Hello people, Got miself a tree.

Not sure about leaves yet, I'm thinking for a larger tree that the clusters would be spread out vertically, and less like a giant broccoli.
I Plan on painting the leaves, but I'm not sure that I like the shape right now.

The trunk is however much more finished.

And the cast shadow is subject to change with the shape of the leaf clusters/ Branches. I Plan on setting up a quick 3D model to render a proper cast shadow for reference when its finished.

I'm thinking its a little too saturated also...

And I'm really not sure about the Rim Lighting. I Suppose I'll have to wait until the leaves are finished to get the full RimLight effect, and I'd probably have to make the shadow a bit darker so it doesn't seem out of place.

First copy:                                                                                                                            Final Copy:

Thanks again!

Note: I have started rendering leaves onto the current shapes I have defined for the leaves, I'm starting to like it :P

That's a great improvement! Maybe ther should be some kind of branch visible too? I'm aware the perspective is from above, but ot kind of looks like a round ball smacked on top of it. Also for such an old tree, the crown looks a bit too round and perfect (and a tad bit small?).
Really good job on the trunk though! : )

Yeah, i totally agree. Id like toget a shape im happy withbfore i syart rendering all the leaves. Will probably make it a bit taller keep in mind though the actual size of this sprite is going to be bigger than other trees hehe

Update

I'm thinking something like this? (will render texture on branches better, this was quick)

I'm liking the new shape of the crown! Think I'm about ready to start leaving(?) haha

The grass BG is pretty but does not read as grass.

I apreciate your comment, but I'm trying to refine my tree atm :P

Here is a quick mock of some grass tiles I already have. Theres a few animated flowers that I didnt put on there too. I don't wan't to get too off topic on this thread tho

My comment was really directed at the tree and not the grass. With this much detail and pixelling plus the amount of pixelling already in the trunk it would seem the treetop  will need just as much and I just don't see that happening well without getting into the 'pixel pudding' territory.
The trunk being detailed and the treetop pixelled just enough to suggest and read then the grass is OTT. I realize you are working on assets one at a time but you should maintain a mental view of the whole. If this is a game project more reason to scale back a bit overall so that game sprites and gameplay are easy on the player. But even if its just a scene sometimes too much pixelling takes away.

Hmmm Ok, I see what you mean. I thought It looked great, but even if one person has a doubt then I'm not satisfied

I had thought about adding plain green tiles bordering the grass tiles I have now to break up the detail a little bit. If you had seen the first or second attempt at my grass, you would see just how much improvement was made haha... infact, I still have them:

Here is the first one:

The second one was basicly 4 shaded noise...

... Even still though, I do kind of see what you mean. That is why I had the background there anyway, to see how it would look on my grass (note the grass is quite desaturated compared to the tree also) :)

This tree is also not going to be duplicated very much in the game, as it is a verrrry large sprite! I will make smaller/younger trees to compliment this giant.

Thank you!

Edit: I ASSUME by pixel pudding you mean too much detail without a clear focus?

Does it have to be grass?

Grass or dirt/soil, What else would a tree grow on? The tree is not so abstract that you would expect it to be able to grow out of a pool of slime, or erupting from the side of a crystal mountain.

There will be areas in the game that are more make-believe, but this is for the HUB town, which is fairly normal. Stone/wooden fences, grass/dirt pathways, trees/flowers, small village houses, a marketplace.. A simple semi out-of-the-way Village.

The first level is underground, and is lit by absorbing energy from glowing crystals. mostly will be wet/slimey rocks, perhaps a few long roots .. not much vegitation in general though. and i'm only working towards and Alpha version right now, so I will only have the HUB and the first level completed for now.

Allot of it is all still subject to change, and as much as I really appreciate your comments, I feel as if your saying "It's wrong, fix it?" and not actually offering an alternative. It's kind of confusing for somebody new to pixelart and 2D game development.

At the same time however, I don't wan't to be the guy that settles for asthetic quality based on other games. I find it all to often that People don't strive enough because "It's OK". I'm not trying to be innovative or come up with anything that will change the gaming industry, I simply wan't to create a rich , engaging environment to compliment the story/gameplay mechanics I have written :)

Don't mean to come of as rude, forgive me if that may be the case, just trying to wrap my newb head around this

I meant the texture is quite neat and looked like a cover of small plants, which is perfectly possible. Varietas delectat. But if traditional/basic grass is what you want...then it might be a little "exotic"

Hmmm, Perhaps a little :P I do however like the mood of the grass. If its possible for grass alone to emit a mood

I think for now I will leaf it as it is and finish up the tree. I'l work on my other assets to finish up my Village, and once I have enough to create a full environment I will line up assets and see if anything seems out of place.

Really appreciate it guys, with every word I absorb knowledge!

Edit: I will almost certainly create more tiles to border this grass with a shorter, less dense grass tile :)

So Here it is! Tree V2.0!

Im 95% content with this asset hehe. Theres a few clusters of leaves that don't seem to belong, but besides that, I don't think its too shabby.

I could in theory work on this one tree forever and ever and ever until I have something so amazing that I could print it and frame it. However, it IS after all just ONE asset in my game haha XD

I feel at this point my time and sanity is much better invested into creating other assets. Regardless though, I have learned allot, and thank all of you for helping me on this sub-project!

Cheers!

If you ever work on this tree again, I suggest you put more shade on the trunk. It just feel a bit too bright in my opinion.

I agree with Numberplay, looks awesome though, I love the details on the trunk.
