Nom Cat is a popular mobile game released on iOS and Android. It's a very addiciting and fun arcade game where you have to eat fish and avoid eating the bombs, you should definitly try it out. Currently has 3 milion downloads!

I dont think it looks odd. It's backlighting which creates a nice touch, accentuates the shape and sets it more apart from the background. It's just something else than the usual.

I use photoshop to animate and pixel all my stuff. 
I just keep tweaking the animation untill it's smooth and looks good :)
