I love this piece so much! Was it inspired by The Astounding She Monster? Someone I know has that poster up in their apartment and it always makes me think of this piece. :)
Thank you. There's a lot of errors like that in this because I couldn't find for time for refinement, really.
almost an old-school demo in itself <3
Her left forearm has an aliased white outline from her wrist to the intersection with her other forearm that looks a lot like a staircase. It's a little distracting to me, compared to the beautiful aliasing of the rest of the piece.
Lovely piece and +1 on depictions of different breast types
Thanks, thanks!
re: breasts, there's all types of women, I'm not going for an ideal figure in the normative sense here.
Aaahh maaaan this is good! It's a real shame about the 24meg version as it feels the most complete of the two.
I was thinking that the breast on the left looks s little to far apart, but maybe it's just me.
Really, really well done!
I'm always a sucker for brilliantly drawn anatomy and your art never disappoints.
Once again, a thousand thank yous. I'm really happy to see this piece get a response.
That animation is gorgeous. The effect of the image combined with the lovely music is breath taking.
it's both relaxing and stimulating... and stunningly beautiful
magical
love the ambiental sound, strings <3
does it use brainwaves?
Sadly, no, nothing on the 3d model remained, I didn't even save a render, I just posed and looked at it for a bit. I wanted the figure to be imposing, but I didn't put a lot of realistic thought into the positioning, really, I went by impression. The ribcage is indeed bent backwards in a contraction (as in the Graham dance term)
Since the ears are missing it's also hard to get a clue how the head is bend. From the impression the figure seems to me to have an actual size of 5 metres and you look up to her (considered by horizon and feet position) and the ribcage is slightly bent backwards.
You worked with the same horizon line in your artwork as the 3d model had? I mean if that would be moved up or down and the figure stays the same it'd make sense why the weighting/perspective feels so odd to me. Also did you consider a human viewpoint? Is the figure human sized, bigger or smaller? I am just curious, I am trying to find out what bugs me, for personal observational purposes.
Another bad thing with 3d models actually is that you can easily break joints, what could have happened with the shoulder. On the other hand it's damned hard to get the foreshortened forms of limbs right in a drawing, so the shoulder could be alright, and the foreshortening of the arm not clear enough.
Any references of your prelim. 3d model left?
It's been some time since I did the prelim. work for this, I do seem to remember posing a 3d model but that was mostly for lengths of limbs and relations and foreshortening (on the bent legs in particular), not muscles, as you know posed 3d models don't have working muscles. So your observations on anatomy are probably correct, and thanks.
it's a shame that you messed up the upload and the piece don't gets any exposure.
The piece itself is quite effective, if I look just at the effects, the colors and combined with the music it's definitely interesting.
Although as the initial quick glance impression was over and I looked more carefully at the figure, it lost a lot of the impression for me. The details are great, that's no question.
What throws me of is on the one hand the posing/weighting/foreshortening (her right shoulder is obviously broken or disjointed, both arms looks flat on the plane, arms look like they have a different length, not sure if the position of the feet goes along well with the horizon line - maybe broken jump joint, not sure if the the angle of the upper legs supports the weighting of the ribcage/arms if we make a projection)
On the other hand that the preservance of volumina especially for the limbs is kinda sloppy. Neither upper arms, lower arms nor uppe rlegs seem to have the same volume. At the arms it's especially bad, although I have the feeling that you redrew the right arm several times.
As a third note I am not to fond of how the flexion and tension of some muscles are drawn in, but those are merely small details.
Especially how the boob is affected by the pectoralis movement (both boobs don't look pushed in the right place) and how the obliques don't support the movement of the relation to hip and ribcage (well actually i am not sure about the weighting of the major masses, so hard to say) is throwing me off.
I dunno how the piece was created, although I assume that you invented the pose on your own while you changed the detailled version quite some times and moved away from your initial idea, and then you made the muscle details somewhat "fitting" regarding to photography-reference observation.
If you had a pose reference it'd be interesting to look at, it would be really interesting for me if my observations and some assumptions are valid.
those hands are creating some wicked negative space! the pulsing effect is also lovely.
Well, thank you. I'd have to give the museum money (hah) to Maitreya, though!
It'll probably show up in the weekly showcase in a few days, as all pieces in there were currently submitted a few days before yours. The full piece with the sound playing is something quite extraordinary. It's the kind of piece, that had it been displayed at a museem, you'd just find yourself absorbed by for half an hour without thinking any time had passed.
I kind of messed up. When I initially posted this, the smaller icon for it was over 100 klb (as it was pulsing) so it never got to the front page. Now that I've replaced the icon, I think it's too late for it to even show up as a weekly showcase pick so not a lot of people are going to run into it.
But it's okay, art has a long tail, I think.
Don't know why this isn't at the top so more people can see this.. Although I like this "Irkilla" piece, the fact that it is #1 and recieving 5x the attention and favorites is hard for me to swallow. -- I will always be more excited about an artistic piece over a game asset/mockup..although that's all I've been doing lately :-/
Amazing work, the 24mb puts me in a trance.
You might also say, only a goddess can survive this sort of beauty brought to its cold conclusion.
This dichotomy of beauty and horror.
The anorexic ideal diluted towards disturbant decay.
And yet the grace and cosmic infusion that has her brim with life.
I want to say it is an absurd beauty. or horrifying beauty. an unerotic beauty.
an inhuman beauty, a free beauty. beauty untainted by flesh or lust.
a bewitching star. alluring light. not to be loved but worshipped.
I think it is a more or less subtle navigation through the uncanny valley in a cool way.
Omigosh, this is stunning! And also somewhat terrifying. Keep up the beautiful work, Helm! ♥
(also, click here and then click on the pic?)
Thank you. I wish I could showcase that version for the gallery but, eh, what can you do.
BTW, sharp clusters on your profile picture.
very nice to see some new stuff from you. Even better to see it is such a nice piece. Very impactful.
I remember that pixeljoint has problems with larger files. Well, 24mb is something rare in pixel art.
I'm pretty glad I could help, especially someone I have and continue to learn from
Oh dang, I learned a lot real fast, king bobston. Update incoming. Thanks again.
Oh, photoshop does tweens? I didn't know this. I have to investigate more. There might be an update of this soon. Thanks, king bonston!
If I got it right what your problem is I think I have a solution but I'm really unsure.
It's a quick .gif I made. The black box represent the actuall screen, the colored-dots the different layers, which of course would be on top of each other. I created 2 frames with PS, one with the lowest dot where it should start and one with the upmost dot. I then let PS calculate however many frames I want +1. Then I delete the last frame since it should repeat. Since you would only see what would be in the black box it would look like the three dots would scroll through it with different speeds.
As said, I'm not sure if that was your problem but I hope it helps.
I like how the lady looks both human and very alien at the same time.
Dr D the problem is more that the scrolling starfield would have 3 layers of stars at different speeds on top, and I don't know how to exactly create a scrolling composite that then I could capture as a lossless GIF (the example provided above is not lossless. It's a game maker file that is captured via FRAPS and the avi is turned to a gif, this isn't a clean way to do it.) If you have a better solution in mind, I'm all ears.
And thank you for your kind words :)
I feel like this went under the radar, it is absolutely fantastic. If I had to choose one I would say I prefer the scrolling effect to the pulsing effect, it feels more impactful, though I would love to see both at once. Is it not just a matter of making sure both the scrolling bg has an amount of frames that is divisible by the amount of frames in the pulse?
Anatomy-wise, her thighs seem a bit large when compared with her skinny arms, and her left thigh seems bigger than her right, also. Altho take that with a grain of salt because my anatomy knowledge is pretty terrible.
That pulse is an amazing touch! The style reminds me of Junji Ito.
I'm not too happy with the legs which seem pretty flat, but overall I like this a lot. :)
Nope, showtime, but I love that poster now that I've seen it.
