that self promotion, Cure. tsk tsk.

I'll think of him every time I see a surreal ramble in the forum scattered with links to Air Jordan 貳拾 Prime 5 sneakers.

There were a few more factors that you guys are not aprised of which motivated this decision by your mod staff. We didn't take the decision lightly, but we think it's in this community's best interest in his specific case.

user
Goodlyay (Level 5 Detective) @ 6/29/2017 11:47

Why was RAV banned? Not allowed to have insanely long cryptic rants about pixel art while not actually having done any yourself? I thought people loved those.

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 6/29/2017 09:40

It's because they banned RAV.

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/29/2017 07:13

Yeah, that probably explains why the chatterbox is so active too

user
Fusionnist (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 6/28/2017 05:48

I'm guessing it's summer vacation that brings lots of people here

The queue is shrinking!
But wow, there are a looot of submissions every day pouring in
Where do they all come from???

Nah, just kidding:

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/26/2017 18:39

Well, I could give you one of these too, but you need to deserve it first. Try harder.

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/26/2017 17:29

Thanks, that's a wonderful gesture :)

@Hapiel: Alls I can give you is this:

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/26/2017 17:22

I've logged into PJ daily for over 10 years in hopes of internet points.....

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) @ 6/26/2017 14:08

@Hapiel: How do you know all these things? :)

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/26/2017 13:45

It used to show users in the order of their points, but this system broke at some point... Now most of us don't make it to the front page list, and the tradition of chatterbox bday wishes has mostly vanished because of it :/

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/26/2017 11:05

My birthday never shows in the list :(

user
Mandrill (Level 8 Partner) @ 6/26/2017 10:50

Were they even born in the first place?

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 6/26/2017 08:33

maybe they left because nobody remembered their birthdays

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) @ 6/25/2017 10:39

Why are you greeting people who hasn't been around since the inception of PJ?

Eggy (Level 4 Deputy) @ 6/24/2017 06:06

Nah, non-binary brushes are the least of my concerns. But I never knew it supported custom brushes! That's pretty cool

user
neota (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 6/24/2017 02:38

If you need non-binary brushes, which probably implies indexpainting, GIMP 2.9 (ie. trunk, NOT 2.8) might be your best bet.

I'm occasionally surprised that many people don't seem to realize at all that GrafX2 does animation.

user
king_bobston (Level 10 Capo) @ 6/23/2017 11:50

You can make custom brushes pretty easy for GraphicsGale, although they are limeted to binary brushes.
If you need non-binary brushes, I would have to call the pixel police! (jk )

user
Eggy (Level 4 Deputy) @ 6/22/2017 23:18

I have Pyxel Edit, and I feel very comfortable with it. Palette features are great and the brush works well to my desires (not to mention it has an excellent tileset support) but its animation feature bases itself on spritesheets instead of frame-by-frame or even the layer thing Photoshop has. GraphicsGale, on the other hand, supports frame-by-frame animation with frames being completely separate from each other and all (e.g. each one can have its own layers) and is just the way I like it, but the brush options seem very limited and the palette feature is a tad bit more difficult to work with. Basically, it seems that since PE and GG appear to cover each other and I've already paid for one of those ( Pyxel Edit was $9 while Aseprite is $15 dollars), this will be my choice of programs :)

EDIT: Reworded this quite a bit! Some time after posting I felt my post was a tad too long so I have tried to shorten it.

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/22/2017 18:33

Thank you so much Pyro and Hapiel

user
pyrometal (Level 8 Guerrilla) @ 6/22/2017 18:16

I love aseprite and I do all my pixel art in it. The docs are actually a good place to start in this case!

I would also recommend that you learn the keybindings; these will speed you up a lot once you are comfortable with them.

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/22/2017 18:03

Nope, but a lot of my questions were answered here

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/22/2017 17:16

That's awesome! I just bought it on Steam. Do you know any good tutorials for it?

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/22/2017 16:55

Yes, I'm very happy with it :). For animation I'm super used to GraphicsGale. I would draw in Grafx2 and animate in GG, but now that I know Aseprite I am okay to do both in the same software!

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/22/2017 15:43

Thanks! <3

Also, do you guys use Aseprite? Is it a good tool for animation?

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) @ 6/22/2017 05:07

@Jinn: Reload the page...?

user
DatMuffinMan (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 6/21/2017 20:44

you need to export > save for web from photoshop to reduce file size. Forgot to do it on my last piece so I missed the front page but I'm pretty sure I remember correctly

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/21/2017 19:56

Welp, it didn't. Guess it'll be lost in the limbo forever <o>

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/21/2017 18:03

@ CMW:

Nice sprites indeed. What makes them great? I'd say that the low color count & low saturation is just a style choice. You can make bad art with those specifications too.

However, his ability to choose the right details, his tricks for adding contrast in his designs and his ability to create details from single pixels, I'd say that's a good start. Specifically HIS take on all of these things. Which makes this written explanation very vague again... I guess the point of visual arts is that the picture is clearer than a 1000 words? Words can help you guide where to look, but it's greatness is in the art itself :)

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/21/2017 18:00

Not sure how the file got this big! It's just a png with alpha channel done on photoshop.

Changed it into a gif, hope it solves it.

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/21/2017 17:58

Your preview image file is 17kb. Any preview file over 10kb doesn't get to the front page...

How did you do that?
Take this one, it's 1,3 kb..

user
Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 6/21/2017 16:24

My piece just got approved yet it's not in shown in the New Pixel Art section. Does it means that there's something wrong with the Preview file or is it just a random bug?

user
CritiqueMyWork (Level 7 Captain) @ 6/21/2017 12:17

I love snes megami tensei sprites. I'd like to put into words what makes it great. Maybe, low use of colors + low saturation? https://i.imgur.com/7K7cjBu.png

user
DieMango (Level 6 Made) @ 6/19/2017 10:18

There are a few rather niche indie games like Delver that use that style...many many problems with that designspace. Delver felt like a sloth to me.

That only works in FPS like doom...but even there it is akward (see the new form where you can use the crosshair as normal)

The thing i mentioned is a weird mapping techniqoue where you have a 3D model where you pput a filter on to make it pixel-ish and then just make the image with a 2D arranged camera...a weird effect but a Game that is in devolopment named ,,Let Them Come'' has some very cool 3d rendered and then filter-pixeled. (why that? Well things look extremly fluid and have the charm of pixels...altho i am not a fan of filter stuff...takes something away from pixelart that is nesessary)

user
Taertage (Level 1 Gangster) @ 6/19/2017 10:03

Well DOOM is 2.5D, combining sprites with 3d scenes by billboarding. In the WolfenDoom mod, they actually use 3d models in addition to sprites and somehow they made it work, IMO.

user
DieMango (Level 6 Made) @ 6/19/2017 08:59

There is a wide arrange of 2D games using 3D modles with 3D filter or 3D Games randering 3D objects out...somehow we need to combine bot aspects and make a whole.

But if you diguise 2D as 3D and vise versa...then where is the appeal? That little gab shoud stay to really enjoy the bast of the 2

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 6/19/2017 08:17

I don't know if there's an easy way to merge 2d and 3d; I mean they are just by definition separate.

Though I would have preferred if the designers made more of an attempt to bridge the gap between them. For instance, in 2d animation on television they often use 3d  models in some shots, but they try to disguise them as part of the environment by drawing over them. And of course the characters would change perspective when a camera pans over them, rather than just staying flat.

So yeah, if I were working on the game, I'd do all I could to hide all conspicuous dimensionality clashes. Maybe try to redraw the characters as the perspective changes.

user
DieMango (Level 6 Made) @ 6/19/2017 07:59

I was thinking...as an future Gamedesigner i thought abou that trailer and said to myself: ,,how to make it better? And how can we use it?''

Its just 2D Sprites in a 3D Enviroment (like many Beat Em Ups did to make thing fancy due to the third axis) but with a Camera embracing 3D and havinga  plane with 3D objects.

So how can we make it better? There was the Ship scnene in the Last Night trailer wich looked very akward because thze muddy sprite and the strope-light just not fitting the scene. Or that wasted Urban area with the angled Facades wich just looked cheap.

How can we use this trick and what tricks did you have...community dude reading this...nice to hear what you think! (let me steal all your ideas :D)

People, let's talk about pixels, or in this case about a pixels-style game.

"The last night"; if you have not heard of this game yet, here's the link on youtube. Watch, and you will not be disappointed. It's only the trailer of upcoming game but it looks simply gorgeous. Blade runner meets pixels. And, OMG, it's an encounter.

I don't read the stuff here much, but as one of the oldest active mods I want to share my views:

Discussions over political and/or controversial subjects are indeed fine - as long as you guys refrain from insulting eachother.

Oh, insulting eachother is also fine but not here on PJ - cause this is an art web site and our main focus is to be welcoming to all pixel artists, old and new, good and bad, left and right, gay and straight. So:

* If you are a pixel artist, try to understand that you shouldn't cause others to avoid these boards, since they might miss more art oriented discussions because some people didn't keep it civil. Always think this before posting: "By posting this, am I allowing others to discuss as well?" If you aren't, (even if you think they should GTFO) just don't post it.

* If you aren't a pixel artist, don't plan to be one, have no business with pixels and have no intention on learning/discussing something that is the focus of this particular website; you are free to find another board to ventilate.

Important: It seems current active mods don't enjoy reading this chatterbox everyday. If you think someone shouldn't be here, please PM me and I will investigate asap.

user
Zizka (Level 10 Operative) @ 6/19/2017 03:43

I also disagree with you, I mean, to some extent.

While Ad Hominems should be moderated (in my opinion), for example:

"Leave him alone, he will continue the discussion with the nearest wall for a bit and then we're back at the normal pjbox days."

I don't think that's right.

Neither is:

"Cure is a fraud", "As if your opinion was worth anything", "If you had any sense in your brain" for that matter.

I personally think controversial topics are interesting and intellectually stimulating. In retrospect, I prefer the convo on the Last Night to the convo on the weather. I'd stick around for heated conversations about ideologies! How boring is it when everything is stale and agreements are found on every single thing. Yawn.

"Warning to all: No more talk of politics / controversial topics. Don't care which side of the argument you are on; I will ban anyone reignites the thread below."

Owch.

I won't push this further as I think you now realize that was pretty overkill. For as long as I remember the chatterbox is like this:

Step 1: Pixel art... leading to NPA argument.

Step 2: Argument going in circles, dissidents complain about said topic (usually greenraven :)).

Step 3: New mild topic pop up to tone down the heated arguments.

Step 4: Less interesting argument is dropped for a more controversial one.

Step 5: People complain argument is too controversial. Some point out that conversation should stick to pixel art. Go back to step 1.

As long as there are no personal attacks, people should be free to talk about anything they please, imho.
