The 2006 Mini Game Compo for 8bit machines has started here.  Judging from last year, most (if not all) graphics will be pixelled by hand, none of this pre-rendered crap.

Looks like you can now physically pixel (and voxel) with PixelBlocks. They have a pretty decent range of colours, and as they are semi-transparent, obviously colour depth can be increased at certain angles.
