hey all, i'm new here.
but i'd like to share my indeed crappy talent of pixel-art.

ok this is my idea.. a basic "super mario bro's" view on the side (based on my mate marko)

i got a strange angle but it kind of works.

feel free to give me some helpful comments. i'm currently making more small additional "items" for to be placed around the picture

please post yuour comments.
thankss

That's prety good, the PRESS START and AUDIO WORLD things could use some cleaning up.

[the angle you are you are using by the way is called 'oblique']

thanks for that.

yeh it's poor quality because photobucket lowered the quality becausei t was too big. it looks normal with the bmp pic.

step one: never ever ever save pixel art as a .JPG. EVER.

it looks a little bland, could use some major detail with texture. just kidn alooks like some very old low quality PC game riht now, and I say low quality because the color count is fairly high and there is absolutely no shading. Also the back street looks odd because it has no white lines; and the front street looks odd because there are white lines, but teh spcing between them and the sidewalk is very odd, since it's very close to one sidewalk; and the other is nowhere to be found, with no other street lines.

yes. I can be harsh :( but it's out of lub.

Shade, shade, shade.
Also, try to go more dynamic in the minor details.

Also, save your images as PNGs.
That way when you upload them to photobucket nothing happens.

thanks for the comments everyone.
i'm no pro at shading (well i dont know how to do it ahah)

but yeh i dont know i had my file as a BMP and i uploaded on Photobucket.. and it came out like that.. it was probably too big.

yeh i agree the road looks a little plain and weird but i havent really touched it. just been working on the little items and features.

Just pick a place to have a sun, or a lightsource of some kind.
Then try shading behind each object to where the lightsource is.

Then figure out if any peices stick out in the picture, then begin sading behind it, since it would slightly block the lightsource.

I like it! kinda reminds me of old spectrum games like paperboy... and other cheap titles!

don't listen to the JPG nazis here, although PNG is better for quality, only the most anal will care

Then ALL pixel artists are anal? That's a new one. Besides, you save your work in png.

JPG is not good for pixel art because it causes MAYOR color loss, and the point of pixel art is to have each pixel exactly placed. Save it as gif or png. You won't have the photobucket trouble either.

I love this simplistic style and would'nt dither/shade or AA it. Some details like the copy should be fixed, good job. Its not jpg nazis, its called proper pixelart technique.

here is an update.. still no time for shading.. but i added more things to make it a little more .. interesting

and yes i am aware that thigns are bigger than the people.. but i guess i couldnt have drawn the computer any smaller if i wanted it to look like an actual P160WF case.

Posted By: Souly
Date Posted: 08 April 2006 at 11:29pm
The money looks as if it's just floating there...
Umm.. I'm pretty sure you could have done it smaller.
Why would it have to look EXACTLY like a 9160WF case?
Also, the colors are very saturated.

Try getting some better colors.

okay, the proportions still arent perfect, but looking at the guy's head it wont matter thát much

did use a lot of colours though =( .. well by my standards anyways =P

@ souly - i think it needs to be this specific computer because it's like.. a prize in the game. but yeah. i think it could've just been any case. that thermaltake(right?) case from the 1st post is a lot more recognizeable too, or a chieftec one.

this case is pretty.. normal

cheers for that. the thing about me is when i draw .. i outline everything in black .. and i leave it there.. i'm not really used to using lighter colours as an outline..  i dont really mind if the proportions right or not. afterall a door is twice the height of a person XD..

it has to look exactly like one because peopel can see it's a p160.. it's a pretty popular case because it looks stylish and so on.. the money is floating because i havent done any shading/shadowing on it yet. explain more on what you meant by "try getting some better colours"

Really. think of your dialup users :(. As for the case being popular: i've never heard of it. You defenitely need some work on the shading; especially in the alleyway, you can hardly tell it's supposed to be in the background. it looks more like it's all on the same plane.

''and you said never save as JPEG... believe it or not .. the update pic is a jpeg ^^.''

i noticed that when i cleared the background from the char and case and it didnt work with bucket tool.

i too have never heard of that case. and i don't think its stylish either. it's pretty ugly really, no covering of the drives and such.
but this isnt a case discussion, it's an art critique.

- outlining everypart of things in black is bad, it separates all the individual things and makes the whole feel busy and crowded. only putting lines on the outmost edges of the sprite is better.
- ''i dont really mind if the proportions right or not. afterall a door is twice the height of a person XD..''    i DONT like ducks
- the money doesnt float because the lack of shading, it floats because of the warped perspectives you are using (side on the sprites, iso on th rest) i think
-the colours are icky because they are very oversaturated. try making them all a lot grayer (setting it on about 140/240 would do the trick i think)

and why are you allready designing a small section of one level to high detail, instead of working on the layout, tiles, sprites etc and then combining them?

I have 2 things to say.

  • 1.Add shading.
  • 2.save as png(it's to blurry).

Revive the bannana thread,

You really should shade. The colors are so saturated I can't tell what's going on/what I should be looking at and that's not really good for a game.

many hours=about 30 min , the major part u should have wasted on brainstorming ideas

review the entire concept , if u don't have patience for that forget about it.

It's not a waste. Everytime you draw something it's practice. So what if it's not an instant masterpeice? That's the only way you can get better is through practice. I'd agree with starting over. Practice isn't a waste of time.

So you spent 10 minutes drawing that? I'd suggest you spend more time on pixel art.

no. he did his school assignments in 10, and used the leftover 40 for pixels.
