Amazing concept and pixel. Hope to see more from you soon!
However, I have to disagree about dithering (and agree with Stitchy): less would neither give it a cartoony feel, nor would you have to use more colours!
There are alternatives, texturing is one.
Whatever, even when dithering, you must definitely polish your shading before applying any kind of refining. I might be wrong, but the cat looks like you did both at once, which doesn't produce an efficient shading.
Edit here. Far from finished, just to make my points clear.
First I changed your colors a bit: you have two separate ramps wherein hue doesn't change (except the lightest red). I shifted hues to bring them closer.
Then I removed most dithering, changed shading on the wall and textured it, made the cat more catlike (could go much further using some refs) and 'textured' it with short vertical lines in the hope of making it look more miserable.
I also suggest you practice anti-aliasing. Some contrasted outlines are harsh without it (cat's back, light grid).
Planes of flat color mixed with the dithering might create more depth, though. ;) It doesn't necessarily have to be cartoony. I edited it a bit, mostly around the lightest areas of the cat to have more flat color and less dithering. You can just ignore me if you want, though. :>
Looks like you captured your dream perfectly. I've had a good amount of really asinine, or obscure dreams.
You're right, pan-tosser. I've changed it. Thanks!
Stitchy and Slemsvamp: Thank you for your comments. I have been pondering over the dithering issue for a while, myself, and I've come to the conclusion that less would give it too much of a cartoony feel, or I would have to use more colours... But I guess my technique just isn't good enough yet. I'll keep working! ;-)
Octokom: Thank you very much! :-)
by the thumb, I had no idea it was any good at all. great job
Dreams are weird, huh? They certainly make you think.
As far as the work, I'd say yeah, the dithering could probably be reduced and simplified. :> Harsher shadows might make the piece even more enigmatic and disturbing...
It's a lot of dithering, perhaps a bit too much. Other than that it's a good first one.
Thank you both for the support, Stitchy and Manupix. I really appreciate it!!
Damn, Manupix, you really pushed the picture to another level! The result is freaking me out (in a good way). I see I still have a lot to learn, but I guess that is the whole point and fun of doing it ;-)
Still, I am going to leave this one as it is. Once I declare a piece "finished", I hardly ever go back to it. I'd rather start fresh with a new picture and try to make use of everything I have learned from the previous one.
Thanks again!
