So, I've recently gotten into pixel art (working mostly at low resolutions, I intend to upload some of the stuff within a few days) and MS paint seems intent on auto adjusting colors from one shade to another, it's usually relatively minor, but nonetheless it's something I'd like to get fixed if possible.
Another odd thing is that this only seems to happen in some pictures. I've managed to get 12 shades between white and black in one picture, and in another I can barely get four.
Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about because I can't think of a way to show it in screenshots. Maybe I'm just imagining it, who knows.
At any rate, thanks in advance.

Paint sucks on saving GIF files. JPEG is a no-go for pixel art, at all, so forget about it.
Only save your Paint pixel art as PNG.

I've been saving my files as .PNG, this happens while I'm working on individual pieces. Is there any other possible explanation?
If it helps, it seems to occur more often in pictures with a wide variety of colors/shades and the like.

Well, it's MSPaint and it can tend to be buggy sometimes due to perhaps its age and simplicity. If possible, you could try to download another simple program that can save image files, and copy and paste what you have from MSPaint to that program.
You could try http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/ - Graphics Gale , http://www.gimp.org/ - GIMP , http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/downloads.html - Paint.net , http://www.pixlr.com/editor/ - or this online version thing of Photoshop (free) .
Of course, if you do not want to download any new programs, that complicates the problem.

I always save as bmp in paint then convert to gif with another program. Can't say I've ever noticed a problem with it changing the colors, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened I guess.

It does happen, even when converting. Sometimes.
I use http://www.brothersoft.com/giffy-16084.html - giffy to convert bitmaps to gifs.

Sorry this took so long, but wow, that browser based version of photoshop is exactly what I was looking for, but wasn't finding until now. Thanks much to all of you, definatly gonna be using that from now on.
