In this piece, I tried to combine a couple of things I like: Jungle girls, dryads, twisted trees and two lightsources. The palette is actually almost the same which I used for Sneaky Cat, just some color tweakes.

Thanks to Christoballs, Manupix and the others in the WIP threat!

16. June 2012: Changed background colors, reworked the feet and did some other minor changes.

22. June 2012: Some additionally tweaks.

An excellent piece mate, but here's something to think about:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/bhvm37r61kjedlj/contrast_test.png

You probably have a specific mind-set for the piece, but a tad more contrast might do it wonders. Either way 7/7!

Congratulations for #2 Super17. It's #1 worthy but earned a great spot nonetheless.

OMG! This piece is so fu*** amazing... and sexy. Congratulations!

Some great work on the trees. I like Dawnbringer's depth, and your current version's too. Overall very impressive and technically sound! The only thing that jumps at me is the bottom hand as a little 'off'. Super awesome job!

Wonderful work, man!

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/18/2012 05:14

I can see the appeal of the green lips but just as I thought the 'Jalonso Version' does make the eyes pop and emote more.

So many comments regarding artistic choices is a good sign that this piece has evoked the right type of public reaction which is a bonus on any piece.

Mrmo Tarius (Level 10 Master Sniper) @ 6/18/2012 02:31

I absolutely, definitely love this piece. Also green lips(tick) preferred :)

user
Grimm_Dingo (Level 1 Rookie) @ 6/17/2012 11:51

this is quite wonderful!

only real critique is she's too human-esque beautiful-elegant, if you remove the vertical lines she'd look human, would've been interesting to push the tree aspect into her anatomy moreso

*//also I like level of depth added in dawnbringers edit

TheoVision (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 6/16/2012 12:43

Blown away: deserves this month's no.1 spot!

Agree with SacreDoom though that the wood lines could be a bit more organic. Now it somehow looks like she wears a striped spandex suit. Just now-and-then changing the distance between some lines (waving) could already make some difference.

Still: damn good piece!

user
Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 6/16/2012 08:43

SacreDoom: True, but it's OK for me, she has no branches

user
Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 6/16/2012 08:38

TheInquisitor: I tried the pose too, but was OK for me, tried again and... you are probably right. Changed the feet and some other minor pixels.

user
Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 6/16/2012 08:35

skamocore: Thanks skamocore, I follwed your and a3um's advice.

a3um: Thanks! Looks like I rushed the end, really thought that I killed all unnecessary colors. Edited the background.

SacreDoom (Level 2 Dealer) @ 6/16/2012 01:19

I'm just wondering, though, why isn't there a single knot on her skin? I think that would increase the "woody" feeling.

user
Joe/Wrath Designs (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 6/15/2012 23:06

Awesome work!

user
a3um (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 6/15/2012 22:47

Nicely done indeed! Full marks from me.

Agreed with DawnBringer and skamocore. GraphicsGale's palette editor shows 2 similar colors [69,60,28] and the second one is never used, so it seems the actual color count is 14. Here is a quick color edit. As skamocore suggested I removed the brightest green from the background trunks and replaced brown with desaturated cyan. The color count is still 15:)

user
cirras (Level 1 Rookie) @ 6/15/2012 21:59

Splendid work! I think perhaps the background could be tweaked a tad as Dawnbringer suggested.

user
jeremy (Level 11 Special Agent) @ 6/15/2012 21:48

I could have sworn you'd already finished this! Great work, the pose turned out good too.

user
skamocore (Level 11 CEO) @ 6/15/2012 21:02

Perhaps you could try removing the brightest colour from the background.

user
Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 6/15/2012 18:15

DawnBringer: Oh, that looks great, but I dont' think that I can manage this with that low color count.

And thanks for your kind words guys!

user
slym (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 6/15/2012 18:08

I think that a compromise between DB's edit and your current version would be nice. I like the crammed feeling you have, but it may be a bit too much. And DB's edit makes the forest seem a bit too open in my opinion. Awesome and inspiring work =)

user
Merez (Level 6 Hitman) @ 6/15/2012 18:02

What will I may sound crazy, but it is one of the best pixel art I've ever seen. Is excellent, and listen DawnB., His version was fantastic.

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) @ 6/15/2012 17:26

Great image, but there's a lack of depth. Maybe it would be worth to tweak the background a bit.

Quick & Dirty NPA edit

TheInquisitor (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 6/15/2012 16:39

To make the point clearer, I've shaded the "front" of the leg in light blue. By the front, I mean the way the kneecap is facing. The red shade is a continuation of that same angle. However, judging by the angle you've drawn the foot, the front of the leg skews off at a point and facing the wrong direction.

I just tried to mimmick the angle you'd had her foot with my own foot and it's near impossible. It's certainly not comfortable or natural. Trust me!

I don't personally agree with offwhite's critique of the shadows though.  Considering it's outdoors and such, I think the amount of shadows you've applied is appropriate. The head might be just a tad big compared to her body. I'll let other artists decided on that though.

user
Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 6/15/2012 16:18

offwhite: I drew some shadows, don't want to get to dark there :/ And that fact that the suroundings are casting no shadows is simply an artistical choice. If this pic would be real, the leafs of the trees would cast a lot of shadows.

user
Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 6/15/2012 16:14

TheInquisitor: Thanks so much, plenty of text. Hm, I think there could be light errors on the legs, but I don't think that they are broken. Well, the feet could point a bit more up, that's right. And could you explain the leg-thing with a sketch?

user
Thug (Level 1 Rookie) @ 6/15/2012 15:49

Wow ,that's some top quality stuff ,simply great piece of work

Surely deserves being faved

user
offwhite (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 6/15/2012 15:41

Really nice concept! I love how she looks like polished and lacquered wood :D

But it bugs me that she looks a bit pasted onto the branch and not really sitting on it. You've got the factors already pointed out by TheInquisitor, but there's also the fact that she's casting almost no shadow on the branch. Nor is any of her surrondings casting any shadows on her.

That said, I still really love this piece <3

user
TheInquisitor (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 6/15/2012 15:02

Goodness me, this looks good. Now that I've composed myself, time for my second comment...

Well this is just tremendous. Frankly this blows your Sneaky Cat piece out of the water. Twice. The improvement you've shown is astonomical. Full marks from me and favourited.

Okay, now for a little critique. I've spotted some things I consider to be errors, though I cannot say I've got any further knowledge than you. Perhaps my fresh eye input will prove handy.
www.rpg-palace.com/inquisitor/DryadHelp.png

Here's what I think is wrong:

- I think her resting hand is kinked too far to the left. She's clearly relaxed in this pose, but I think her hand is twisted so far around that it'd be uncomfortable for her. I've made a little edit where it's angled more towards the viewer whilst still resting on the branch.

- I think her far foot is equally uncomfortable. If you were to rest your foot, you'd never point it downwards so severely, you'd have it pointing more or less outwards, perpendicular to the leg. Perhaps it would be tilted slightly down. I've also done a quick edit for this so that the front of the toes are angled more towards the screen. Adding shadow cast by the foot should help convey the depth.

- Now for the biggy. I'm convinced that her left foot, the other which goes underneath, is all wrong. I've had a play can come up with something completely different.

www.rpg-palace.com/inquisitor/DryadHelp2.png

www.rpg-palace.com/inquisitor/DryadHelp3.png

Basically on yours, her leg looks completely broken. As the leg comes downwards behind the other, it inexplicably changes direction. The leg is facing the right (of the canvas), but he foot is facing us, the viewer. Even without this being a relaxed pose, feet just can't move that way. I've included links to two versions - one where you just see what I've done and one with blue guides to show you how I see the leg going behind the other.

On my version, the foot I've drawn in is nearly covered in shadow from the other leg. The toes aren't visible because they are masked by the other foot. So you won't have to do anything major to pixel it in! The darkness will take care of all of the work for you.

If you make these amends, provided I am right,  I think this will be one of the best pieces on the site.
