Hi guys,
I just wanted to make a post about a pixel pushing tool i developed. I wasn't really satisfied with any of the pixel drawing apps for the iphone, so i made my own.
The result is http://itunes.apple.com/hk/app/love-app/id401800662?mt=8 - Pixation . It is free.
Hopefully some of you will find it useful.
I did http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/59510.htm - put it through a test myself and i was able to work more easily on it than any of the other apps, so i *think* i succeeded however mostly im posting so i can get comments/suggestions on it.
EDIT: changed the name of the app

What programming language did you code this in?
If you had to learn anything while making this, could you direct me to the resources you used?

Its c++ running openGL.
It has an interface of Objective-C so that it could integrate with the iOS stuff.
It uses several other libraries: the gif saving/loading is CxImage, theres a little bit of PHP source code, and tinyXML.
a Big update is coming very soon - in it the app will be renamed Pixation.

I'd like to know if there's even a remote chance of you porting this for Android platform :P :)

Awww, It's not on the horizon really, but it does have a PC version that could be released with a bit of polish... not sure if there would be much interest in that.
Would you be interested in a PC release?

Lack of good pixel apps for Android tablets are why I didn't shell out for a "cheap" $99 tablet ye.

I've got myself a spanking new android smartphone, and I'm appalled at the lack of a decent pixelart-making app for it :/

I recently purchased your app, and found it to be great in features, though not intuitive enough. some actions like panning around are a bit clumsy and sometimes isn't very accurate. Another pixel pushing app I found after a good search is tiny pixels. While it isn't quite is feature heavy as your app, it is super intuitive; panning done with 2 finger sliding for example. I can pixel lightning fast using tiny pixels. If your app had a slight boost in user interface and intuitiveness, it'd be, without a doubt the best pixel editing software in the AppStore

I still think, that is obviously misleading, why the threadstarter deleted the link to my pixeleditor HiScore, that I had to start a new thread http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12046 - http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12046 . Please change the subject to "Pixation for iPhone", or also allow other users to post links to pixeleditors for iphone, when the subject is "Pixel Editor for iPhone" Thanks!!

and sure, :: title changed ::
@Frost Butt
Thanks for your purchase! I really appreciate your feedback as well.
Can you be more specific about other things that you think should be improved?
As far as the panning, I take the direct input that the OS is giving me and offset the canvas by that much.... or is that not what you are seeing? maybe you are seeing a bug? What type of device do you have?

Youre welcome metaldev, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. The only real complaints I have with pixation plus is panning and zooming. I just think it's highly unintuitive to have to hold down one of the hand buttons in the corner, wait a bit, and then use two fingers to zoom in. Why not just get rid of the hand controls? If you have ever used the iphone app "tinypixels" you would know what I mean. You pan simply by placing two fingers on the screen and move around to pan, and just pinch to zoom. I would love to see your app reproduce tinypixel's pan and zoom controls.

Hey Frost Butt, thanks for your feedback!
In fact, I wrote pixation BECAUSE i used tiny pixels and really disliked the way it worked! :P
here is my thinking in the design of the hand in Pixation:
for me, the hand is a central feature of the usability of Pixation because I wanted a division between navigation and drawing.
I would always accidentally be drawing errant pixels in tinypixels (and also edge touch which also felt clonky to me).
So the hand is designed as a modifier just like in Photoshop you use the space bar. I wanted it to have the same feel as when im pixelling in PS.
You'll notice that i put the dropper right next to it too, so it can be used like the brush sampler in PS that is normally used with ALT.
Both are designed to be easily accessed wtih the thumb of the hand holding the device.
Having said that, I can definitely see what you are saying - so I suppose we'll just disagree on this one. and again, a big thanks for telling me your thoughts its very important for me and if you have more thoughts i want to hear them.
this one is actually a feature, not a bug!

Okay that's cool! However, my real main concern is that it doesn't always work right. I'll hit the hand button, and try to pinch, but nothing happens. Then I hit the hand button again, wait 5 seconds and sometimes itll then zoom, sometimes it won't. Im using an iPhone 4 with the next to most up to date firmware. I'll pay 2 more bucks to get tiny pixel control options though haha : D

this is very strange.
... i haven't seen that happen.
When you touch the hand it should swap modes instantly and also the zooming it should be nearly instant - especially on the newer phones like yours.
is it possible that something is running in the background? like perhaps something multitasking or something that would otherwise be taking processor cycles?

it definitely is pretty buggy when swapping modes. You say it should immediately swap so I only have to *tap* the hand, then I'll be able to pan and zoom? to be able to pan, I have to hold the hand down, and then the pan works right; not buggy; BUT then while I'm holding the hand down, it wont line me zoom, it just automatically draws a line, according to how I place my two fingers

ha! ok theres no bug.
This is how you use it:
you have to HOLD the hand (or the SAMPLER) to make them work.
the hand is not a toggle - its a modifier.
so you hold it while you want to navigate, as soon as you release it you are back in drawing mode.
hopefully i didn't misunderstand you.

ok, but still, sometimes it lets me zoom and sometimes not when I do hold the hand. I really wish you'd just let us zoom without the hand. It never works right for me. Then once on a blue moon it'll decide to start zooming

so if you were to design it,
you would zoom with 2 fingers and have the line drawing be a separate tool correct?
if so how would you pan? the hand still?

no, I'd keep the controls of tiny pixels if I could design it. You pan by placing two fingers on the screen and then panning. What I love about your app are the features. Animation, palette keeper, awesome interface (aside the my functionality gripes)
No extra clicking needed for drawing, panning, or zooming. If you've ever used the colorsplash app for iphone, that's another great example of the control scheme I prefer.
I'm really not trying to rag on your app, if that's what it seems like. It's just zooming and panning is such a crucial thing when doing pixel art, and I don't know if I'm the only one experiencing the response issues.. For now I'll continue using less feature rich tiny pixels, but I'll continue to support your app, especially if it improves

no, don't worry about that :)
like i said, I really appreciate you taking your time to share your thoughts about the app. It's actually hard to get this type of feedback. In fact, you are the first to complain about these things, but that doesn't mean you are the only one who feels this way.
when I give the app another pass, I'll see how i can maybe fit in an option or something that toggles how it works into how you are suggesting.
The key for me would be to add such a feature that could radically change the way the app works in an intuitive way. For example, im sure a lot of people would still want it to keep working the way i have it now as well, so I have to think it through how it could be added.

Does anyone know if sedgemonkey would be willing to open an API to allow Mobile apps to upload pixel images to our accounts? That would be kinda sweet to see a PixelJoint Upload option in an App... Just a thought... Sweet App, Pixation, man... I'll be checking it out today. Edges Touch is another one I just found but haven't downloaded today. Love seeing Pixel Apps on the iPhone!

@randomblink, PM Sedge and discuss it and if you can help him set it up then it should be cool.
