I do mostly wide-pixel 8-bit computer stuff and an 8x8 font ends up with only the space of 4x8 so minus one to have space between the letters and you end up with 3x7 and so a width of 3 makes certain letters kinda tricky and I've basically had to settle into have M and W basically be the H but with the middle line raised for M and lowered for W.  Stupid letters...

Paddy (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 5/25/2017 05:22

W is a fine letter. J on the other hand, what an ugly letter. It's basically the bastard child of I and U.

Definitely not related to a font I was working on recently...

triple-u is our only hope.

t3nshi (Level 5 Soldier) @ 5/24/2017 18:09

In italian we call it "doppia vu", but most people say "www" as "voo voo voo". Some people pronunciate the letter v as "voo" and some as "vee", and it's confusing when you spell words. Thankfully we almost never have to spell any words aside from foreign terms and even then we just don't xD

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/24/2017 09:47

Tricky when making small fonts? I usually limit myself in height, never in width.. which makes E a challenge, but w can take all the horizonal space... But sure, we can get rid of the doubleyou :)

In Dutch:

waywayway punt pixeljoint punt com

cure (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/24/2017 09:46

EdJr (Level 8 Shodan) @ 5/24/2017 07:47

Be thankful you don't speak Spanish: "Uve doble uve doble uve doble punto pixeljoint punto com." Someone who actually speaks Spanish may say there's a shorter form, but that's how they always said it in some educational TV show or something.

I just call it "duh".

(Commenting something unsubstantial for lack of time; I promise I'll be releasing the next FJ version and replying to PMs soon)

Carnivac (Level 8 Shodan) @ 5/24/2017 06:43

three syllables for one letter... it's madness.  And then the internet appeared and forced us to often say three of that damn letter when spelling out a web address to people.  Also that letter is one of the trickiest ones when making small fonts.   I hate it.  Delete W.

t3nshi (Level 5 Soldier) @ 5/23/2017 18:14

I see, that's very interesting. I was thinking of using the tiles just as a map drafting method, and then working on the map as a whole, putting it into the game as a single image. But I'm still veeeery early in developement and I'm not actually sure of what I'm doing, since the programmer is barely existing at all D:

Lakelezz (Level 1 Depressed) @ 5/23/2017 15:46

Back then, there were GPUs that did not support anything but power of two sized textures (POT-textures).

Your graphics pipeline can do all crazy stuff with your textures if it is not according to what it usually uses (rule of thumb: power of two), e.g. resize them internally to make them work within their system, which costs performance.

There is no need that a texture is a square (there are some odd cases though), but both shall have a power of two size. It adds the simplicity for your pipeline to work in chunks, as well.

Any texture that isn't a power of two is being classified as NPOT-texture. It is always wise to check whether the technology or hardware you want to use/support, is capable of using them, if you go the NPOT-route.

E.g. anything lower than OpenGL 2.0 would seemingly not support them (source: https://www.khronos.org/opengl/wiki/NPOT_Texture).

About memory usage, well, usually GPUs will simply put your NPOT-texture into the next larger POT-texture-size. For example, is your texture 20x20px large, it would be stored as interpolated 32x32px large texture (which can look ugly).

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/23/2017 15:09

Might a 32x32 tile load faster/take up less memory space/whatever than a 30x30 tile in some way?

Or is it just that when there is a certain area to be covered, it is best split into x^2^2 size tiles?

Goodlyay (Level 5 Detective) @ 5/23/2017 14:57

Technically tiles that are that power of 2 size can still allow for some optimizations when programming a game.

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/23/2017 14:19

That would rhyme, except that someone decided to call the "w" a "double u" which makes little sense. Why not just call it "we"?

ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 5/23/2017 09:59

'i' before 'e' except after 'w'

surt (Level 11 Godfather) @ 5/23/2017 02:17

Only to avoid ridicule for being a wierdo.

t3nshi (Level 5 Soldier) @ 5/23/2017 01:17

Sup people, I have a question for you: is there a reason to prefer a traditional tile size (like 16x16 or 32x32) over a custom one (es.:20x20) when designing a tile set?

Aside from wanting to follow traditional limitation, I mean.

pyrometal- I won't anymore, just joking ^-^.
(I'll wait for you to go offline )
@Eggy- Let's say everyone only votes itself, and when it does it votes 5/5, then all the pieces will end up being in the same spot. It means that not voting for yourself is like being one step behing :p.

philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 5/20/2017 19:00

@Eggy-Same man. (Worked on chrome this time, but it wasn't working when I tried last week-I was trying to put previews on my profile).

It's also perfect motivation for leveling up. Every other level you get a rating upgrade, so you get to rerate all your works even higher! Why else do you think I have all these PJ points?

king_bobston (Level 10 Capo) @ 5/20/2017 07:45

I keep a list of peeps that rate their own stuff so I won't rate theirs to restore justice ;^)

Eggy (Level 4 Deputy) @ 5/20/2017 07:40

Ah, okay then, thanks! It's just that I actually believed rating your own work is bad sport because I thought it could come off as pretentious and unfair especially when you rate it high and it's not that good  But I guess rating oneself to show what you'd rate your own work if you were a passerby rather than to make it look better than it actually might be makes sense.

Mandrill (Level 8 Partner) @ 5/20/2017 07:08

I'm totally with Hapiel on this! Be proud of your work and rate it as high as you can. ;)

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/20/2017 04:11

Bad sport? Gotta believe in your own works! I rated all mine to the max, obviously

Eggy (Level 4 Deputy) @ 5/20/2017 02:45

Also, I just finally figured out how to put images besides PJ's smileys on Google Chrome; I have to right-click on my desired image, click "Copy Image", click on PJ's comment box and hit Ctrl+V. Like this one from the HoF:

Cartoon Ape icon/pixelart

And until now I had no clue how to do that and I thought I had to use FF or something to do it, which was a little too much trouble to do just to post an image. Yay for me

By the way phillip, which browser do you use? If you use Google Chrome, did you try the method I described above?

Eggy (Level 4 Deputy) @ 5/20/2017 02:02

Hey guys, is there a way to remove a rating or something? Because when I was browsing PJ on my phone earlier today, I accidentally tapped on the rating bar and ended up rating one of my own pieces by mistake (assuming that rating one's own piece is bad sport or whatever).

Also, could someone remind me whether translucent pixels are allowed on pieces submitted to PJ? As in pixels that aren't completely opaque or transparent (like a #FF0000 pixel with 127 transparency as opposed to 255 or 0).

ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 5/18/2017 17:36

maybe switch browsers and try again. If you're talking about posting an image in the comment section, you can't copy and paste an image if you use some browsers.

philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 5/17/2017 22:36

I think im banned from posting pictures on pj D: no longer works for me. I think it was because I would spam the chat years ago q-q.

pyrometal (Level 8 Guerrilla) @ 5/17/2017 16:50

PJ's comments, articles and private messages all use the same formatting system

MrHai (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 5/17/2017 16:22

What the...! What is this magic? :O

pyrometal (Level 8 Guerrilla) @ 5/17/2017 14:51

Yes, that is also an option

The advantage of modifying the page source directly is that it gives a live preview right on the page with PJ's CSS already applied to it.

I guess it comes down to personal preference though!

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/17/2017 14:10

Can't you format the post in an external editor, and then copy-paste it in PJ's wysiwyg editor?

pyrometal (Level 8 Guerrilla) @ 5/16/2017 20:23

Thanks everyone

If you think this is cool, wait until next month! After some more preliminary testing today, I think you will be quite pleased with the extent to which articles can formatted

Thinking maybe I should post a tutorial in the forums that explains how to do this so others can enhance their articles. Requires knowledge of HTML/CSS + using your browser's "web developer mode" though...

Zizka (Level 10 Operative) @ 5/16/2017 18:29

Really liking the preview monthly!

greenraven (Level 1 Gangster) @ 5/16/2017 10:05

Very. It's like those classic 1920's radio performances, there's sound effects and everything.

Best part is that I got it from a Humble Bundle so all 20 something books only cost me $15! \o/

Mandrill (Level 8 Partner) @ 5/16/2017 09:54

This was all Pyro's work. Fantastic indeed.

MrHai (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 5/16/2017 09:09

Thats just pyro working his magic. Agreed - it's fantastic.

Paddy (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 5/16/2017 08:50

FixelJoint has previews on the top monthly now

or is that just how whoever posted it formatted the post, either way it's a great addition.

Mandrill (Level 8 Partner) @ 5/16/2017 07:54

40k you say? Count me in.

Is the book good?

greenraven (Level 1 Gangster) @ 5/15/2017 21:30

Hey so anyone want to change the subject to something that isn't a decade stale moldy cheese?

You know how some people see jesus on toast? Close enough.

In other news I just finished listening to the second Garro audiobook, Legion Of One. Any Warhammer 40k fans in da house?

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/15/2017 15:33

You could choose to have the categorisation done by the one who submits. In that case you can either have a lot of arguments, or decide to respect the definition of the submitter and have everything gray.
I'd be okay with the latter.

Or, instead you have some pixel police go through every sumission and categorise them, which is what we do now already anyway. That means the category is just as gray as it is now, but with the added benefit that other artworks still do show up in the gallery!

Solutions all around?
