It's about a small boy that enters paintings of well known artists: Picasso, Dali, Munch, Van Gogh... Your work reminds me this great book!

Never heard of this. I will have to check them out, thx.

Hey Jal, quick inquirysuggestioncritthing

So I def don't know as much about colors as you do, and maybe you choose to do this on purpose / it's your style

but why not add a few more colors to your ramps? i think you could make some things look a lot smoother and rounder

I did a quick edit of this piece of paper / hat thing:

added 2 colors (and adjusted to even them all out), and got rid of some of the dithering. I think it looks more painty, but maybe the style's too clean or whatever for you, just a thought.

ps: What did you mean by "Picasso is coming to an end", that you're choosing to work on it no longer or you've finished all the art? Is is still being programmed? That was a really awesome project, something that deserves to be seen by a wider audience =]

If I would allow myself to do this I'd be done by now. I'm trying to remove colors with every update.
I don't have to but I enjoy removing colors and having to rework stuff to make things work. I learn from it.

Do you mean the Medici project instead? if so, its still slowly going on. Picasso mockup mess is in my gallery.

Maybe the Asylum screen is getting too busy with the added old man on the chair painting. Unsure what to do with the door. Strong floor reflections or just wood floor :/

I'm unsure about the old man on the chair, kinda looks like a child because of the big head. But you're right, I would put him somewhere else.
About the floor: I would go for the first, because it fits the most to this kind of "room" in my opinion.

Looking over things with a critical eye I see little action so I'll make 2 more screens. I'm thinking a train station might work for action and to further add more of an Edwardian era mood.
I see little overall green so these screens will be greenish. I'll also be able to add a male portrait and work the old man in the chair somewhere along with any other painting I might have missed that are important. suggestions welcome.

...on the flip side I wonder if I have too many screens and have killed the whole thing :/

... is the red ramp wrong? too saturated? too orange? The reds seem right to me in the cafe screen but not so good elsewhere...halp!

The darkest reds might be too saturated. In the title screen the dark brown buzzes a bit with the dark red, I think it contrast a bit much with the black. You could possibly darken that brown to fix both those things+get a new buffer. Vincent's Sketchbook is really the only place I don't like the red, the dither doesn't serve any purpose.

The sailor doesn't really jive with the rest, beard especially - bubbliness is kinda the antithesis to Van Gogh.

and then looking at the reference I thought you might be able to apply that kind of background to the Sketchbook page:

The Mill is seriously picturesque, and I love the girl portrait (those cheeks <3)

I don't think greenish screens would be necessary, but more screens would be cool.  Can't help you on the reds.  It all looks good there.  The only thing that bothers be is the white outline on some of the characters and objects.  I'm assuming they would be the character/item in focus?  If so, how about an indicator on the top or bottom instead?  Or make it more pronounced somehow.  I never understood white outlines anyway.
Everything looks really good though.  I've been watching this thread for a while.

Yes, I noticed this too. I'm going to try the train screens and see what reds I need there then at the end I'll correct the red and that darkest brown. This all happened when I tried to force a purple that I removed a while back... I fail at colors :'(

Oh noes, this is really tough to read. The BG on the sketchbook and the puzzles is my attempt at a 'dreamy FX' since the game action is within a dream...I like your BG suggestion but I really want to keep the same BG on those screens for unity's sake. Maybe its the reds :/

I'm so glad The Mill looks good since the sky color transition sometimes looks odd.

Sailor (train conductor) is just an early WIP but I agree the beard is a mess. The painting looks like circles to me but I agree the more stroke-y effect is best.

nice job, this is really coming together!  Should it be (c) 2012 JAL PLAY if you release in 2012 or is it when you started the project?  Also, any chance of using this ref: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Van_Gogh_-_Skull_with_a_burning_cigarette.jpg Could make for a good end boss.

I am always confused on the legal side of this but I always use when I start since its always legally possible that an idea/concept can be stolen before its completed. The art is all not mine as I'm sure someone owns rights to VanGogh  so I don't claim the copyright for the art just the concept. Also, its just for a mockup purpose and not intended to be a real commercial thing.

This is why I never mind posting and posting with little replies, c+c or feedback *cough-cough*...someone always comes thru for me with just the kick I need. thx :)

Started with a cemetery screen where I was going to try to collage in whatever scenery I could since the several cemetery drawing by VanGogh are not very game friendly...then I found VanGogh and his brother's real burial site and wondered if using them is the better way to go?

First off, I think the lighting is off in both pics.  Why would the skull and the top of the characters hat be so bright in comparison to the seen?  I suggest either adding more highlight to the skeleton body or cover the skull with the surrounding mist.  I prefer the pic on the left, mainly because the clouds look so good.  I do think the ground could use a some work though.  Just follow the same technique you used on the other pics.

Just wondering about general screen layout, composition and using the real graves as refs. Not yet ready for lighting or detail work at all.
In games the player sprite lightsource hardly ever changes so these assets sometimes match the environment and sometimes not. I will eventually try to make it read seamless but I never mind a little light change between sprites and tiles. Its a compromise often made and always keeps the programmer in a good mood ;)

In that case, I would have to say the one on the left matches the style of the other images more.  The one on the right's perspective is too correct for Van Gogh, although I'm sure you could make it work.  Composition is fine in both pics.  Also, I just noticed the starry night building in the corner, nice touch.

These are all very beautiful; I really love the game idea -- it doesn't seem that fleshed out at the moment, but definitely has a lot of potential.

It's a bit of shame this is in the realms of mockup. What do you think you'd need to move this into a real game (funding, programmer, other artists)? I wonder if you couldn't get funding through some sort of art grant if you angled it more along the dimensions of art education/history.
