The contrast needs to be increased.
The six upper colors in your pallette look the same at first.
If you make the grey more greyer and darker, the shadows can be seen.
If you want to keep it this way, it's best to give it one color to keep the color count as low as possible.
For your first piece, I think this is pretty good. But, as I've said, the contrast needs to be increased.
