This is my first attempt at a pixel art animation. It is zoomed at 200% (i like the look better). Any and all advice is appreciated. I will be updating here with my progress.

You made him move to fast for one thing. (It look like he well die in 5 min :P) And hes moving looks unreal.

You can post stuff here at 1x - in the forum you can simply click on the image and it'll zoom in.
anyway, my first bit of advice is to center that helmet on him- his face seems pressed right up against the glass, with a huge empty area behind him. Looks pretty funky. I'd also slow down the animation a bit, unless he's supposed to be breathing really hard. Another thing you could do would be to change the intermediate frames mouths - make the left pixel on the mouth the pinkish cheek color. not sure if it would work, but if it does it'll look more like he's opening and closing his mouth and not just close-close-open-close. Dont' really understand the hair coming down on the face either, since none of the rest of the head is moving. actually, now that I think about it, it looks like they're blowing the hair out of their face. For a first attempt though it's pretty nice (better than mine was! ) Keep at it! |

Okay. I agree about the helmet it looks messed up. Here is my try at a different more space-like helmet. I tried to make his face more blueish cause I figured the glass on the helmet would affect the colors of his face.
It still looks weird tho a little to me. I also agree about the fast animation. I want to slow it down maybe put some frames inbetween to make it smoother. And not look like hes about to die =P |

quite an improvement over the first version, but there still is a lot more room for improvement, first off i think u could get rid of some colors, i think 5 would be nuff... also it looks jaggy here and there, some cleaning could be done to also help readability....
for the animation, i think the arms shouldnt move up and down also he should inhale (not exhale) when chest is moving up heres a little edit ![]() Edited by onek - 04 May 2010 at 6:35pm |

I really like what you did there. Unfortunately I am not nearly good enough to do something like that.
However I do agree about the colors. Your colors look better. They blend more and look more muted or something. Here is the palette I'm using. I want to keep the colors for the game consistent.
I really like your edit. I want to keep with the simplicity though. Although it would be cool to add a bunch of neat space gear to his suit.. it might also make it hard to animate him. Here i have changed the helmet once again to be more realistic. No more cartoon face.
I also made a first pass at a running animation. I think its too jerky. I need to smooth it out still. Shouldn't the helmet be moving somehow? I copied the cycle out of a book.
Anyways heres an early mockup. The tiles could be better.
