArtist (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/24/2011 10:39

LOVEEEE Looking at this and seeing it was only #4 back then the other ones must of been freakin insane lol

tanuki (Level 1 Seaman) @ 1/20/2011 23:36

What I like about this isn't just that the water is great, but that the rest of the picture wasn't neglected. It's cool how the whole scene can be divided into three sections (sky, trees/grass, water) and each section has its own character but all fit together.

rafaelventura (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 11/8/2010 09:57

Very nice sense of depht!

avo (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 8/2/2010 06:14

i like the whole image, and the water animation especially

Mrmo Tarius (Level 10 Master Sniper) @ 5/22/2010 09:00

The water, even if it is faster than normal for filesize sake, animates UBER SMOOTH :)

Definitely didn't expect that from the preview :)

ooshmaster (Level 5 Soldier) @ 4/16/2010 23:10

looks aweome.

Larwick (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 3/22/2010 17:18

Oh my god i'm actually getting dizzy. That's an absolutely fantastic effect.

Tronlet (Level 1 Depressed) @ 3/19/2010 22:38

This is so beautiful to look at, I love it.

Dino502Run (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 3/15/2010 09:02

I freaking love this, and I could have sworn I made a comment on this a while ago, but since I didn't..  THIS ANIMATION IS AMAZING!!

Josiah (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 2/14/2010 18:39

Man I really want to see those clouds in motion, very nice by the way.

inphy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/9/2010 09:57

That has its share of problems, the waves have a degree of falloff to both left and right, and that might end up overdrawing the slower/faster waves excessively in the region where slices overlap. It might not be such a huge problem if the waves that spill over the boundaries are subtle... well, maybe I'm the damn problem in thinking that it will be a problem. :D I'll have to try it out, but first, I need to do some work on the engine so changes can be tested more easily. Thanks for the suggestion!

Chrispy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/8/2010 14:32

You could always do a layer thing, where each slice has a couple of waves that overlap the other plane. If you're just using flat sqaures for each plane it makes it kinda obvious.

keron11 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/8/2010 13:40

Omg thats so smooth.. awesome to watch

DioShiba (Level 4 Shoggoth (The Mountains of Madness)) @ 2/8/2010 13:39

I love how you pulled off the paralax on this one.

Awsome piece of art all together

inphy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/8/2010 11:11

Chrispy: In the Outer Wall? I think that works because it's not contiguous (more accurately, a fairly solid/level plane of something - "contiguous" being a possibly wrong choice of word initially), and I do a similar thing with the cloud layers here. I believe it doesn't translate very well to water, unless its raging high seas. :)

Shrub: The grid is already 16x16, I'd rather not divide it further. I think slices of a rather level plane will always be obvious, the flower meadow in the ending of Toki being a serious contender for the most obvious one ever. ;) Going further down that line, just doing a 3D quad would actually be more easier than doing a multilayer tilemap (and it'd automagically give perfect perspective), but I specifically want to keep a parallax effect.

edit: I could be very well be wrong though regarding "slices of a level plane will always be obvious", it's just something I have observed. I haven't seen everything there is to see. :)

Chrispy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/7/2010 21:05

Cave Story pulled off this effect pretty well using the same technique, but that was with clouds. I can imagine water being harder to do, but you could maybe look at it anyways just for reference.

Shrub (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/7/2010 15:17

Beautiful - but how about dividing the water into thinner "strips" - that would probably be more convincing.

inphy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/7/2010 14:12

Thanks for the comments and favs, pressure to deliver a decent game rising... :D

Everything will move ingame, including the clouds and the forest layer. The water was just the easiest to animate without making the frame count and file size blow up - if everything was animated for a full cycle and at correct speeds + framerate, the frame count would be approximately over 1280 (over 16x the current).

Wolverine: I'm hoping it will be more convincing when the relative speed between neighbouring slice is adjusted (now the top two slices have a relative speed difference of 2, whereas the bottom two have 4/3) and with the tweens from frame rate doubling (frame delay now is ~33 ms, in-game it will be ~16 ms). I think the slicing can't be completely masked though, as far as I can tell the problem is inherent in every game using parallax slices to depict a contiguous mass of anything (water, clouds, ...).

ev149 (Level 4 Button Man) @ 2/7/2010 12:49

I like it. A lot.

The clouds should probably move, though, if the water is too.  And I kinda agree with Wolverine, it's really obvious.

Chrispy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/7/2010 11:19

I keep coming back to this animation just to stare at it for a bit. I love this.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 2/7/2010 07:06

I dunno.  It's nicely pixelled but the strips of water look far too obvious to me to be convincing as a parallax effect.  Just doesn't work for me at all.

happip (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 2/7/2010 03:10

great! I like it a lot. keep up the good work! as said, clouds could move slowly, but it's not a big deal.

Dino502Run (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 2/6/2010 21:31

Great animation!  Very pleasing to the eye.  I love the trees and clouds too

crab2selout.png (Level 4 Deputy) @ 2/6/2010 15:57

very nice parallax. Ever played EVO Search for Eden(snes)? I really liked the multiple levels of  the parallax in that game too.

blueleds (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/6/2010 14:41

Too fast you say?  I think it's perfect.  The only thing to add would be the clouds moving too.  It could be some optical illusion, but they actually appear to be moving very slowly.

Victor Rojo (Level 10 King Ghidorah) @ 2/6/2010 12:03

beautiful scroll in water...inspire

bitswitcher (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 2/6/2010 06:37

 awesome, dude

TheInquisitor (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 2/5/2010 10:22

I'm amazed the water works so well like that. You can see where they separate if you focus, but as an effect it works great.

It's refreshing to see such a different piece appearing on the site.

Necroleachate (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 2/5/2010 07:54

The perpective effect on the water is purfect! Pure awesomeness!

klav (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 2/4/2010 17:36

the water is tricking me into thinking the clouds are moving.

BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) @ 2/4/2010 12:25

That water is fuckin' beautiful.

Can't wait to play it.

M. Lucanius (Level 5 Soldier) @ 2/4/2010 10:37

 quite remarkable

Delicious (Level 10 Capo) @ 2/4/2010 09:40

The water is great. This piece is very beautiful. :)

Nessiah (Level 4 Gas Giant) @ 2/4/2010 07:01

Whoa that water is amazing. Looovvee this~

DerZocker (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/4/2010 06:54

this is amazing! i guess it was a hell to calculate the frames for the animationloop^^

Antiboton (Level 8 Odds and Ends) @ 2/3/2010 13:54

Awesome water flow! That gives u max points.

jmgandalf (Level 5 Detective) @ 2/3/2010 09:14

Oh my.....i almost though that the river was 3D, awesome effect.

Now make those trees move by the wind and you will make drool forever.

Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) @ 2/2/2010 20:05

This is so awesome. Amazing palette, mesmerizing parallax effect.... I don't know what else to say. 7/7

myrkrig (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/2/2010 05:28

woa can look on this forever : -O

Green_Hell (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 2/2/2010 02:16

This is hypnotizing. I love it the way it is. Noticeable paralax efect makes it look old school and that's great IMO.

Antifarea (Level 4 Ensign) @ 2/2/2010 01:22

I really hate you... as in person-wise. But I like this.

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) @ 2/1/2010 22:03

You have done with water at this view what I have tried so many times and failed. Thanks, this piece is worthy of a study folder just for that great effect. Thanks a lot for the inspiration!

Buddy90 (Level 6 Manager) @ 2/1/2010 18:45

love how this came out

farinhabb (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/1/2010 16:25

Photocopier (Level 11 Godfather) @ 2/1/2010 16:14

really nice scrolling effects

JediDude (Level 4 Murderer) @ 2/1/2010 15:56

 That river is incredible!!!!

inphy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/1/2010 15:43

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, it's supposed to be a river.

bog (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 2/1/2010 15:11

hypnotic! i love it

it's probably a river, wouldn't an ocean imply a beach?

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 2/1/2010 14:38

Only critique I have is I'm not sure what body of water this is supposed to be. Is it a river, or an ocean? Reason why I ask, is that if it's a river, than this remains fine. But if it's an ocean, some of the tides should be smashing against each other, possibly going to towards the mainland...otherwise, awesome paralaxing effects going on here...wonderful job!

wenruto (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 2/1/2010 14:06

Looks Really GReat I Like It
